Dear Diary,
Yesterday was my 12th birthday. It was a memorable day of my life as I had great fun. My
parents had made arrangements for the party at my home itself. Fifteen of my friends and
four families were invited. They started coming at 6 p.m. My friends returned at about 8
p.m. but our family friends remained till 10 p.m. I cut the cake at 7 p.m. Everybody sang
for me and gave me gifts. I got many wonderful gifts like dresses, books and even a school
bag, but the best present I got was from my grandparents. They gave me a beautiful and
attractive wrist watch. Oh ! how much I love them.

Dear Diary,
Yesterday I returned from Shimla where I had gone on my school trip. The wonderful
memories of this trip will always remain in my mind. We were 48 students with 6 teachers.
The teachers became quite friendly with us. We went to Chandigarh by train, from there
we took two buses. The way was full of fun. The hotel we checked in was very good. We
saw many places. The weather over there was wonderful. After staying there for three
days, we returned from Shimla to Solan, we travelled by toy train adding more to the fun,
then by bus to Chandigarh and finally by train to Agra. I wish I could go to Shimla again
with my friends.

Today was a very lucky day for me. I got an opportunity to play a game-show. It was Khulja

whether I would like to open the door or take money. I went for the door. There I got a TV
then further he asked me the same question again, I went for the door and I was fortunate
to win a music system. There was clapping all around. Then I was called for the final round
and the game master bargained me to take ` 5 lakhs against the door. I dont know what
inspired me and I agreed to it and satisfied myself with it when the door was opened to show
what I had raised, I couldnt believe that it was nothing except a small toy fish. I thanked
God and hugged my mother. Everyone present there, congratulated me for my wonderful
achievement.

Everybody relished it. Each and every dish was enjoyed by all. After all the dishes were
tasted by the judges and the result was announced, our group was declared at the 2nd
position whereas 1st position was grabbed by the group who had prepared jaljeera. It was

DATA INTERPRETATION
(Carrying 5 marks each)
1. Result of the Students
This is a chart of a particular class, having three sections : A, B and C showing the result
of the students. According to the chart, it can be seen that the students failed in both the
exams of Section A is 20, Section B is 15 and Section C is 17. The students who have failed
in Half-yearly Examination of Section A is 12, Section B is 13 and Section C is 13. The
number of students who have passed in Half-yearly examination are very less, from Section
A, just 2 students have passed, Section B just 3 students and from Section C, 5 students
have passed. The number of students who have passed in both the exams are very high.
From Section A, 40 students have passed, From Section B, 44 have passed and from
Section C, 45 students have passed.
2. SmokingThe Greatest Killer
Smoking is becoming a big problem in the society, specially among the youth. Although
government has made certain rules for no smoking zones and there are many places
where smoking is banned yet it engulfs so many people and becomes the cause of many
diseases. According to the survey done in a society, it was found that among the places
that restrict and ban smoking, 20% are due to the risk of fire, 30% of places are prohibited
due to public places and many do not like to smoke there, whereas 43% places are completely
no smoking zone and at 7% places there is no restriction, so the people find and seek such
places where they can smoke freely, and this is becoming the main cause for many fatal
diseases.

1. Increasing Theft
Life of the people is becoming quite unsafe. The crime is on an increase, specially theft
cases. At certain places it has become difficult to leave the house locked. According to the
recent survey done in Janakpuri area of Delhi, it was seen that there is a steep rise in
theft rate between last 10 to 12 years. In the year 2000, there were only 11 cases reported
which rose to 30 in the year 2004 and the number remained almost the same for two
years, then again in 2008 it rose by few and by 2010 it reached to 45 cases but in 2012 the
theft number was really shocking. There were around 70 such cases of minor and major
thefts. The police should take some strict actions to stop this and make it a safe place to
live in.
2. Increase in Road Accidents
With the increase in population, there is an increase in vehicles on roads and it has also
become a status symbol. The youngsters today drive their vehicles so rash that it gets out
of control and they meet with an accident and many a times it is fatal. This rash driving
and avoiding traffic rules has become the major cause of these accidents. According to the
chart, it can be seen that in last 8 years in Agra there has been a steep rise in the number
of accidents. In the year 2004, the number of accidents registered were 12 with minor rise
in next two years. Then the number rose to 25 by the year 2008 then in the next 2 years
the number of accidents registered were about 40 but the year 2012 saw a major rise and
the number rose to 55. It is really shocking and these are the cases which are registered,
other than these cases there must have been many smaller accident cases. Therefore
there should be restriction on fast driving and punishment for breaking rules.

