ne way to reduce risk is to educate, and as

someone reminded me recently, education never stops. In the crane and rigging
industry, education means training, certification,
qualification, and information. If you, as a crane
owner, arent making information and education
available to your employees, you arent doing
everything you can to reduce risk on the job.
Your training program should include a library
of proper crane and rigging texts and manuals
that not only your training staff can access, but
your crew members as well. In addition to crane
and equipment users manuals, your training
department should already have all of the ASME
B30 volumes on safe operations of various types
of cranes, slings, below-the-hook devices, and
ancillary equipment. But one of the newest and
best documents available now is the ASME P30.1
volume, Planning for Load-Handling Activities.
Though its a mere 20 pages, its invaluable for
painting a picture of the lift-planning circle to
reduce risk for everyone involved in the process.
This months Business Issues feature, on page 20,
talks about the P30.1 volume and risk management solutions.
For a detailed sketch of rigging engineering,
your training library should include a copy of J.
Keith Andersons Rigging Engineering Basics.
Considered a bible for engineers in the crane
and rigging industry, the text suits newcomers
as well as veterans. You can read a review of the
text in this months Spotlight: Rigging article on
page 28. The thing it does well is it complements some of the other reference books in our
industry, said Jim Yates of Barnhart Crane &
Rigging. In the last 20 years, there havent been
that many books written for engineers in the
field of rigging and cranes.

Yates also ticked off his must-have list of crane

and rigging reference books. On the crane side,
Howard Shapiro and his company wrote the
quintessential book about cranes in our industry,
Cranes & Derricks. That book stood by itself, but
in the last few years, several books have come out
to complement engineers in our industry, said
Yates. Andersons book deals with rigging and is
a good complement to Shapiros on cranes.
He also noted Dave Duerrs recent gantry
operations reference guide, Telescopic Hydraulic Gantry Systems, and The Art of Heavy
Transport, which is Marco van Daals book on
platform trailers and heavy transport. Those
four booksthree of which are new to the industryare great references, he added.
There are also enough books written for crane
operators and riggers to fill a library. Im sure
Im skimming the surface of whats available, but
theres The Rigging Handbook, by Jerry Klinke
of ACRA Publishing. First published in 1995, its
now in its fourth edition with more than 450,000
copies in print. Bobs Rigging & Crane Handbook, by Don Pellow of Pellow Engineering has
been a staple in the crane and rigging industry for
many years. The Riggers Reference Handbook,
by Mike Riggs of the Rigging Institute, is considered to be a practical reference for the rigger and
crane operator.
Its pretty neat seeing whats happening in
our industry, with leading experts writing books.
The expertise they have to share will make the
industry a lot safer and set the standard, Yates
said of the texts he mentioned above, but what
could be said for every book referred to in this
column. Its a neat time to be a part of our industry as these guys share their expertise, he added.
I would wholeheartedly agree.
