Specifcations of pumping sets with end-suction type electric and / or diesel
driven pumps, according to UNI EN 12845, UNI 10779 and UNI 11292
Standards (with reference to the relevant points of the same)
Hydro EN automatic pumping sets for water supply of fre systems, made in compliance with the requirements from the fol-
lowing reference Standards:
UNI EN 12845 - Automatic sprinkler systems
UNI 10779 - Hose reel and hydrants systems
UNI 11292 - Compartments for installations of fre fghting pumping sets (for the applicable aspects).
The pumping sets are designed to operate with water and for supplies of the single (9.6.1), single superior (9.6.2) and double
(9.6.3) types for the sprinkler system, and are compact, robust and modular.
In pumping sets with two pumps, the modularity makes it possible to provide the pumping units, with associated equipment,
in macrobloc pre-assembled that facilitate the transportation, handling, positioning and installation.
The pumping sets are built using components and materials PN 16 rating, so as to be compatible with the specifc operational
aspects indicated by the reference standards, with specifc respect to:
- Rated pressure of the set components not less than 1.2 MPa (12 bar) (UNI 10779, 6);
- Hydrostatic check of the fre-fghting system for at least two hours at the minimum of 14 bars (UNI 10779, 9.2.2) or a mini-
mum of 15 bar (19.1.1.2), to be performed during testing of the same.
The compositions of the pumping sets, according to the criteria of the standard are:
one or more electric driven main pumps for single water supply type
one electric driven pump + a diesel driven main pumps for water supplies of all types
one or more diesel driven main for water supplies of all types
one electric driven + two diesel driven main pumps (on request) for water supplies of all types
The pumping sets are ftted with a multistage pump for pressure maintenance ( jockey pump) which avoids unnecessary start-
up of the main pumps, by restoring the system pressurization in case of small leakages.
The performance of the pressure maintainance pump does not contribute to the calculation of the duty fow that feed the fre-
fghting system, and must be limited so as to be unable to feed even a single sprinkler, if open (10.6.2.5). Thus, in the case of
real need, it is always caused the starting of the main pumps..
The main pumps utilized are of the horizontal centrifugal end-suction type, with spacer coupling, so as to ensure to remove
independently either the pump end or the engine and inner parts of the hydraulics can be inspected without disconnecting the
piping from the pump body (10.1).

