WASTE MATERIALS

The purpose of the SOP Disposal Of Asbestos Contaminated Waste Materials
is to train the operating personnel for safe disposal of these carcinogenic
materials.

INTROD&CTION
Asbestos is $ell recogni%ed as a health ha%ard and its use has been stopped in
&b Thermal Po$er station. '(posures occur $hile remo!ing asbestos during
reno!ation or demolition. Procedures for proper disposal of asbestos)containing
$astes in!ol!e proper isolation* collection and pac+aging. The asbestos)
containing $aste must be +ept $et during each step of the procedure to pre!ent
fiber release into the air. Land filling is the recommended disposal method
because asbestos fibers are !irtuall, immobile in soil.

This includes a full)bod, suit* helmet* safet, shoes* glo!es* safet, glass . dust
mas+ $hile handling the asbestos $astes.
COLLECTION
Asbestos materials ha!e been used in the plant in roofing sheets of some of the
buildings and in cooling to$ers in &TPS. The detail list of areas $here asbestos
materials are in use ha!e been gi!en in Anne(u#e ) I. /ut during reno!ation or
demolition of e(isting asbestos material* asbestos contaminated $aste is
generated.
-. All asbestos $aste collecting procedures shall be done in the asbestos
abatement area b, persons $earing full protecti!e e0uipment.
1. All asbestos $aste shall be +ept $et during the collection and pac+aging
procedure. The $aste shall be collected in plastic bags* $hich are airtight
and puncture resistant.
2. An, $aste materials $ith sharp edges such as floor* $all or ceiling tiles
should not be placed in the bag. These items should be neatl, stac+ed
together.
3. These pieces are to be +ept on lined surface $ith a co!er till disposal.
DISPOSAL
4. Disposal of asbestos should be made in a lined pit ha!ing imper!ious
surface.
5. The disposal site is then co!ered $ith at least 5 inches of compacted non)
asbestos)containing soil and then capped $ith concrete.
6. After capping a displa, board shall be erected mentioning the site as
asbestos $aste disposal area $ith si%e of the pit.

7. Care should be ta+en regarding drainage of storm $ater abo!e and around
the pit.
8. 9ecords should be maintained $ith information li+e source of asbestos
$aste* 0uantit, of the $aste* period of $aste generation.

CONTROLLIN* T+E E,POS&RE
Controlling the e(posure during handling asbestos is done through engineering
controls* administrati!e actions* and personal protecti!e e0uipment.
-. 'ngineering controls include such things as isolating the source and using
!entilation s,stems.
1. Administrati!e actions include limiting the $or+ers e(posure time and
pro!iding sho$ers.
2. Personal protecti!e e0uipment includes $earing the proper respirator,
protection and clothing.
3. &t is also ensured that no asbestos materials $ill be procured or used in &TPS.
4. Presentl, $hate!er asbestos materials are in place in &TPS* the same $ill be
replaced b, other non asbestos materials in a phased manner.
