World Suicide Prevention Day

Suicide is a major public health problem. Te psychologic-
al pain that leads each of these individuals to take their lives
is unimaginable. Teir deaths leave families and friends be-
ref, and ofen have a major ripple efect on communities.
Suicide is the ffh leading causes of death among those
aged 30-49 years in 2012 globally, and is the second lead-
ing cause of death in the 15-29 years age group in 2012
globally. Overall, it is estimated that during 2012 for each
adult who died of suicide there were 27 others who made
suicide attempts.
Te International Association for Suicide Prevention
(IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are
committed to preventing suicide. Tese organizations rec-
ognize World Suicide Prevention Day as an important day
in the international calendar. World Suicide Prevention Day
brings together individuals and organizations with an inter-
est in suicide prevention, and mobilizes eforts to save lives.
Discussing suicide openly and frankly and reaching out
to those who have become disconnected from others may
be a life-saving act. If you are at risk or know of someone
who might be thinking of suicide, let them know there is

son. Judy was born

zania, the youngest
of three children.
She had many fond
memories of her
childhood on a cof-
fee and tea plan-
tation. Her family
was forced to return
to Germany during
World War II. Judy even-
tually took an agriculture
course, then later moved to
Canada and received train-
ing as a practical nurse in
Sarnia, Ontario.

Judy is survived by her
loving brother, Hartfried, in
Sarnia, Ontario, and a niece
in Germany. She will be sin-
cerely missed by her family
of fellow believers through-
out British Columbia.

Jehovahs Witnesses in Nel-
son, on August 9th.

Call for 2014 Project Proposals
The Grassland and Rangeland Enhancement Program (GREP)
provides funds to persons and organizations wishing to carry
out activities on Crown Land that will enhance Rangeland and
Grassland values.
The program is funded by the Columbia Basin Trust and
administered locally by the Kootenay Livestock Association.
The GREP is currently accepting project proposals for consid-
eration for the remainder of 2014 and for the upcoming 2015
funding year.
The overriding purpose of the Grassland and Rangeland En-
hancement Program is to maintain and/or enhance grassland
resources while meeting conservation, environmental and
recreational objectives.
Some examples of projects funded to date under the GREP
include rangeland fences, protection of wetlands, innovative
gates and cattle-guards, restoration of damaged areas, inter-
pretive and educational signs and invasive plant management.
Applications are open to associations or societies, individuals,
range tenure holders or partnerships across the Columbia
Basin Region.

Boundary regions. Tis appeal is being done in cooper-
ation with the Regional Broadband Committee, com-
prised of the regional districts of Central Kootenay, Koo-
tenay Boundary, East Kootenay and Columbia Shuswap,
the Village of Valemount and the Ktunaxa Nation Council.
Trough the Digital Canada 150: Connecting Can-
adians initiative, the Canadian government has recently

Catch Dinner!
August has been a
great month for fshing
rainbows in Kootenay
Lake. A friend of mine
loves to fsh around
Woodbury Creek. Sev-
eral times a week she
grabs her kayak, heads
out just a little ofshore
and throws out a line.
On August 20 she
caught a beauty. Here is
the fsh! she exclaimed,
hoisting it in front of me
with only two fngers
tucked into the gills of a
whopper. Not bad eh!
From a kayak 30 inches,
14 to 16 lbs. Not sure my
weight scale is spot
on, so cannot be too
exact. Still, a lovely
fsh. I had to agree.
Te weekend be-
fore, my brother and
I had dinner at JBs
Restaurant & Pub
at Woodbury, and
chanced to overhear
a conversation about
fshing on Koote-
nay Lake. A couple
of tourists (I didnt
catch where they
were from) were
exclaiming about
their tremendous
fshing experience.
Tey said that afer
two hours, they had
caught 15 beauties, none under
fve pounds. Perfect eating fsh!
Teyll be back to Kootenay
Lake and Rainbow Country
next year, hoping for a repeat of
their holiday.