Pumps of the Hydro Sets have performance according to EN ISO 9906 Annex A (formerly ISO 2548) and their
Q-H characteristic is stable (10.1). The pumps are equipped with motors or engines that deliver at least the
power required at the fow corresponding to the NPSHR value equal to 16m (10.1.b).
The by-pass fow rate necessary to avoid overheating of the pump in case of operation against closed valve
(10.5) and the fow rate for cooling of the diesel engine (10.9.3.b), where used, shall be indicated by the
manufacturer and must be delivered by the selected pump in addition to the design fow rate (10.5).
For systems precalculated of the HHP and HHS types (High hazard class environments), the pump must be
able to provide 140% of capacity at a head not below the 70% of the head at the design fow rate (10.7.2).
In sets with two pumps, each one must be capable of delivering the required design performance (10.2).
If a second pump is present, it must be regarded as a reserve one. In sets with three pumps, each one must
be capable of delivering 50% of the capacity at the required design head (10.2). The third pump is for
reserve. When two or more pumps are installed, their characteristic curves are compatible to
work in parallel at any allowed fow rate (10.2).
In case of pumping sets with more than a pump for single superior or
double types of water supplies, only one pump can be driven by an elec-
tric motor while the other must be driven by a diesel engine (10.2).
When selecting the pump model, friction loss in the intake piping and
the suction level must fulfll the requirement of the standard:
NPSHD NPSHR + 1 [m] (10.6.2.1).
The mode of operation requires that for each pump two pressure-
switches are connected in such a way that each one can enable the
automatic starting (10.7.5.1), while the stop is manual (10.7.5.2).
In pumping sets for water supply of fre hose or hydrants systems it is permitted to use a timer for automatic stop of the main
pump after a minimum of 20 from the end of the water demand (UNI 10779, A.1.2).
The suction connections are sized in accordance with the provisions of rules in the respect of the prescribed minimum diame-
ter and maximum velocity at the maximum fow rate, i.e.: DN65 minimum and 1.8 m/s if the pumping set is installed in posi-
tive inlet pressure mode; DN80 and 1, 5 m/s if installed under suction lift condition.
The fttings have a controlled tapered angle to ensure thelowest possible friction loss. Those at the suction side have eccentric
shape to dispose of air in the inlet pipes (10.5, 10.6.2.1).
The check valves are of the sandwich type, with spacer device for easy maintenance.
The valves are lockable and have a status indicator (15.2). For sizes larger than DN 100 driving is by a wheel handle with gear
(UNI 10779, 6.3).
The valves and the cross sections of the hydraulic components are sized to minimize the friction loss so that the performance
delivered by the pumps are almost unaltered when transferred to the discharge point of the pumping sets.
The control panels are individual for each pump and have the following features and functions (10.8.5, 10.8):
enclosure class IP54
high breaking capacity fuses that allow the starting current to pass for at least 20
seconds.
Contacts conform to the AC3 category (10.8.5.3)
Direct on line starting (DOL) up to 30 kW
Star/Delta starting (/Y) from 37 kW onwards
Manual Start / Stop push-button for the motor
Selector for Operating mode TEST-0-AUT, with removable key
Push buttons for independent test of each pressure-switch per each pump
Push button for the test of the signaling lights of the panel
Single output (potential free contact) for each of the condition signals to be reported
to remote locations.

The jockey pump panel has the following components and functions on its front side:
door-blocking main switch, lockable
mains indicator light
selector for operating mode TEST-0-AUT
light indicators for pump in operation
light indicator for thermal switch tripping.
The panel is designed to receive a potential free signal (by relay) from a low level
detector, thus allowing the use of the jockey pump for restoring the level in the priming
tank.
The diesel engines driving the pumps can be operated continuously at full load and are chosen with a power output
corresponding to the ICFN code curve, according to ISO 3046 (10.9.1).
Diesel engines with rated power greater than 30kW are liquid cooled with dual belt driven pump and water-water heat
exchanger (10.9.3), so that their cooling is as independent as possible from the heat disposal conditions of the pump
installation room (UNI 11292 5.4.2.1).
The fuel tank is sized to allow at least 6 hours of operation (10.9.6).
The muffer is included in the scope of supply, as integrated or loose part to be mounted during installation.
In this case a piece of fexible hose is also provided for connection of the elements in the exhaust pipeline from diesel engine.
The starting of the diesel engine is provided by two DC batteries, whose charge is constantly secured.
Two battery chargers, one for each battery, are electronically controlled to obtain constant and
calibrated performance to ensure maximum effciency and extended battery lifetime.
The automatic and the manual starting systems are independent and utilize two different
power relays (10.9.7.1).
The starting of the diesel engines is based on an automatic sequence of six attempts
alternating on the two batteries with battery switch to any starting attempt.
For each starting request of the diesel engine, a dedicated electronic device allows for the
alternate use of the two batteries and the automatic exclusion of the battery that should
be ineffcient, if any (10.9.7.2).
In compliance with the requirements of the standards the following items are also
included in the scope of supply:
factory test report of diesel engines (10.9.13.1).

The measuring of performance supposed during system commissioning and periodi-
cal maintenance routines (20.3.2.5, 20.3.4.2), consists of the combination of vacuum
and pressure gauges (see above) and a fow rate test loop, complete with direct-rea-
ding meter and throttling valve, which confguration allows to measure the design
fow rate under adequate measurement accuracy ( 5%) and without draining the
system.
