HEAT TRANSFER II
(MECH 452/4 X WINTER 06)

Instructor: Dr. Wahid S. Ghaly
Room EV 4-151, Tel.: 848-2424x4191, Fax 3175
e-mail: ghaly@encs.concordia.ca

Office Hours: Tuesdays 4:15 to 6:15 PM
or by appointment

Lecture: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:45 to 4:00 PM in LS-424
Laboratory: Every other week in H 0027-3, Labs will start with Week 2 on J an. 16
th
, 2006
Lab. Instructor: Mr., Mohammad Shahsavari, emai: rz_shahsavari@yahoo.com

Course Description:
Heat exchangers. Condensation and boiling heat transfer. Principles of forced convection.
Analysis of free convection from a vertical wall. Correlations for free convection in enclosed
spaces. Mass transfer. Special topics of heat transfer.
Prerequisites: MECH 352 & MECH 361

Course Aim:
This course is aimed at complementing MECH 352 with further aspects of convective Heat
Transfer and introducing the student to some applications of convection heat transfer. It is also
aimed at providing the students with a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that govern
convection heat transfer processes. Heat-Mass transfer analogy in then used to introduce the
student to convective mass transfer processes. After passing this course, the student should be
able to address most engineering problems in Heat Transfer.

Grading Scheme: (tentative)
Laboratory 15%
Project 10% (will be assigned on 26/01/06 and will be due on 23/03/06)
Quizes (3) 30% (tentative dates are 02/02/06, 02/03/06, and 30/03/06)
Final Exam 45% (during final exams period)

The passing grade is 50% overall average and 50% in the Final Exam.

General notes:
Course Notes: Course notes will be available in the copy center, additional smaller packs
may be added during the term and students will be periodically informed in class
Assignments: A list including all the assignments is included, it is imperative to solve the
assignments although it will not be collected nor corrected. The solutions will be available
to students in due time.
The assignments grade will be based on three quizes that will be given in class:
Quiz I: Thursday Feb. 2
nd
, will tentatively cover Heat exchangers
Quiz II: Thursday March 2
nd
, will tentatively cover Condensation and Boiling HT, and part
of forced convection HT
Quiz III: Thursday March 30
th
, will tentatively cover the rest of the course
Labs will start with week 2 on the week of J an. 16
th
. A lab. Manual is available in the
bookstore. The students are urged to read carefully each experiment before performing it in
the lab. The students have to get the lab. Instructor's signature on their data sheet. The lab.
reports have to be handed-in at the following lab. (i.e. two weeks later), they will be
corrected and returned at the following lab. (in two more weeks). Every lab. Report has to
be sarted with the Expectation of Originality Form, you can find it at:
www.encs.concordia.ca/scs/Forms/expectations.pdf
Absence: If you miss a lecture, make sure you get informed from a friend or colleague of the
material given in that lecture. If you miss a lab. for a valid reason, organize with the Lab.
Instructor for a make-up lab.
Grade review: Students wishing to review their final grade, for a valid reason, can do so in
the second week of the winter term. A sign-up sheet will be posted on my door during the
first week of the winter term for those who wish to review their grade.
