With autumn just a few short weeks away, many people will
soon spend less time on the patio and more time within four
walls. Actually, ve walls if you include the ceiling.
Many homeowners dont consider ceilings part of their
interior design, and it shows. Most are expanses of bland white
paint. But savvy do-it-yourselfers are converting these blank
canvases into interesting and functional design elements that
can accent a rooms decor, create a cozier space or disguise
problems commonly found on this fth wall.
The best news: Updating a ceiling is one of the easiest and
budget-friendly ways to freshen a space. All the recent attention
on ceilings - from both professional designers and DIY-ers - has
prompted the creation of new products and project ideas.
Dana Vento, DIY expert and popular home renovation
blogger, recommends tackling a ceiling project that can be
quickly and easily nished over the weekend. Here are her tips
to boost your homes value while achieving DIY gratication
this fall:
Warm up with wood. Theres a reason wood ooring is so
popular - it tends to warm up a room and add character. The
same goes for ceilings. Real or engineered wood panels can
extend your sense of style in any room. Thats because they
come in a wide range of tones, textures and patterns to suit any
decorating style, from rustic to mid-century modern to sleek
contemporary.
Go beyond plain vanilla. For those who want to add a
splash of color, the ceiling holds special allure. Painting the
ceiling the same color as the walls (or one shade lighter) can
make a small room feel larger. A bright color, say yellow or
pink, could enliven a childs room, while a sky blue ceiling
creates a more soothing ambiance. Black ceilings have their
own design advantages, dramatically dening a dining area in
an open oor plan, for instance, or enhancing the enveloping
atmosphere of a home theater.
Love the look of metals? Add some character and
shimmer to your ceiling. Consider todays pressed metal ceiling
tiles. Theyre far easier to install than their antique ancestors,
and the light-bouncing properties of copper, brass and
lacquered steel can help raise the ceiling visually in any room.
Hide the popcorn. Even condent DIY-ers dont relish the
idea of scrapping popcorn ceilings to remove the material and
then deal with the messy cleanup. But now theres an easier and
more attractive x, Vento says.
We took the plunge and installed an Armstrong Woodhaven
plank ceiling, which can be applied directly over the popcorn,
she says. Like wood, Woodhaven planks come in different
nishes, and can also be painted.
Vento recommends homeowners start thinking about their
ceiling by exploring websites and local businesses for ideas.

For homeowners who experience cold winters, the
warmth and crackle of a replace can be a wonderful
addition to a home. But when a typical homeowner pictures
a replace, they will usually imagine a wood-burning or
natural gas-burning replace. However, there is a third
option: an electronic replace. Although less common,
electric replaces are often safer, greener, less expensive to
operate and more stylish than other options.
Unlike a wood or natural gas replace, an electronic
replace does not actually produce a ame. The illusory
ames are simply light refracted in a random, three-
dimensional pattern. As for the heat, think of it like a
toaster. It has a coil that heats up. The heat simply radiates
out, or it can have a blower attached to it like a fan behind
a toaster, says Bobby Renner, chief building scientist for
Americas Best Energy Team. Wilfred Weihe, a contributor
to ElectricFireplaceHeater.org, says an electric replace
doesnt give off enough heat to warm an entire house, but
it generates enough heat to warm a 400 square-foot room.
Because nothing burns, electronic replaces are
considered safer than wood or gas replaces. The lack of a
ame also means that there are no ying embers. There are
no exposed hot surfaces to cause accidental burns. Materials
are usually cool to the touch. There are no chimneys that
need to be cleaned or regular maintenance of any kind,
Weihe says. And Renner adds, Without combustion, theres
no worry about carbon monoxide or anything like that.
And because there are no gases or toxins released,
electronic replaces are greener than wood or gas options.
Weihe notes, There is no buildup of sulfur, nitrogen oxides,
formaldehyde or other toxins that can cause wheezing,
asthma or bronchitis. Electronic replaces are also the most
energy efcient. Weihe continues, With coils producing
heat via electricity, and fans or blowers distributing the
warmth, all energy is fully used. None is wasted.
That energy efciency leads to another benet:
Electronic replaces are inexpensive to buy, install, and
use, Renner says. Weihe adds, You can nd an electric
replace to t just about any budget. Some cost as little as
$200. An electronic model will be the easiest and cheapest
to install, because all it requires is a power source. A wood
replace will require a chimney, and a gas replace will
require a gas line. Renner compares the operating costs of
the various models: Electronic replaces cost about ve to
ten cents an hour to operate, whereas a natural gas replace
costs about twenty cents an hour, and a wood replace
will require wood, time to chop and so on. Regarding
maintenance costs, Weihe says, Replacement parts are also
less expensive for an electric replace, and repairs are easy.
Finally, electric replaces can also meet just about any
style. Weihe says, They come in various sizes, materials,
styles, colors and wattage. They are versatile and can t any
area of any room in any style or size home. Renner echoes
this sentiment, saying, I think people will be surprised by
the different electric replaces available.
However, electric replaces do have their drawbacks. For
some people, the lack of a real ame is a deal breaker. Others do
not like electric replaces smaller size because they tend not
to give off as much heat as a wood or gas replace. Similarly,
unlike a wood or gas replace, electric replaces will not
work if a winter storm knocks out the power, Weihe notes.
Another common complaint Weihe hears is that although an
electric replace does not get as hot as other types of replace,
some electric models have a rebox or blower low to the
ground, requiring installation away from carpet, drapes or
other ammable materials. Renner also notes, When wood
or gas burn, it releases moisture, but straight electrical heat is
just heat. It wont create any moisture, so an electric replace
can dry out a room.
Like most interior design decisions, it often comes down
to a balance of cost, style and personal preferences. For
homeowners who are looking for a safe, low-cost, energy-
efcient alternative to a wood or gas replace, odds are they
can nd an electric model that strikes that right balance.

