DI"ISION OF MARKS
For each of the two aers& marks will be evenly distributed between the >=* and 8,E comonents of that aer&
and each aer will contribute the same roortion of marks to the overall total#
The revised format enables the existin! content of the syllabus to be assessed in a more clinically relevant way& with a
!reater focus on basic science as alied to obstetric and !ynaecolo!ical ractice. 8oreover& the examination now
includes -uestions on data interretation and clinical mana!ement& in addition to existin! subCect domains. * tyical
distribution of marks for each of the subCect domains in the two aers is shown below& althou!h naturally this will
vary from sittin! to sittin!#
STANDARD SETTING
:ur well<established standard settin! rocedure ensures that the difficulty of each examination is taken into account
and is not linked to a set ass mark or rate. * different ass mark is used for each examination& deendin! on the
difficulty of that examination. (t is therefore also not ossible to ublish the ass mark for the examination in
advance. This is a comlex rocess& which involves assessin! the -uestions individually for their difficulty.
The aim of standard settin! is to imrove the fairness and validity of the examination rocess& and to set levels of
cometence for success in the examination. The use of these methods bears no relationshi whatsoever to the
ercenta!e of candidates who will succeed in the Part $ examination& or to any other external factors.
