The message from the Kenora MP Greg Rickford, as
he reacts to news Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau
has admitted to smoking marijuana since being
elected to Parliament.
Rickford says Trudeau has already voiced his
thoughts on pot use.
He says there are challenges in Northwestern
Ontario regarding the use of narcotics, and that
Trudeau isn't setting a good example.

"The criminalization of marijuana creates ties to other
crime, just as prohibition did with alcohol. This creates an
enormous cost for the justice system, the penal system and
for society as a whole when we criminalize tens of thousands
of our young people. This idea deserves serious study. In the
interim, decriminalization is the least we can do toward
reducing the harm inflicted by our current legislation."

Lac-Saint-Louis (Quebec)
Liberal MP Francis Scarpaleggia (Lac-Saint-Louis, Que.) downplayed the significance
of the resolution to support the legalization of marijuana to his partys identity, and
shifted attention to the measures that will give power over policy and leadership
back to members and supporters.
Thats not the defining resolution, Mr. Scarpaleggia said of the marijuana
resolution. Where the party was defining itself was more on constitutional
amendments. This is where we changed ourselveswith they amendments to the
constitution.

Although Mr. Scarpaleggia insisted that the measures will bring significant changes
to how the party operates, he conceded that the hard work for the Liberals is only
beginning. I dont think that that in itself will ensure victory in the next election
its only one piece of the puzzle.

"The position is that we support decriminalization of possession,
especially in terms of a priority of decriminalize of youth possession,
because in general criminalization is not the way to go. In terms of
youth behavior, at the same time it's the case that some kind of a
study is needed. It's been 40 years since the really good LeDane