You may not need to replace those kitchen or bathroom
cabinets, nor the built-ins in your living room or den. All it
takes to create the look of newness and perhaps eliminate
that outdated light color of your cabinets is staining those
wood structures, drawers and doors.
When you start looking at stain colors, its easy to get
overwhelmed. The hues are just so lovely, and some seem
so similar in tone, that you may nd yourself stumped to
such a degree that you cant even decide between light and
dark wood stain.
To help you choose a stain color for your cabinetry, here
are some tips to keep in mind:
Test colors against your existing hardwood oor col-
or. The shade of your cabinet stain shouldnt match exactly.
You need some color contrast to allow the beautiful nish of
your cabinets to stand out. A coordinating shade is ideal. Its
a common error among home remodelers to forget to place
stain color samples against their existing ooring and even
ceiling colors.
Think about how light, medium and dark stains per-
form with your rooms theme and style. Lighter stains can,
of course, brighten casual spaces and go well with a coun-
try-themed room. Medium stains such as chestnut suit more
traditional decor in your rooms design, adding richness and
warmth while easily complementing many different types
of wood in your home. And medium stains can extend be-
yond wood colors to exotic hues such as pink and green for
a more whimsical or even spa-inspired color design. Dark
stains such as ebony and mahogany create a rich, stylish look
for a room, complementing modern interiors. Dark stain is
a top trend now, complementing non-wood pieces such as a
clawfoot tub or pedestal sinks whose colors pop alongside
darker custom cabinetry.
Consider your wood species. According to the
experts at The Furniture Guild, the species of wood you se-
lected for your ... custom cabinetry will greatly affect your
selection of wood stain color. Oak is considered the easiest
wood to stain and gives you the greatest amount of color op-
tions. Cabinetry (and wood ooring) made of maple, birch
and coniferous wood such as pine or r are difcult to stain
evenly and look best when left in their natural hues.

