CONT E NT S
Congregation Shaarey Zedek is a warm, welcoming, inclusive and egalitarian Conservative Jewish community.
We provide to all generations innovative, stimulating and diverse spiritual, educational leadership and social opportunities
that nurture our love and commitment to Jewish life, our Synagogue, our country and the State of Israel.
Our spiritual direction is led by committed, knowledgeable and caring clergy available to all.
Together, we participate in celebrating our history, enriching our community and planning our future.
M
y father always taught me that
if something is broken, we
should try to x it rst. Either
we will x it, or we will at least make it
worth the repairmans time to come out.
More often than not, by the way, it became worth the repair-
mans time to come out.
We are now in a season of the Jewish year, as well as in the
life and times of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, in which we
focus on Tikkun: the requirement to x that which is broken.
Certainly during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we are
commanded to perform Tikkun Atzmi a self-repair look-
ing at our own imperfections, and then working to improve
our relationships with others and with God by asking forgive-
ness and striving to do better. We are required to do Tikkun
Olam, that by working to repair the world we might gain for-
giveness for our misdeeds and we might begin to fulll God's
mission for the People of Israel: to be a kingdom of priests and
a holy nation. It is the Jews obligation to right the injustices of
society and to care for the poor, the widow and the orphan.
From a traditional standpoint, Tikkun Atzmi and Tikkun Olam
are the very essence of the meaning of life: we are put on earth
to repair.
And as 5774 comes to an end and we look forward to 5775,
in addition to Tikkun Atzmi and Tikkun Olam, I look forward
to partnering with you toward Tikkun Kehillah: repairing and
healing the fractures within our sacred community of Shaarey
Zedek. Wherever we see brokenness at home or out in the
world we are divinely obligated to repair it.
Interestingly, the origin of the notion of Tikkun may be
found in the Aleinu prayer, a nearly two-thousand-year-old text
ascribed to Rav, a Babylonian rabbi, and said three-times-a-day,
seven-days-a-week. Al kein n'kaveh l'cha ... l'taken olam b'-
malchut Shaddai: And so we hope in You, LORD our God ...
that You will perfect the world by Your sovereignty. As Rabbi
Dr. Reuven Hammer writes, Te world is out of joint and we
are hoping that God will with our help set it straight.
We are to partner with God, and with each other, to x all that
which is broken.
But embedded within the notion of Tikkun Olam is the
concept that Gods sparks may be found throughout all exis-
tence. And as we come upon this New Year, that energy from
the divine sparks is beginning to shine through. We held a rally
at CSZ recently in which more than 2000 people gathered to-
gether in support of Israel. We are beginning to heal the bro-
kenness. People are talking about and looking at Conservative
Judaism in new, healthy ways: we are beginning to heal the bro-
kenness. Tere is a renewed energy to participate in the life of
our sacred congregation, to learn about our challenges and to
seek solutions. We are beginning to heal the brokenness.
Shaarey Zedek is preparing yet again to take the mantle of lead-
ership within Conservative Judaism, and there are many step-
ping forward to play a role. We are beginning now not only to
heal, but to become whole once again.
Tis is the year of Tikkun, of repair. Tis is the year in
which we ask that Gods sparks will turn into a guiding torch.
As we begin to heal the brokenness, then, I am condent that
the ame of the Eternal is shining upon Congregation Shaarey
Zedek this year: a light of peace and a light of Torah; a light of
hope and a light of leadership, that tomorrow will certainly be
brighter than today. May this sacred light continue to shine
upon our sacred community for us, and for our children,
now and always.
Rebecca, Caleb and Ayal join me in wishing you shanah
tovah um'tukah: a good, sweet, healthy and happy New Year
for you and for all whom you love.

15 SUMMER SOIRE
CSZ VOLUNTEERS AT FORGOTTEN HARVEST
Our thanks to everyone who volunteered to help package donated produce and other foods, which were distributed to food banks,
soup kitchens and facilities that provide services to those in need. The Tikkun Olam committee needs your ideas! Help us decide
where we should help next. Contact Adam Finkel at adam.michael.finkel@gmail.com.
Opening their summer in style, approximately 60 young adults gathered at the beautiful home of Shari and Heyden Graham
for the first event to engage young members and potential members of CSZ. Attendees mingled, enjoying sushi and a kosher

PROPIS AND FRIENDS: FROM BIMAH TO BROADWAY
On a warm June evening in our Sanctuary, Shaarey Zedeks Hazzan David Propis, Cantor Alisa Pomerantz-Boro,
Cantorial soloist Shira Fox, Cantor Herschel Fox and the Chris Harden Trio entertained a full house of music lovers.
Te artists performed a range of selections from the Broadway stage, as well as familiar songs from the Synagogue
liturgy, covering a wide range of musical tastes. Te evening was capped by an artists reception where the perform-
ers mingled with the events Gold and Silver Patrons. We extend our deep appreciation to the Weisberg family, whose
sponsorship of the event made this special evening possible.

BARBEQUE, BEER AND BIBLE
Congregants gathered at the home of Sandra and Assistant Cantor Leonard Gutman for a relaxed evening of
schmoozing and adult learning. Assistant Cantor Gutman taught the group of approximately 25 members the process
for creating a new Torah. Te group enjoyed the evening, and look forward to more similar experiences with clergy.
