Below: Last months Flatting Expo Level 2, The Student Centre MASSEY MANAWATU Greetings all,
The semester break is just around the corner. It is unbelievable that it has come around so quickly. After the break, there are only 6 weeks left until the study break for exams!
We have just had our University Open Day in which many prospective students visited our campus. The campus was vibrant despite the weather and we had many view the Halls. Many of you also attended the Ball in which it seemed to be an enjoyable night. Check out the photos on the Massey Manawatu Halls Facebook page.
We have a couple of events that may be of interest to you next month. The Manawatu Rugby Union is organising a Rugby Max tournament for the Halls. This is a social 10 aside tournament for both males and females. For more information check out our Facebook page and there are also posters in your Halls. For several years now we have also been involved in a tree planting project at Pitt Park in town. We will give you more details about this as soon as possible as to how you can be involved with this.
The weather is still cool so be sure to keep warm. Enjoy the break. Residents were unaware what surprises awaited them at the Distinction Hotel with the Halls Ball. The venue was transformed into an Oriental paradise with pillars, red carpet and lanterns lining the entrance into the ball room. From cherry blossoms surrounding a water feature, oriental style doors to intense red and purple lighting, and drapes and projected images of dragons and Mount Fuji, the room looked fantastic. Congratulations to William Fitzgerald from Tawa Hall for winning the van Meer suit hire Voucher, Claudia Chadwick from City Court for winning the Phoenix makeup application, and to Penelope Suckling from Totara Hall who with seven of her friends cruised around Palmerston North in a stretched limousine for an hour before the ball. The all important platters of food not only had an Asian influence of spring rolls, samosas and pork wontons, but also the all amazing fish and chips, squid rings, mussels, prawns, sausage rolls and lots of different flavoured pizzas. What a feast! The photo room displayed a unique backdrop board painted by the very dedicated Ball Committee Team, featuring a Dragon and Phoenix representing a King and Queen living harmoniously. No surprises that the photo room was a huge success with repeat offenders and several hundred photos taken throughout the night. These can now be viewed at our Massey Manawatu Halls of Residence facebook page. Ball attendees were kept entertained by our live band, Six Chairs Missing, who played a range of covers. As always, the most popular song from the band was Wagon Wheel and from the DJ music it was Turn down for what. We loved seeing that dance floor pumping the whole night! The night was one to remember and made possible by the efforts of Image Group NZ, Bernadette Peters Photography, PPS Security, Distinction Hotel, Tranzit and of course our Accommodation Services team. A huge thank you to everyone for contributing to such a successful night. Thanks to everyone who attended, especially those who cut up some mean shapes on the d-floor! It was so awesome to see everyone have an amazing time! HALLS BALL Finding all the need to know information with regards to Flatting next year has become a lot less daunting for all the residents who turned up to the Flatting Expo a few weeks ago. This year we had a great number of exhibitors in attendance all eager and willing to help support students in the Palmerston North community. There was plenty of information on hand including health and safety with electrical equipment, safety issues while out in town, and flatting contractual issues to consider. Student insurance was also highlighted and with increased pressures on finances, many tips from the budgeting table were on hand. We would like to thank those who supported the event this year Professionals, MUSA, Tenancy Union, Housing Advice, Massey Budgeting Service, ANZ, Central Rentals, PNCC, NZ Fire Service, NZ Police, ACC, Horizons, Electrical Safety, Horizons, SafeCity, Facilities Management, and The Unichem Chemist Shop by Pak n Save. Congratulations also to the many winners of prizes at each of the stands. Congratulations to the Accommodation Services stand winner, Stephanie Kerrisk from Moginie Hall who won a George Foreman Grill and a great food basket sponsored by the MUSA Shop If you missed out on the Expo, we still have a useful resource for you. Please check out the accommodation website for the pdf of the Flatters Guide. f you haven't organised your flatting reference yet, you can pop up to the reception at Accommodation Services to sign up for one. Please remember that references will take 5 working days to process. FLATTING EXPO To the bike and this could be the crucial leg. Luke McDermott smashes out a great ride and they are right on track to beat Colombos time. Jack van Bussel puts a great row in and they finish in 25:12! Moginie dont give it away and finish just under 3 minutes later in 28:07.
The last round was unable to find a team to challenge Matai 1, Colombo Chiefs 2 or Moginie 1 and they finished 1, 2 and 3 in the final tally. Big congratulations to all the teams who entered and fronted up on the day, your efforts were outstanding! A special mention to Monica Schinkel who endured the 7km bike; for a while I wondered if it would end! The day dawned fine, albeit a little cool but who cared, the Run, Ride, Row challenge for 2014 was inside at the Recreation Centre! A three person event that consisted of a 3km run on the treadmill, 7kms on a stationary bike and 1.5km on the indoor rower. Any three of those can be a challenge on a Sunday morning, yet 18 hall teams had risen to the challenge. Colombo dominated the list with 6 teams, Moginie with 5, two from both Kiwitea and Moginie and one each from Tawa, City and a RA composite team. Unfortunately sickness (not sure what type!) had swept through Matai hall and two teams had to withdraw.
So an 11am start and K2 Kiwitea and the Colombo Chiefs go head to head. Ian, Alan and Toni set the bench mark, 38 minutes 43 seconds. Round 2 and 4 teams line up. The intensity increases and the RA team of Mark, Jason & Rashmi strut their stuff but get taken down by a committed Matai 3 team who set a new winning time of 31 minutes flat, 41 seconds back to the RAs and only a 4 minute spread across the 4 teams.
