Evaluation of the unit of inquiry

Here are some of the activities we have done so far:

• Media – brainstorming
• KWL chart (writing what we knew and what we wanted to know)
• Media timeline (reading and discussing about media in time)
• Media -user-friendly chart (identifying media sources and how accessible they are)
• Media –questionnaire followed by making graph bar
• Reading and comparing points of view (e.g. “Humpty Dumpty- A bad accident” vs. “Humpty Dumpty –He
was pushed!”
• Writing news articles (“Storyland”, “Herb, the Verb”, “Be the Reporter!” etc.)
• Media facts (reading and discussing)
• Media codes
• Bias
- image bias (deconstructing images to see how they affect message - e.g. “Now You See It, Now You Don’t”)
- word choice bias (writing headlines and captions based on a given event or picture to see how balanced or
biased an article/headline can be)
Matching pictures with appropriate headlines or articles
Stereotyping
- role-play (teacher, villain, grandparents; boys vs. girls)
- comparison : TV Kid vs. Myself