Its a factor to consider, since some of these woods come
in a more limited number of shades. Talk to your paint store
expert to get helpful lessons in different woods grain sizes
and pores to understand better what goes into your staining
process and color choice.
Explore classic and exotic wood stains. For in-
stance, basic wood stain colors may be oak or pine, and
youll also nd exotic wood stain colors such as black forest
bamboo, caramel bamboo, ebony, rosewood, wenge and a
striped effect called zebrawood, among other shades suit-
able for different wood types.
Think about lighting and trafc. Lighter-colored
stains will generally show the woods knots and whorls,
and any dust or pet hairs on your cabinetry wont be as vis-
ible as they would on darker stain. Even scratches on your
cabinets can be less evident. Darker stains will camouage
woods natural imperfections or make knots less visible, but
scratches, dust and pet hair will be more visible.
Complement the other wood tones and design
details in your home. If you already have wood furniture in
the room, youll want to select a wood stain color that com-
plements your existing piece. Keep in mind that the wood
ooring leading from your bedroom or hallway and leading
into your bathroom will play a big role in helping you select
your cabinetry wood stain colors, so that the shades and
tones leading into your bathroom create a beautiful ow of
hues and wood details.
Decide between water-based and oil-based color
stains. The experts at DIY Network say, There are several
advantages to using water-based color stains. For one thing,
they offer a range and intensity of colors that oil-based stains
cant begin to offer. For another, they can be used without
the need for ventilation, since they produce no dangerous
fumes, and cleanup is simple -- just soap and water.
The DIY Network experts say, Stains add color but dont
protect wood, so some type of sealant must be used. Dont
use polyurethane, though: It always adds a slight yellow
tint. Instead, use a water-based nish, which can be applied
with either a brush or an aerosol spray.
To help you get started considering wood nishes for your
custom bathroom remodel, review the Furniture Guilds
helpful chart: http://thefurnitureguild.com/#nishes. Or
visit your favorite paint retailers website to view their stain
color charts, which may be interactive on their site to try
out wood stain shades on a photo of your room.

How often do you redeco-
rate your home? A survey by
retailer HomeGoods found
that 47 percent of Americans
havent redecorated in the
past ve years, with 9 percent
saying its been over 10 years
since they made decor chang-

If youre ready for a decor
refresher, changing your wall
hangings is a good place to
start. For a small investment,
you can make stylish updates
to your home.
Creating Interest
and Impact
Wall decor is one of the in-
tegral layers in every space,
says HGTV star and interior
designer Genevieve Gorder.
Wall decor can range from
framed photography to mir-
rors to window treatments.
Its one of the last pieces that
go into a space, but whole
rooms can be centered and
worked off it, if done correctly,
says the host of Genevieves Renova-
tion.
Wall hangings may be the nishing
touches to a room, but they have big
impact.
It makes the space cozy, inviting
and more interesting than staring at
blank walls, says Suchitra Parikh-
Crandall, owner and creative director
?for childrens brand Monkie Birdie.
Gallery Walls
One of hottest looks in wall decor is
creating a gallery wall. They are easy to
design and can be changed as often as
homeowners want.
Whether you choose art, frames or
mirrors, a gallery wall instantly adds
visual interest and depth to a room,
says designer Kerra Michele, founder
of the interior and event design com-
pany Apartment Envy. She thinks gal-
lery walls, which can be large or small,
are a t for people who dont want to
paint or use wallpaper.
With a gallery wall, all you need
is a hammer, some nails and a cou-
ple hours of your time to completely
transform your space, she says, not-
ing it personalizes the space, which is
a big plus for renters looking for ways
to make their borrowed space feel
more like home.

Decals
Wall decals are also trendy for
kids and grown-ups, too. The decals,
available in vinyl and Photo Tex fabric,
are available in a variety of styles and
colors and can be changed out as often
as needed.
Although most vinyl decals are
removable, they are, in most cases, not
re-stickable, says Parikh-Crandall.
Fabric decals can be removed and
reapplied to the walls more than a
few dozen times, making it perfect for
families on the move or for rentals.
Creating a Feel
Wall hangings help dene a room
and separate spaces, too for example,
designating a sitting area in a family room
r a small ofce in the corner of a kitchen.
Where you want to guide people to go
and what you want them to do in a space,
the wall decor is a director of that, says
Gorder, whos partnering with solar
service company Sunrun to talk about
the must-haves in designing a smart,
stylish home, including home solar.
Creating contrast in the room can
maximize the effect of your wall
hangings. Cool shades and low contrast
can be calming almost spa-like says
Parikh-Crandall, who says high-contrast
wall decor can make a space vibrant.
Be conscientious about the size of
wall hangings, too.
A huge piece of art in a small room
can overwhelm and intimidate, says
Parikh-Crandall, whereas a tiny art
piece on a big wall would barely make
a difference.
Personalization
The easiest wall hangings to change
are pieces that are stand-alone, such as
a mirror in a hallway or a frame at the
top of the stairs.
Established collections for example,
a series of plates hung on a wall are
most likely to remain unchanged
because its a larger job to redecorate.
Still, wall hangings can be a very
personal thing.
I tend to decorate with things that
are sentimental, an old ticket stub in
a frame, says Gorder, whose walls at
home are decorated with a shadow box
featuring her grandmothers satchel
and vintage maps from schools.
Everything you put on the wall
becomes a little precious once its
there, says Gorder. Its meaningful if
you have it on the wall.
Affordability
You dont have to spend a lot of
money to have new wall decor.
Wall hangings are an accessory,
says Gorder. Sometimes the pieces
that are the least expensive are the
most powerful.
Gallery walls, for example, t any
budget, says Michele, noting you can
go pricey using original artwork in
custom frames on the wall or budget-
friendly decorating the wall with ea
market nds and Ikea frames to create
your unique look.
Parikh-Crandall estimates that prices
for art prints and wall decals can range
from under $15 to up to $100.