2. Description of a Village
Recently I got an opportunity to visit a village called Khelar near our city Agra. The
village, as I had expected was really beautiful, you feel yourself close to the nature. The
agricultural fields were full of greenery with mature and ripened mustard plants. In some
fields, there were many trees yielding guavas. The houses there were not big except a
few. Huts made of straw could also be seen. But it was really pity to see that these people
do not value education nor are there any good schools nearby. Many of the farmers lead
poor and miserable life but they are rich in healthy and pollution free environment.

I am really sorry for the blunder done by me. I actually made a list of my friends and
made a phone call to them and went on ticking the names. I tried your phone but could
not connect, but due to some mistake I ticked your name also and was sure I have called
you.
But when on the picnic, Lavish told me that you have not been invited. I could not
spare myself and felt guilty all the time. Your annoyance is genuine. Please forgive me.
We shall have a separate treat. Im sure youll understand me.
With Love

Sub : Adventurous trip to Himalayas
Dear Rishabh,
I would like to share my experience of my recent adventurous trip combined with
fun to Himalayas. During Diwali vacation I went to the hills of Rishikesh, where we
stayed in a camp. It was like heaven away from the pollution of the city. I had never
thought hills to be so beautiful but they are really fascinating.
We did trekking which seemed to be difficult initially but soon we were at ease, we
did rock climbing and played treasure hunt. All these activities increased my confidence.
I even made some friends who were there from other schools. It was a great learning
experience for me.
Yours lovingly

1. Pollution
Deepak
(Class X)
Pollution has become a big problem. The material prosperity and technological advancement
has been responsible for sound, air and water pollution. Mushrooming up of industries
and domestic waste pollute air and water. The industrial waste also makes the agricultural
fields infertile. Cutting of forests and conversion of agricultural land into residential areas
are becoming a major cause of pollution. Increase in vehicles is also a leading reason to
add to the problem, people are forced to wear masks. The temperature is increasing
globally, glaciers and icebergs are melting as a result they disturb the seasonal cycle. We
are the ones who are responsible for this pollution, so we should only take the steps
immediately to reduce it. We should have chimney in industries which let out clear smoke,
industrial waste should be treated before being flown into the rivers and the vehicles
should be tested from time to time. Pollution, if not stopped, can atleast be reduced to
certain extent.
2. Drug AbuseA Social Evil
Rohan
(Class IX)
Drugs have become very common in our society. It is a social evil which makes the person
hollow from inside. Drugs are of many kinds, but basically the harmful ones are the
narcotic drugs, person once used to it cannot come out of the habit. He or she becomes
addicted to it and it becomes impossible to pass a day without taking the dose. The body
becomes so accustomed to it that without it the person feels lifeless. These drugs along
with harming the health also harm the pocket because they are very expensive. People
try to get it by hook or crook and if they dont have money, they indulge into wrong
activities like theft and selling off their own expensive things. These days youth is becoming
addicted to it. They are not only harming themselves and their families but also the
society. A watchful eye should be kept on the people who sell it and strict actions should be
taken against them. People addicted should be sent to rehabilitation centres before it
becomes too late.

1. Child Labour
Jai
(Class VIII)
Child labour is very common in India, specially in hazardous industries like glass factories,
carpet factories, etc. In glass factories, one can see children sitting in small cells in front
of furnaces and working there. They are not paid well and due to darkness and heat they
lose their eyesight at a very young age. They are so much indulged into this work that
they forget about everything. These hazardous conditions make them prone to diseases.
They fall ill frequently and many a times they even become prey to fatal diseases like
asthma, tuberculosis etc. and due to of the shortage of money, these children do not get
proper treatment. At the age of playing and studying these children become the earning
members of their families. Child labour should he banned and strict actions should be
taken against the people who promote child labour.
2. DecorationA waste of Money
Tarun
(Class IX)
In India we celebrate every auspicious occasion with great devotion and dedication, every
happy moment is pious. We make the occasion all the more welcoming by decorating the
place but at times we over-do the things. Especially on weddings we see that people spend
so much on decoration which is not required, it is their way to flaunt their wealth and
show their social status but they forget that with simple decoration also the moments can
be enjoyed and made equally pious where-as this money being spent on decoration can be
used for other social cause. If one starts doing this and the matter being published, many
hungry mouths will be fed and many will enjoy few good moments of life, therefore if
thought positively the money spent on pomp and show of decoration can be stopped.

