I. Development of Slip Boundary Conditions Theory
A. Derivation of the Blasius Similarity Solution.
Flow over a at plate can be one of the simplest cases. Once we assume
dp
dx
= 0 and 2-D ow, the conservation
of momentum in x direction and the conservation of mass become:
u
u
x
+ v
u
y
=

2
u
y
2
(1)
u
x
+
v
y
= 0 (2)
The simplication of this problem can be obtained if we assume u and v as:
u = UF() (3)
v =

U
x
G() (4)
Where:
=
y

x
U

1. Conservation of Mass:
The conservation of mass can be expressed as follows:
u
x
+
v
y
= 0 (11)
Using the expressions above, the later expression is transformed to:

2
F

+
G

= 0 (12)
This expression will require to dene the function F in order to solve for G. Let us assume that F is by
denition the streamline, then:
F =
f

(13)
Where:
f = streamfunction (14)
Then:

dG

d =

f
d

d (15)
G =

2
df
d

2
df
d
d + C (16)
The constant obtained during the integration can be assumed to be zero since it will only aect the magnitude
of the stream function. Finally:
G =
1
2
(
df
d
f) (17)
Until this point, G and F are both functions of f, also there has not been made any substitution of slip

boundary conditions, so the slip condition have not inuenced the deduction of the similarity solution.
2. Conservation of Momentum
u
u
x
+ v
u
y
=

(18)
After substitution:
UF(
U
2x
F

) +

U
x
G()U

U

F

= U
U
X

(19)
We obtain the ODE:
G
dF
d

F
2
dF
d
=
d

F
d

(20)
Finally, replacing F and G:
d

f

f

= 0 (21)
II. Conclusion
So far, the similarity solution used by Martin

only use the assumption that the ow can be described by
equations (1) and (2) This mean that the equation (21) can be used for slightly rareed gas ow, however a
Maxwell slip condition is required.