CADILLAC - Three years ago John McKay was a guy who
mowed his lawn and enjoyed a backyard barbecue.
But things have changed at the McKay house up in the 700
block of Gareld Street. The backyard is almost completely
lled with vegetable gardens, low tunnels, high tunnels plus
a green house.
His shing boat now sits in a back corner by his tool shed.
What happened?
Three years ago I read a question on Facebook that I
couldnt get out of my mind, admitted local realtor McKay.
The question was: Are organic vegetables better for you
than traditionally grown produce?
The research began. McKay discovered that foods organi-
cally grown have mineral based herbicides and pesticides,
while synthetic chemicals are used in other produce.

He decided to start a little garden in his back
yard to grow chemical-free vegetables. Next, he
enrolled in a beginning gardening class offered
by the Wexford Conservation District. Then, he
tested his backyard soil with a home kit.
I found out the nutrients in my backyard soil
were virtually zero, he laughed.
By attending meetings with fellow gardeners
in a group called Transition Cadillac, he learned
how to build up his soil. He started three compost
piles in this back yard and built up his soil by
using Dairy Doo. When he had the soil retested
through the Michigan State University Extension
ofce in Wexford County, he found everything
was great. The nutrients looked good so now its
just a matter of continuing to add compost over
the next two and three years.

Theres nothing better that coming home from

Its relaxing for one thing. Now its a passion.

Being involved in backyard organic gardening is a constant
learning experience, and he enjoys seeing his crop become
healthier every year as he learns more.
I have been surprised by how many backyard gardeners
there are, but with fuel at $4 a gallon, it makes organics com-
petitive with traditional growing. If you want to make real
change in the world, spend your money locally.
John and Laurie supplement their garden produce by
shopping at the local farmers market and in grocery stores.
Were like everybody else, he said. We still enjoy a pizza

ier to both of us and we notice the difference. There are no
pesticides or chemicals in our soil or in our plants. I havent
used a chemical in three years.

During the fall and winter holiday season, your dining room
will be an important gathering place for dinners, brunches
and cocktail parties. The dining room has experienced an evo-
lution in remodeling popularity lately, thanks to breathtaking
design projects shown on popular home decorating website
Houzz, as well as Pinterest. No matter how large your dining
room, you can give it a makeover. Here are the top trends in
dining room remodeling projects:
1) Add interesting lighting. Julia Buckingham Edel-
mann of Buckingham Interiors + Design says, A chic dining
room is no longer dened by an opulent crystal chandelier;
instead make a statement with a one-of-a-kind piece. Ex-
amples include a trio of pendant lamps, a rustic wood round
holding frosted glass lights or a rainfall-like effect of crystals
surrounding lights. Unique lighting allows you to put your
thinking-outside-the-box skills to work and serve as a con-
versation-starting focal point. Guests will appreciate your use
of the unexpected to light their meal. Add your new choice
of lighting xture above the dining room table. With portrait
lights on the walls, and perhaps uplighting placed behind pot-
ted trees, the easy task of installing a dimmer switch will give
you the option of different light intensity whenever you wish.
2) Choose a new paint palette. Jeanine Hays, an
AphroChic design blogger says, Move over white walls; in
2014 well be seeing rooms with a lot more drama and glam-
our. Dining room walls might nally get a makeover from
their boring beige hue to stand out in deep navy blue, which
style blogger Mark D. Sikes says is a big trend for 2014. Im
seeing a lot of the shade on the runways, on the streets, in chic
interiors. While navy blue can sometimes look a bit country,
gleaming metal xtures and accessories (also a big trend) cre-
ate more of a formal, modern and stylish look. Other popular
shades for dining rooms include cranberry and eggplant for
warmer tones, and, if youd still prefer a neutral shade, slate
gray and chocolate brown are topping the trends.
3) Chair rails and molding. Adding new chair rails
and molding to the dining room adds an upscale nishing
touch to the room, and may hide those less-than-perfect paint
lines where the ceiling meets the wall. A chair rail also invites
the trend of having one paint color above the rail and another
color or wide paint color stripes below for creative air. If
youre doing the project yourself, buy extra lengths of wood
to allow for some inevitable miscuts and wood splits. Its bet-
ter to have extra than to have to go back to the lumber store.
Hungry For Home Improvement
Five dining room remodel trends
4) Knock out a wall. According to Realtor Magazines
recent Cost vs. Value Report, the average return on invest-
ment for home remodel projects is 66.1 percent, and creating
an open oor plan is one of the most requested features by
new homebuyers. Even if you wont put your house on the
market any time soon, you may still want that open, airy ar-
rangement.
5) Refresh with trendy furniture and accesso-
ries. Dining rooms have gotten more eclectic, which means
youre not limited to the all-matching dining room chairs.
Now a trend is to mix up chairs and benches or alternate chair
fabrics and print patterns, place grander chairs at the heads of
the table, and more creative pairings. A big trend is the rustic
look, placing a rough-hewn wood table at the center of the
room for a relaxed vibe in an otherwise formal dining room,
creating an inviting gathering place. Alternatively, to add some
glam styling to your dining room, think mirrors. Not just mir-
rors hung on the walls although an oversize, ornate mirror
instantly adds opulence to your dining room but mirrored
buffets or sideboards add drama to the room, especially when
you place silver accessories such as candelabras and art pieces
minimally on your dining room furniture. Supersize artwork
is also a trend, and home stylists say that large artwork may be
hung on the walls or even leaned against a wall.