1. Good Morning respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends. Today, I, Garvit is going
to express my views on the topic Machines are good slaves but bad master.
We are living in the age of machines, we cannot imagine our lives without fans, vehicles,
electrical appliances etc. but it is sad that we are becoming its slaves, because we are
becoming addicted to the comforts these things provide us. They are simple machines,
when they stop working we become which helpless.
Today even to go to a small distance we need a vehicle, we dont want to walk, if there is
no electricity we behave as though we cannot live without it, most of our household works
come to a stop. But it is really sad that we dont think that due to these habits we are
putting ourselves into trouble. We are being attacked by many diseases at a very small
age as we dont do any physical exercise. These diseases are obesity, diabetes, heart attack
etc. many of these diseases are fatal.
Therefore, we should use machines judiciously, you should be its master. It should work
as your slave.
Thank You.
2. Good Morning respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends. Today, I, Preity would
like to express my thoughts on Aping westernization does not mean modernization !
Today we believe that following western culture will make us modern, modernization has
become synonym to westernization. India is famous for its rich culture but we are observed
with the views that if we dress up like western country people, eat their food and speak
like them we modernize forgetting that our culture is being ruined.
Modernization means being open to the modern developments, techniques, achieving good
education, coming out of the superstitious beliefs and being liberal in our views. We should
try to make our life expand. Medical sciences should be enhanced and life should be lived
happily with contentment. If we have all this, we are modernized.
Wearing short dresses, enjoying Pizza and burgers but with no love and respect for each
other does not make us modern. Modernization and westernization are two different aspects.
Thank You.

1. Growing Violence among Children
Good Morning, respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends. Today, I, Lalit is going
to speak on the topic Growing violence among children.
These days we see children getting aggressive at small matters, they fight with each other
for insignificant things. Many a times, we come across the news that a student of class VII
or VIII shot his classmate, or fought and attempted to murder etc.
What is the cause of all this. What I believe is that TV is playing a very important role in
this. Children watch serials, they play video games which are based on violence. They
develop the same attitude. The parents should see that their wards get proper love and
care and they should be sure that their wards get time to play outdoor games, so that they
develop the habit of love and sharing.
Violence does not only harm the person who is violent but the entire society also. So let us
all take an oath that well behave with love and affection in society.
Thank You.
2. Importance of Discipline in Life
Good Morning to all present here. Today, I, Dhruv would like to present my views on the
Importance of Discipline in Life.
Discipline is a virtue which makes human beings different from animals. We should live
in discipline because only discipline helps a person to lead a respectable life. We should
know how to behave, when to go and where. Discipline does not only mean doing work
expected of you but also doing it in the right manner. We all come to school but dont you
think it is a part of discipline to come on time and in proper school uniform. Discipline
means to move properly everywhere without hampering the right of others. If there is no
discipline, there will be chaotic conditions everywhere.
To let live a happy and peaceful life, living a self-disciplined life is must.
Thank You.

2. Children Working in Hazardous Conditions
Nishant
(Hindustan Times)
Firozabad, 23rd November 20XX
In Firozabad most of the people can be seen working in glass factories. It is really pathetic
to see the children working there because the conditions there are miserable.
Many children below the age of 14 years can be seen working in glass factories in dingy
cells with hardly any light. The children when asked the reason replied, they had to work
to support their families
They are unable to adjust their eyes in light and many young were found to have lost their
eyesight at a very small age.
These children belong to poor families where instead of sending them to school it becomes
a compulsion to send them to work. The children overall were found to be working in
hazardous conditions.

1. Mysterious Night
Once a traveller was travelling on a horse back with a view to explore the city, while
riding he came across a remote area and all of a sudden the sky was covered with dark
clouds and it started raining heavily. He rushed but due to rain the horse couldnt run
fast, finally he came across a cottage, without hesitating he knocked at the door but he got
no response, although he could hear the sounds coming from inside, he knocked even
loudly, suddenly the door opened and he was pulled inside. He was shocked and when he
became a bit normal he realised that the people sitting there were indulged in drug addiction,
he was surprised and soon he also started behaving as though he also needed drugs, he
bought them and hid them in his pocket acting as though he was under the spell of those
narcotics. When everybody was totally lost, he slipped out of the room, climbed his horse
and ran away from there, he straight away went to the police station, informed the police
and with his efforts police was able to raid the place. Addicted people were sent to the
rehabilitation centre and next day it was in the news headlines.
2. United we Stand, Divided we Fall
There was a farmer, his name was Charan Das, he had four sons Ramesh, Deepak, Jagat
and Ravi. They all kept on quarrelling with each other. Charan Das was very worried as
he was getting old, he thought that if his sons will not live unitedly, they will waste the
entire wealth. He planned to teach them a lesson.
He called four of his sons to him and gave them one stick each asking them to break, the
boys were surprised at this and could easily, break it. Then the farmer gave them each a
pile of four sticks and asked them to break, no one could do it.
He told his sons that this shows that if they will fight, they will be alone and easily cheated
by others but if they will stay together they can never be cheated, rather they will be more
strong and do a good business.
All the sons realised their mistake and promised never to quarrel with each other but stay
united. This made him happy.

