ALCATEL-LUCENT

1830 VERSATILE WDM MODULE

COMPACT WDM EXTENSION SHELF
DWDM, RELEASE 6.0

The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 Versatile WDM Module (VWM) is a compact, add-on shelf that extends
dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) to network elements without built-in WDM
capability. It is a managed platform that supports point-to-point and ring applications in metro
access, metro core, data center and enterprise networks. For operators challenged with meeting
growing and unpredictable bandwidth demands, the scalability and exibility of the 1830 VWM
accelerate time-to-revenue and reduce total cost of ownership.
The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 VWM for DWDM
applications is a 1RU shelf with two
slots for redundant controller cards, two
slots for DWDM modules or xed gain
amplier modules (separate for east and
west), and one slot for an optional fan
when the shelf is equipped with amplier
modules. The 1830 VWM complements
the Alcatel-Lucent 7210 Service Access
Switch (SAS) in business services, mobile
backhaul and triple-play applications. It
also enables a cost-effective xed optical
add/drop multiplexer (FOADM) solution for
data center, storage area network (SAN)
interconnect, and metro applications.
FEATURES
Up to eight DWDM wavelengths/channels
in a single line card slot, and up to 32
DWDM wavelengths/channels per system
(by cascading four 8-channel line cards),
in accordance with ITU-T G.692 grid,
100-GHz channel spacing in C-band.
DWDM channels are in the 192.0 THz to
196.0 THz range
Each 8-channel flter can add/drop
8channels. When using the four 8-channel
variants in a cascaded conguration, all
32channels can be added and dropped.
Client signals are supported at any bit
rate (100 Mb/s to 10 Gb/s)
Multiple confgurations and multiple
network architectures. The 1830 VWM
can be congured as a line terminal and
an optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM),
either passive or amplied. These basic
congurations cover both point-to-point
and ring network applications
Integral equipment controller that manages
the lter units and communication with
the master network element (NE), including
inventory information. This provides
common management and control when
used with Alcatel-Lucent 7210 SAS
solutions
Up to eight 1830 VWM extension shelves
can be cascaded, depending on the
conguration type
The 1830 VWM supports 1+1 Equipment
Protection Switching (1+1 EPS) for the
equipment controller units (and internal
links)
BENEFITS
Enables network operators to cost-
effectively and quickly meet uctuating
bandwidth demands
Reduces operating expenditures with
passive power and a small footprint
Maximizes revenue opportunities with
support for a wide range of services and
congurations
Enables simplifed, cost-effective
operations and deployment with a
common management/control solution
Reduces capital expenditures by
optimizing ber utilization
