COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Time in class will need to be used appropriately as I only assign homework if its absolutely
needed. Use the time given in class to practice your skills and do your work so that you are able
to keep pace with the course.

Due Dates will be set with a reasonable amount of time for you to finish a given project. It is
your job as a student in this class to make sure to keep track of due dates and keep me aware of
anything that comes up not allowing you to meet the deadline. Assignments handed in late will
not be accepted.

Equipment will be cared for and treated with respect. The equipment we use in this class is
costly and not always replaceable so please take care so that future students will be able to have
the same experiences as you. Each set of turnouts, boots, and helmets costs around $3000!

COURSE MATERIALS
2 inch Binder, Writing utensils, Notebook, Textbook, Good Attitude, Index cards

GRADING POLICY
1. Everything is based off of the 5 point proficiency scale
2. Your PowerSchool will reflect this with each entry being worth 5 pts.
3. You can redo work to demonstrate a higher level of proficiency.
4. Your grade can also move back into the non-proficient category if on the second try, you
dont show that you fully understand the concept. (Second attempts on large projects such
as research papers and projects are only permitted if the original due date is met)
5. Your final grade will be based on the average of your total points using this scale:

6. Students are responsible for knowing all of the information in the assigned reading
materials.

STATION HOURS:
Each of you are required to spend 7 hours (3.5 per quarter) of your time at University Fire
Department. Here you will truly see what the life of a firefighter is really like. You will work on
your task check off sheet and go calls as needed. More on this will be given later.

WORKING AS A TEAM
You will be assigned to a company at the beginning of the year. Your company will be your
family in this class. Youll perform all tasks together. As a group, you start the semester with 25
points and you will keep them as long as you sit together, work together, help eachother out on
assignments, etc. Companies not showing a sense of togetherness will loose points in 5pt.
increments.

UNDERSTANDING THE RULE:
Dont be RUDE, CRUDE, LEWD, NUDE, OR SOCIALLY UNACCEPTABLE.

*Specifics are addressed in Mrs. Kaisers Policies and Procedures*

REWARDS AND CONSEQUENCES:
Professionalism Points: Every day your class will earn up to 5 points daily depending on your
collective demonstration of professional behavior. Earn 100 professionalism points and you
have earned a reward day voted on by the class. You will automatically start the period with 5
points. They will be taken away when students do not show up ready for class or follow policies
and procedures. They can also be gained back by doing the exact opposite. ***This is an effort
by the class as a whole and will take teamwork to get to your reward day.

Personal Professionalism Points: Youll start the semester with 50 personal professionalism
points that will be entered as a graded assignment. This will be a large part of your grade. You
automatically start with 50 and will only lose points if you are unprofessional in some way. For
example:

1. Not showing up at the station when you signed up for a shift.
2. Not wearing your Fire Hawk uniform on Tuesday.
3. Not wearing your uniform correctly
4. Turning in assignments late.
**For each offense you will lose 5 pts.

Consequences:
1. Verbal warning/Loss of professionalism point for the class/Gain of pushup
2. Lunch Detention and/or invitation to stay late with me after class.
3. Principle referral and/or a call to your parents.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS:
Since most of your work will be done in class it is important for you to be here. Make up time
for legitimate absences will be available (see HHS student handbook). Unexcused absences will
not be awarded with extra time to finish a project.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
I am pleased to have your student enrolled in my Intro to Fire Services course. This is a unique
opportunity that will allow him/her to experiment in the skills, knowledge, and equipment of the
professional firefighter. Your students experience will be as authentic and true to life as possible and
therefore comes with some risks and stressors that a normal academic class does not have.
First and foremost, firefighting can be quite physically challenging. There will be times that
certain skills require the student to maneuver and handle heavy equipment while wearing the equivalent
of a snowsuit. In short, they will sweat and work hard. If for any reason you feel that your student is not
capable of physical exertion we can discuss a plan of action.
Second, you may already know that the fire service is considered paramilitary. This means that
discipline and structure is very important. Staying true to fire service origins, students should expect
some amount of discipline training including group push-ups and marching. Weve even got a day of
boot camp planned in which a drill instructor will come in and teach your student how to march and
drill like pros. Again, if at any point you feel as though your student should not participate in such
activities, you should communicate with me at once.
Last, some of the activities your student will participate in come with some risk. These activities
include but are not limited to: use of power tools, climbing and manipulating ladders, fire extinguishment,
and ice rescue. While I will do everything I can to make each and every situation as safe as possible,
certain risks do come with the territory.
As a teacher, I understand that it is key for you and I to communicate and while I know that this
class falls outside of the norm and does indeed have its risks; I feel your student can gain much from it.
It is my goal as the instructor for your students class to keep you involved and in-the-know of
what goes on in this classroom. Ive got an exciting year planned for your student. Please read through
the attached syllabus and contact me if you have any questions. As an ongoing effort to keep parents and
guardians involved, I would like to send weekly updates on this classs progress. For that reason I ask
that you provide your phone and email address below. Thank you for taking the time to read through the
syllabus. Its going to be a great year!

Sincerely,
Laura Kaiser

Movie Permission Form

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

Our school suggests a parental permission for your student to view movies that are used for
reward purposes, or that are selected by our teachers, which are rated PG-13.

We understand that in some scenes within this movie harsh language is used and/or references to
sexuality, and therefore we will not show a movie for a reward activity unless every parent or
guardian of students in Exploring Health Careers feels this is an acceptable reward activity for
their student to take part in.
If you choose not to allow your student to partake in such movies, that is no problem at all. We
will simply watch films that are PG or lower.

Thank you for taking the time to read this permission form.

Sincerely,
Laura Kaiser
