10.0 INSTALLATION OF PIPE SUPPORTS
10.1 Scope
This section together with the drawings, details and specifications referenced herein
covers the requirements for the installation of office engineered, shop fabricated pipe
supports.
10.2 Office Engineered Pipe Supports
10.2.1 Pipe supports and pipe support assemblies, for all piping are office engineered.
Trunnions, welded shoes, and pipe lugs are shop installed. Standard Pipe Support
Details are listed in APPENDIX I.
10.2.2 General Requirements
a. Mark numbers
1. Pipe supports for field installation are shop assembled to the
maximum extent practical, and identified by mark numbers either by
direct marking or by using metal tags. An example of a typical
support mark number identification is shown below.
Support Standard Number
Item
Pipe size, NPS
Mark Number: G2 - A - 10
2. Welded pipe supports for shop fabricated lines are installed by the
shop pipe fabricator. The mark numbers for these supports will be
identified with the typical support mark number and these mark
numbers will be shown on the piping isometrics under "Shop
Material".
Examples:
Mark number (shoe): S1 - 12 - 100 - 457
3. A special support or spring support assembly will always have its own
unique mark number, and shall be installed only at the similarly
identified location on the Piping Isometric Drawing for the identified
area. Special support and spring support details are indexed in
accordance with section 6.4. An example of a spring support mark
number is shown below.

10.2.3 Pipe Support Location Drawings
All fabricated pipe supports shall be installed at the locations indicated on the
"Location Drawing" and in accordance with the erection information provided by the
pipe support drawings, pipe support standards, and this specification. The Location
Drawing for pipe supports is the Issued for Construction (IFC) Piping Isometric.
10.2.4 Welding Requirements
Welds and welding operator shall conform to AWS D1.1. Attachments to steel
structures or vessels shall be by manual arc welding. No welding is permitted to
stress relieved vessels or piping. When welding to concrete fireproofed steel, the
fireproofing shall be removed and repaired by the field. Damage to galvanized
surfaces shall be repaired in accordance with ASTM A780.
10.2.5 Spring Supports
a. Spring supports will be preset by the pipe support supplier to a specified
"installed" load setting. Any travel stops, set screws or hydro stops provided
by the Supplier shall not be removed by Construction until after field
hydrotest. All travel stops are to be removed during pre commissioning.
FIELD PRECOMMISSIONING NOTE:
Care must be taken to ensure that all spring travel stops are removed
before piping begins to heat up or cool down. For liquid lines, the travel
stops shall be removed after the lines are flooded with operating fluid and
before significant temperature changes take place. Stops may be
removed from springs for liquid line sizes up to NPS 8 prior to flooding the
lines.
b. Base springs resting on concrete at grade or on concrete decks shall be
cinch anchored, unless anchor bolts are provided.
10.2.6 Vessel Guides for Hot Insulated Piping
Hot insulation at guides shall be installed as per Figure 2.

10.2.7 Hanger and Bracket Adjustments
Field Erector shall adjust the length of hanger rods and support brackets as indicated
on the drawings and/or as necessary for fit up. After adjusting a rod length, Field
Erector shall dress the cut end.
10.2.8 Shimming
a. Shim sets (standard SM1) shall be used by the Field Erector in shimming
supports, except where full contact shims are required such as at slide plates.
Shims shall be tackwelded together and to the support steel. Shims shall be
supplied and installed by the Field Erector.

b. For line sizes NPS 3 and larger which have a horizontal trunnion on a
platform, the Field Erector shall shim directly to the grating below, unless
noted otherwise on the Piping Isometric Drawing.
c. The Field Erector shall shim any support location where a gap has been
provided by design, unless noted otherwise on the Piping Isometric Drawing.
d. Instead of shimming, vertical trunnions with adjustable sleeve shall be
adjusted in accordance with section 10.2.12.
10.2.9 Stops on Concrete Fireproofed Beams
Line stops at concrete fireproofed beams may bear directly against the concrete
fireproofing. The concrete fireproofing shall have a minimum of concrete strength of
17.24 MPa. If fireproofing was damaged and repaired at line stop location, Field
Erector shall supply and install a steel plate between the line stop and fireproofing.
The plate shall be 25 mm greater in width than the line stop and shall have height
sufficient to extend to the bottom flange of the fireproofed beam. Field shall weld the
plate to the line stop.
10.2.10 Galvanized Pipe Support Components
a. Galvanized pipe supports (shoes, lugs, etc.) may be welded to carbon and
chrome-moly piping with the following conditions:
1. Grind off galvanizing at the weld areas to sound base metal.
2. After welding, liquid penetrant (PT) examine all weld areas for process
piping with a nominal pressure rating of ASME Class 300 and above.
b. Galvanized pipe support components shall not be welded to any stainless
steel pipe or pressure containing components. Only stainless steel materials
shall be welded to stainless steel pipe. Where stainless steel pipe rests on
galvanized support steel, Field Erector shall supply and install a 3 mm thick
stainless steel shim between pipe and support steel.
c. Grind off the galvanizing at the weld areas before welding pipe support
components (beam attachments, etc.) to structural steel. This includes the
structural steel, if it is galvanized.
b. Damage to galvanized surfaces shall be repaired in accordance with ASTM
A780.
10.2.11 Base Supports at Grade
Except where home office engineered concrete piers are provided, base supports at
grade, including base springs, shall be grouted by the Field Erector in accordance
with Standard PR1. In order to minimize the height of grout, adjustable trunnions
have been used to the maximum extent practical. In addition, the slope of the paving
has been considered in setting the point of support elevations for base trunnions,
base springs, and adjustable base supports.

10.2.12 Adjustable Trunnions
The adjustable portion of the trunnion will be tack welded in the shop. The Field
Erector shall break the tack weld, make the proper adjustments, and then weld the
adjustable sleeve to the trunnion in accordance with Standard Pipe Support Details
listed in Appendix 1.
10.2.13 Support on Trunnions
When other pipe supports are required on horizontal trunnions, such as a, guide,
etc., the location is defined in a note on the Piping Isometric. When other pipe
supports are required on vertical trunnions, such as a base spring, guide, etc., the
support shall be installed at the trunnion baseplate unless noted otherwise.
10.2.14 Guides
Where two or more lines are guided at the same steel location and the clearances
between the lines are limited, the guides may be offset from centerline of steel to
allow installation of adjacent guides.