Round 3 and the big guns have come out to play! Quin Hartley from Colombo Chiefs 2 and Myles Price Moor from Matai 2 go at it on the treadmill; 17kph start and it didnt end there! Quin pulled ahead slightly with the last kilometre at 20kph to give his team a slight advantage going into the bike. Regan and Brandon took that lead out even further to knock just over 5 minutes of the previous best and be over 2 minutes ahead of Matai at the finish. Colombo Chiefs 2 time, 25:28! Round 4. Could a team go quicker? Matai 1, Moginie 1 and another Colombo team take to the treadmill. A solid start from Sam Malcolm sets Matai up for a good time and Moginie chase hard. See you there! Colin Day On behalf of the chaplains By the time you read this the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will be just a reasonably warm glow in Kiwis collective memory. The country will now be focussing on its annual review of the All Blacks chances in their upcoming games. Central to this anguished self examination (incomprehensible to all overseas students) will be detailed analysis of Richie McCaws longevity, Dan Carters physical frailty and the unimaginable horror of losing to the Australians.
Often our sense of self esteem is based on the most superficial and transitory of factors; perceived social status, material prosperity. or sporting success even! Hopefully, during your time at Massey, you will give serious thought to the values and priorities that will govern your life in all its different contexts and the basis and viability of those values. More than anything else they will shape the sort of person you become and your capacity to cope with the different circumstances life will throw at you. MID SEMESTER BREAK

MASSEY EVENTS Massey Agriculture vs Lincoln University Annual Rugby and Netball 2014
Saturday 20 th September 2014 (Election Day!)
Netball: Enid Hills Memorial Trophy Match 12pm start in the Rec Centre Sports Hall, all spectators welcome Rugby: LA Brooks Trophy Match 3.30pm kick off on the Sport and Rugby Institute Fields, all spectators welcome
These annual matches take place each year but the location alternates so in Masseys 50 th year, 2014, the match is here and we want to win!!! Please come along and support the Massey Agriculture teams as they endeavour to reclaim both trophies after losing them in Lincoln last year.
History of the rivalry The LA Brooks Cup and the MOG Trophy will be up for grabs on Saturday 20 September 2014. The Massey Ag XV will be trying to win the trophy back on home soil - a worthy celebration of the Universitys 50th year! - after losing out to Lincoln in 2013. The LA Brooks Trophy was first contested in 1952 then reinstated after a 39-year hiatus from 1966-2005. The LA Brooks Cup, was named after the donor who was the mother of a former Lincoln student called Harold Brooks, the winning team also receives the MOG Shield, a wooden trophy bearing a remarkable resemblance to a toilet seat.
In 2011, a netball game between the two sides was also added and this has become an annual fixture of this tournament weekend. The trophy for this game is dedicated to Enid Hills who was the first female student at Massey University in 1932 and studied in the field of agriculture. This trophy was first awarded in 2012 to Massey after a nail biting 36-34 win, but it was lost to Lincoln in 2013. STUDENT COUNSELLING Massey Marquee Taupo Cycle Challenge

There are a number of self-help strategies you can use to improve your sleep hygiene and improve your quality of sleep, but if there are underlying health issues or emotional worries and stresses it is helpful to talk to a professional as well and seek other supports. Go to bed only when you are sleepy. Do not use your bed for anything except sleep (and intimacy) If you find yourself unable to fall asleep, get up! Read a book write a letter, do something. Stay up as long as you wish and then return to bed to sleep. Do not watch the clock and worry about not sleeping. Get out of bed if you do not fall asleep fairly quickly. Get up at the same time every morning, irrespective of how much sleep you had during the night. This will help your body to acquire a consistent sleep rhythm. It is often more about when you wake than when you fall asleep. Once you wake get up and go outside as soon as possible (or, if it is cold, at least open the curtains and try for some natural light as this helps reset the body clock) Do not nap during the day.
Additional Tips Wind down an hour before bed and avoid TV and computers during this time (something about the frequency of the screen appears to stimulate the brain rather than calm it) Reduce caffeine (including energy drinks) and alcohol intake late in the day. Reduce physical and mental stimulation late in the day if you are studying late, try to give yourself about 30 minutes of wind down time. Exercise late in the afternoon or early evening. Do not have a visible bedroom clock. Have a light carbohydrate or dairy snack before bedtime. Avoid chocolate or large amounts of sugar. Avoid drinking large amounts of fluid late in the day. Have a hot bath or shower early on in the evening the drop of body temperature helps signal to your brain that it is time for sleep.
Where to from here? Different things work for different people! Feel free to contact Student Counselling Service if you find your sleep problems arent improving, or if they are seriously interfering with your daily life. I Just Cant Sleep! As the pressure of work increases and we become more stressed, many students approach the Health & Counselling Services about difficulty sleeping. There can be numerous reasons for sleeplessness as well as numerous helpful strategies which appeal to different people.
At Student Counselling we have numerous ways of assisting (also use the self-help resources on http://CROW.massey.ac.nz ) and you can borrow relaxation and sleep inducing CDs which are very effective.
Students generally have shocking sleep hygiene going to bed as the sun rises and sleeping until mid-afternoon. The body does not generally work like that and needs a fairly regular pattern if sleep is going to be effective. Apart from resting, sleep has an essential function in helping our brains to sift and sort information gleaned during the day so all that material you have been studying needs to be filed in the brain during sleep! So pulling an all-nighter during the exams is seldom effective! Long term sleep problems may be a symptom of a health problem such as anxiety, depression or a physical illness. If your sleep difficulties have persisted for several months, it would be useful for you to check this out with a professional, such as a medical doctor or a counsellor. However remember that no-one ever died through lack of sleep (well, almost no-one!) and insomnia is not a disease which requires medication in the long term.