Wallpaper can be an efcient and effective way to spruce
up a house without taking up any room. Wall coverings
have been around for hundreds of years, but admiration
waxes and wanes with each decade. It seems that consis-
tent popularity depends on regional housing styles. In the
more traditional East, South and Midwest, classic homes
have been more conducive to the application of paper than
contemporary or Santa Fe-style homes. Other types of wall
treatments have gained a foothold out West; treatments
such as Venetian plaster, faux and decorative nishes. I have
witnessed these phases with curiosity.
Back in the 1970s when I started my design career, Mylar
patterns were hot. These included shiny geometric patterns
that were printed in silver, gold and copper metallic paint.
Papers were bold and intended to deliver a big punch! Of-
ten just one wall received these strong designs -- that was
all that a room could stand. We used papers like this in
commercial situations and also in homes. It was also an era
when photographic murals were considered the rage and
replaced the paper landscape murals of the 1930s or 1940s.
As far back as colonial days, ne homes featured tradi-
tional scenic wallpaper in a stairwell, foyer or dining room.
These might depict a Chinese scene with people, landscape
and animals or a classic French toile pattern. Today, you can
still nd examples in historic colonial homes up and down
the East Coast and into the South. England and France were
the main producers of enormous panorama papers towards
the end of the 18th century. Britain eventually emerged as
the king of wallpaper production, and multiple patterns are
still popular in contemporary English design. Pattern on
pattern especially is used in a way not often seen in the U.S.
market.

As wallpaper is printed with current color schemes,
the material might become dated more quickly. Wallpaper
books stay in print for several years at a time, but you could
nd it difcult to replace a paper originally printed 25 years
ago. It may become necessary to change your entire color
scheme or select a neutral pattern instead if you dont want
to change upholstery.
Nevertheless, after weighing the enormous impact of
a wall or two decorated with a dynamic wallpaper pattern
against the blandness of a simple coat of paint, one easily
can be convinced of the value. Good places for accent wall-
paper are powder bathrooms, foyers, staircase walls, dining
room walls and bedrooms. In this vibrant example of use,
a key wall in the home is adorned with a pattern. Consider
how the entire color scheme of adjacent rooms might be
pulled from the oral paper hung on an entry wall. In the
pattern you will nd colors for drapery fabric, upholstery
colors and art accents.
Often a pattern is available in several ways. There is typi-
cally a story or a series of companion-like patterns that go
together. In general, reserve larger pattern repeats for larg-
er areas and use the undersized pattern repeats in smaller
rooms. Additionally, a pattern might be printed on different
backgrounds. If you seek out a design that is printed on
white or off-white, it can be easier to blend into an existing
color scheme. Know, however, that you need a skilled in-
staller when you hang paper with a white background. The
seams show more when the background is pure white. Pat-
terns printed on tan or a colored ground are more forgiving.