1. Hard Work Pays
There were two boys Baljeet and Kuldeep. They were best friends. Baljeet belonged to a
rich family and could afford to buy whatever he wanted to, but Kuldeep belonged to a poor
family, when sometimes he was even unable to pay his tuition fee Baljeet would help him
in that. They both loved each other and were ready to help each other. There was only one
main difference that Baljeet was not good at studies. Kuldeep used to help him in studies
and always ask him to study hard as he himself was quite good.
They studied together till grade X and after that Baljeets parents send him to Shimla for
further studies, he completed his management course but with average marks whereas
Kuldeep stayed in the same city, completed his management course from there itself but
with flying colors. He got placement in Delhi in a big company as Senior Manager directly.
When he joined the company and was introduced to his subordinates, he was surprised to
see Baljeet working as a Junior manager under him. He was happy and excited but
controlled himself later they met each other, hugged and enjoyed.
In office they were serious and after that their friendship continued.
2. Dog, the Most Faithful Friend
There was a man named Raman, he worked as a manager in one of the insurance companies,
he had a wife named Sapna and one daughter and one son. They all lived a happy life in
Lucknow. They also had a pet dog, whom they called Boozo. The dog was very faithful. He
loved them all.
One day Mr. Raman while returning from office met with an accident. He was so injured
that his left limbs became paralysed, he was unable to walk and move his left arm. He was
confined to bed.
At first the dog felt bad, thinking that he was being ignored but finally it seemed he
understood the problem. He used to come and force Mr. Raman to raise his hand and pat
him. One day Mr. Raman took hold of the string round his neck, he pulled it out which
forced Mr. Raman to get on to his feet although he couldnt stand for more than a minute
but this gave him courage. Gradually the same exercise helped him to move for few steps
and a day came when Mr. Raman could walk, although not very straight but yes, the
medicines and the efforts of Boozo helped Mr. Raman to stand on his feet and gain
confidence. Mr. Raman resumed his duties after four months and all the family felt obliged
to their pet. They were thankful to the devotion of their pet.

II. Long Answer Type Questions
1. Comets can be new as they come from the distant corners of the solar system. Like
planets they orbit round the sun. When a comet comes near the sun, its longish tail shines
in the sunlight. Then it disappears for many years. This is how the comets are explained
in the story. It was called Comet-Dutta because the comet was discovered by the
calculations of Duttadas. (5 marks)
2. The important point discussed in James paper was that the new comet will collide with
the earth. It should have not been published according to Sir John, because after publishing

(1 mark)
II. Long Answer Type Questions
1. After organising a secret confrence. The experts checked James calculations again and
again. At last the scientists came to the conclusion that there was no espace from comets
direct hit on the earth. There was a little chance that the comet may only gaze the
atmosphere of the earth. This made confined Duttada that the comet was not going to
collide with earth. (5 marks)
Indrani was sure that the comet dutta had not been disastrous because of the yojna.
2. (i) Duttadas outlook is rational, because he does not believe in outdated rituals and
ceremonies. He has a scientific attitude to a life this was not traditional. A scientist
has to go by reason, not by morality.
(ii) Copernicus (14731543) was a polis astronomer. He put forward the theory that the
earth orbits the sun. Until the Ptolemys theory was generally accepted. The theory
was that the earth was the centre of the universe. heavenly bodies rotated around it.
Copernicus theory went against the traditional theory as well as the Bible. But
Copernicus findings were not suppressed.
Galileo (15641642) the Italian scientist also accepted Copernicus theory. But in 1633,
he was made recant by the church. However, even then the earth revolved round the
sun as it does now. So, we gain nothing by suppressing a scientists findings. Truth
should come to light however disturbing it may be. (5 marks)
