METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the conceptual framework, research design, time and location
of the study, population and respondents of the study, instrumentation, data gathering
procedure and statistical method.

Theoretical Framework
The everyday notion of attitude refers to someones basic liking or disliking of a
familiar target. A general overview of the development of attitudes throughout school
year is documented through surveys and meta-analysis. These study have shown that, for
example, girl tend to have more negative attitudes towards Filipino that attitudes tend to
become more negative as pupils more from elementary to secondary school (McLeod).
Attitude is when the students like or dislike the subject. Many methods such as
mate-analysis or through surveys can overview their performance in Filipino. In this
study, researcher will attempt to describe the relationship between the independent
variable. The independent variables include the students profile and students attitude
profile while the dependents variables include the academic performance.
Research on attitudes, as a factor related to students difficulties in Mathematics,
and particularly in solving problems, dates from the 1960s. Recently, many connected
concepts have been studied, such as conceptions and beliefs of Mathematics and its
learning, motivation and self-regulation, self-concept, self-esteem and self-efficacy.
The general tenet is that human beings are not only cognitive individuals, but also
social persons with beliefs, emotions and views that influence their development as
learners. Actually, a persons behavior and choices, when confronted with a task, are
determined more by her/his beliefs and personal theories, rather than by her/his
knowledge of the specifics of the task.
Literature refers to attitude as a learned predisposition or tendency of an
individual to respond positively or negatively to some object, situation, concept or
another person. This positive or negative feeling is of moderate intensity and reasonable
stability; sometimes it is especially resistant to change.
Attitude towards mathematics plays a crucial role in the teaching and learning
processes of mathematics. It effects students achievement in mathematics. The teaching
method, the support of the structure of the school, the family and students attitude
towards school affect the attitudes towards mathematics. Usually, the way that
mathematics is represented in the classroom and perceived by students, even when
teachers believe they are presenting it in authentic and context dependent way stands to
alienate many students from mathematics (Barton, 2000; Furinghetti and Pekhonen,
2002).
Researchers concluded that positive attitude towards mathematics leads students
towards success in mathematics. Attempt to improve attitude towards mathematics at
lower level provides base for higher studies in mathematics. It also causes effect in
achievement of mathematics at secondary school level (Ma and Xu, 2004).
Regardless of the relationship between attitudes and achievement, teachers and
Mathematics educators tend to believe that children learn more effectively when they are
interested in what they learn and they achieve better if they like what they learn (Ma &
Kishor, 1997). Thus, students who come to enjoy Mathematics, increase their intrinsic
motivation to learn, and vice-versa. It is obvious, therefore, that continual attention
should be directed towards creating, developing and reinforcing positive attitudes
towards any subject of the curriculum (Pintrich, 1999; Middleton & Spanias, 1999).
Nevertheless, attitudes are relatively stable and one should not expect noteworthy
changes to occur over a short period of time.

Operational Definition of Term
Socio Demographic Characteristics- refers to the personal data of the respondents.
Age- refers to the age of the respondents.
Gender- refers to the age of the respondents, either male or female.
Parent`s Educational Attainment- is the highest educational attainment of the
parents of respondents.
Family Income- refers to the monthly income of the parents.
Attitude -
Social Factors- refer to the factor that affects the attitude of the respondents at home.
Home Factors- refers to the factor that affects the attitude of the respondents at the
school.
Senior Students- they are the fourth year high school.
Research Design
The descriptive research will be used in this study. Through this technique the data
regarding to students are gathered tabulated, analyzed and interpreted. This will also
employ correlational design as it will describe the relationship between dependent and
independent variable.

Sampling Procedure
The respondents of this study will be the senior students of University
Laboratory High School (ULHS) Pinili. The researchers considered the whole population
of ULHS-Palusapis. Names of the respondents were asked from the registrar of the
ULHS- Pinili.

Locale and Population of the Study
This study will be conducted in ULHS- Pinili. It will be conduct during the first
semester of the school year 2014-2015. The populations of this study are consisted of 50
senior students of ULHS-Pinili.

Instrumentation
This study use questioner divided into two parts. Part one comprises the students
profiles of the respondents in term of age, gender, parents education, attainment, parents
occupation and grade in Filipino. Part two constituted statement pertaining to the
personal attitude profile in Filipino of the respondents.

Data Gathering Procedure
Before the researcher began collecting data from the respondents, approval was first
sought from the advisers of the University High School- Pinili asking for their assistance
regarding this study.
The respondents first term grades in Filipino were retrieved from the registrar of
University High School- Pinili. To identify the students learning styles and some socio-
demographic profiles, a questionnaire was prepare which include the Grasha Reichman
Learning Style Inventory.

Data Gathering Instrument
The researchers conducted step by step procedure in gathering information about
the factors affecting the Behavioral Traits of Senior Student of University Laboratory
School- Pinili at Barangay Pinili, San Jose City, Nueva Ecija.
The researcher will give a questionnaire to the respondents to know their own
perception about factor affecting their Attitude.

Students permanent record
The student permanent record is an official document which contains information
regarding the student academic performance during the school year. To authenticate the
grades indicates by the respondents in the survey questioning the researcher requested the
transcript of record from the register of ULHS-PINILI the final grade in Filipino was use
as a measure of the respondents academic performance.

Statistical Analysis
Appropriate statistical tools will be used in this study. Descriptive statistical such
as percentage, mean and frequency counts will be used in this descriptive part. The data
that collected are classified, categorized and analyzed in accordance with the objectives
of the study. This research also used person r to show the relationship between the senior
SDC and their attitudes towards their Filipino class.