Warm weather, continued care and robust plants have
yielded a bounty of beautiful, fresh vegetables - and person-
al satisfaction - from your garden this season. As the weath-
er cools and fall approaches, it is not time to hang up your
hat, gloves and trowel for the year. Autumn provides opti-
mum weather and ample opportunity to keep growing and
harvesting delicious, healthy produce well into the season.
Some gardeners assume that when fall arrives and kids
return to school, theyll have less time to garden, and may
experience less success from their garden plots. But cooler
temperatures and fall conditions can actually make garden-
ing easier and more enjoyable. Many of falls best-producing
vegetables are also colorful, making them great additions to
ower beds and containers.
If you loved summer gardening, you can keep your gar-
den growing right through fall. Heres how to make the most
of fall season gardening:
Size up the soil
Most vegetable plants require full sun for six or more
hours a day, and because fall provides a bit less sunlight
than summer, you may need to relocate your plot to make
the most of shorter days. If moving your garden isnt an op-
tion, you can still take full advantage of sunshine by plant-
ing veggies in containers or by creating a raised bed in a
sunny spot.
If youll be reusing your summer garden plot, remove
any leftover debris. Dont forget to pull up weeds before
they go to seed. Fluff any compacted soil with a garden fork.
Next, test the soil to see if any amendments are needed.
Even if your soil is in good shape, adding a 2-inch layer of
bagged compost or a balanced, natural fertilizer like Bonnie
Plant Food can give plants a boost.
Be prepared for frost. Keep materials on hand to protect
plants when frost threatens, such as oating row cover, a
cold frame or a cloche. On frosty, cold nights, move con-
tainer plants to a protected spot. Not sure when frost will
arrive in your area? Check out the USDA frost map on the
Bonnie Plants website.
Pick your plants
While crops like strawberries and tomatoes have faded
to sweet summer memories, many plants thrive in fall. To
ensure a successful harvest, its important to pick the right
plants and give yourself a jump start by using transplants,
rather than starting off with seeds. Planting six-week-old
transplants ensures youll have the best opportunity to take
advantage of falls shorter season, and youll harvest sooner
than if you plant from seed.
Producers like Bonnie Plants provide garden retailers
with transplants intended to grow well during the specic
growing season and are suited for your geographic region.
Seasonally appropriate transplants ensure youll have great-
er success in your garden. An added bonus of fall planting is
that many cool crops are also packed with nutrition and are
among the healthiest vegetables you can eat.

Bonnie favorites for fall include:
Broccoli - This versatile veg-
gie is packed with vitamins K, C and
A, and is a good source of folate.
Cabbage - A staple of Oktober-
fest celebrations across the country,
cabbage comes in several varieties,
all of which are high in beta-caro-
tene, vitamins C and K and ber.
Kale - Some varieties of kale, like
Winterbor Kale, actually taste bet-
ter when kissed by frost. A prolic
producer, kale thrives in fall gardens
and is a good source of vitamins A,
C, K and B6, as well as manganese.
Leeks - Prized by gourmets for
their milder avor, leeks are frost-
tolerant in all but the coldest plant-
ing zones. The health benets of all
onions are well documented, and
leeks also add a pop of bright color
to culinary dishes.
Spinach - This nutrient-rich
green does as well in falls cooler
temperatures as it does in summer
heat. Spinach will continue to pro-
duce throughout the season, provid-
ing a tasty source of vitamins A, C, K
and E, as well as the minerals iron,
potassium and magnesium.
The end of summer doesnt have
to herald the end of your garden
harvest and enjoyment, or a return
to the grocery store produce aisle.
With the right fall crops, you can
achieve a satisfying, healthful har-
vest throughout the fall. Visit www.

