HYMNs OF PRAISE

HOLD TO GOD’S IN THE GARDEN
UNCHANGING HAND Verse I
Verse I I come to the garden alone,
Time is filled with swift transition. While the dew is still on the roses;
Naught of earth unmoved can stand. And the voice I hear, falling on my ear,
Build your hopes on things eternal The Son of God discloses.
Hold to God’s unchanging hand.
Refrain
Chorus
And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
Hold to His hand, God’s unchanging hand.
And He tells me I am His own,
Hold to His hand, God’s unchanging hand. And the joy we share as we tarry there,
Build your hopes on things eternal None other has ever known.
Hold to God’s unchanging hand.

Verse II Verse II
Trust in Him who will not leave you. He speaks, and the sound of His voice is so sweet
Whatsoever years may bring. The birds hush their singing;
If by earthly friends forsaken. And the melody that He gave to me
Still more closely to Him cling. Within my heart is ringing
(Repeat Chorus)
(Repeat Chorus)

Verse III Verse III

Covet not this world’s vain riches. I’d stay in the garden with Him
That so rapidly decay. Though the night around me be falling;
Seek to gain the heav’nly treasures But He bids me go, through the voice of woe,
Your enraptured soul will view. His voice to me is calling.
(Repeat Chorus) (Repeat Chorus)

Verse IV
When your journey is completed,
If to God you have been true,
Fair and bright the home in Glory
Your enraptured soul will view.
(Repeat Chorus)

GOYA LOPES:
THE AFRICAN DIASPORA IN BRAZIL
Please join us for an exclusive evening reception and art exhibition with
Brazilian artist Goya Lopes.

GOYA LOPES: The African Diaspora in Brazil

through February 29, 2008
Opening Reception: January 30, 2008, 5 – 8 p.m. with Artist Talk at 6 p.m.

Panel Discussion:
The African Diaspora: Looking Back to Move Forward
January 30, 2008, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., 1104 S. Wabash Ave, Room 402

Moderator Dr. Stephanie Shonekan (Columbia College) and panelists Dr. Glennon
Graham (Columbia College), Dr. Cadence Wynter (Columbia College), Dr. Carol Lee
(Northwestern), and Dr. Maria de Lourdes Siqueria (Brazil) will discuss the historical,
social and political trajectories of Africa and the African diaspora.
As part of Columbia College Chicago’s annual African Heritage Celebration,
Columbia’s [C]Spaces and Liberal Education department present the exhibition
Goya Lopes: The African Diaspora in Brazil. Goya Lopes uses textile design as the primary medium to create
the story of the various African cultures and experiences transported to Brazil during the period of the slave
trade. With the use of large swaths of hand-stamped cloth, Lopes will present a visual timeline beginning
with the first enslaved Africans brought to Brazil and concluding with today’s diverse and flourishing
diaspora.
The African diaspora is global, yet each country’s experience has been distinct. Artists have played a vital
role in preserving and passing down the history from generation to generation. In Bahia, Brazil,
Goya Lopes is one such artist.

Goya Lopes: The African Diaspora in Brazil is part of Columbia College’s ongoing, institution-wide
initiative, Critical Encounters. This year’s Critical Encounters focus is Poverty and Privilege. The College
has chosen this focus as a way of questioning the complex myths and realities that arise out of our cultural
and social beliefs about those who have and those who have not.

STEWARDSHIP

the results of a Redeemed LifE

IT’S THE MONEY

R
ecently, a friend of mine asked the question, “Would you believe me, if
I told you that our Lord spoke about money more than any other one
thing?” My first reaction was, “He wouldn’t do a thing like that! He was
too spiritual.”
Remember the parables of the lost coin, the laborers of the vineyard, the rich
fool, the talents, the hidden treasure, the unjust steward, the pearl of great price,
the two debtors, the rich man and the beggar? And, of course, the parable of the
Good Samaritan who paid a victim’s motel bill? Remember Jesus’ encounter with
the rich young ruler, “sell all you have,” and the Prodigal Son who demanded his
inheritance; and Zacchaeus, who made grandiose promises about his ill-gotten
wealth? Or, remember his discussion about paying taxes to the temple and to
Caesar, or even his actions in driving the money changers out of the temple? Isn’t
it strange, or is it very natural, that our Lord should find stewardship such an
interesting topic? Ever wonder why?
When someone tells me, “It ain’t the money, but the principle of the thing…”
it’s the money. A church is guided by principle, but run with money. Everyone’s
support helps a church to be effective.

Your Friends in Service,

The Stewardship Ministry