(BPT) - Theres no better
time than now to give
your home the attention
it deserves. Give it an
annual checkup before cold
weather arrives to help add
comfort, save energy and
cut home maintenance in
the long-run.
When inspecting your
homes windows and doors,
heres what to check:
Inspect interior and
exterior fnishes: Over
time, paint and stain can
weather away. Flaking or
peeling may mean that its
time to renish or replace
the unit. When replacing
windows or doors, consider
factory prenished wood
or berglass options from
Pella, or vinyl options that
dont need painting or
staining, to save time and
money.
Look for damaged exterior
surfaces or signs of
leaks: Check your sprinkler system to
make sure its watering your lawn and
landscape, not soaking your windows
or doors. Cracked or deteriorated wood
may be a sign of water penetration.
Leaks can linger and affect interior
walls, oors or ceilings, so look closely
for discoloration or other moisture
signs.
If you spot a problem, track its trail.
For example, discolored trim around
a window might actually be caused by
moisture entering a ways away. With a
leaky roof, water may run down inside
the wall and appear at the window.
Contact a professional for help in
making home repairs.
Clear windowsills and tracks of dirt and
debris: Sand, leaves, insects or pine
needles stuck in weather-stripping can
affect the performance of your windows
and doors. Open the windows and clean
the opening with a soft brush, like a dry
paint brush or vacuum attachment. Do
the same for sliding patio doors.
Try opening and closing: Open your
windows and doors to make sure
moving parts work, and units close
properly. Replace worn or broken parts.
Inspect weather-stripping:
Re-attach loose weather-
stripping around windows
or doors, and replace
material thats ripped or
torn.
Replace or repair broken
locks: If locks feel loose or
dont work smoothly, replace
them. Keep windows and
doors locked when not in
use. Locks help hold doors
and windows tightly, to lock
out rain, wind, snow and
insects.
Inspect weep and breather
holes: Weep holes in the
exterior of windows, allow
excess moisture to escape,
while breather holes allow
air exchange within certain
components. Clear blocked
holes of dirt or debris with a
wire or toothpick.
Check exterior sealants
and caulk on and around
windows and doors. Pay
attention to areas susceptible
to rain, water and extreme
sunlight. Remove damaged material
and reapply sealant.
Feel for signs of air leakage around the
window or door: Improperly installed
windows or doors can be drafty,
decrease energy efciency, and allow
unwanted moisture into your home. To
help save on utility bills and keep your
home more comfortable year-round,
replace drafty old, leaky windows with
new, ENERGY STAR-qualied windows
installed properly.

Tips on how to give your home an
ANNUAL CHECKUP
Friday, August 29. 2014 | www.cadillacnews.com Cadillac News - YOUR HOME - ISSUE 3 23
Mark J. Donovan
When the leaves have turned color and are beginning to
fall off the trees, it is time to prepare your garden to ensure
a healthy yard next year.
Start winterizing your garden by removing the dead plant
remnants from this years garden. Dig up all of the plants, in-
cluding their root systems and either remove them entirely
or pile them on top of the garden.
Ideally, it is best to remove them and to put them in a
compost pile. Leaving old crop debris creates a haven for
rodents and insects. Also, if the plants are diseased, it is im-
portant to remove them from the garden to prevent next
years garden from becoming infected as well.
If you decide to leave the plant remnants in the garden,
dry them out and till them into the soil in late fall or early
spring with some of the fallen leaves from your trees. By till-
ing the fallen leaves into the soil in the fall, your yard will
absorb some nutrients. Leaving them on top of the garden
and waiting until spring to till them in retards the absorp-
tion of the nutrients and delays the warming of the garden
soil in the spring.
Do not put fertilizer on your garden in the fall. It is bad
for the environment. and it is a waste of your money. With-
out the garden plants there is nothing to absorb the fertil-
izer. Consequently it washes away causing harm to creeks
and wetlands. Save your money and apply the fertilizer in
the springtime.
If you are inclined to add a chemical to your garden in
the fall time, check the pH level of your soil and see if you
should add lime or sulfur. Fall is an excellent time of the
year to add these chemicals. Simply spread them on the gar-
den soil and till.
Tilling your garden in the fall time is helpful in several
other ways. It helps destroy any insect larvae in the soil.
Also the thawing and freezing of the soil that occurs during
the winter and spring breaks down dirt clogs and ensures a
smoother soil for planting in the springtime.
Planting rye grass or another cover crop is a good idea
to prevent erosion and improve your gardens soil. Simply
broadcast it and rake it into the soil per the manufacturers
recommended levels. However, if you do decide to plant
a cover crop, you should do it earlier in the autumn sea-
son, typically before the leaves begin to fall off the trees. In
spring, till the cover crop over about one or two weeks be-
fore you plan to plant so that the cover crop plant material
has time to decompose.
With these few garden winterizing tips, your garden will
be prepared for another great planting in the spring.
