WELCH, Minn. Walter Ray Williams Jr. won his ninth career PBA50 Tour title and
Norm Duke withstood a challenge from Tom Baker for PBA50 Player of the Year honors
in the PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino Open presented by Hammer Wednesday
at Island Xtreme Bowl.
In another all-Hall of Fame championship match, Williams of Ocala, Florida, who won
the USBC Senior Masters in June for his first title of the season, defeated Baker 268-224
in the championship match. With a win, Baker could have earned the 16 points necessary
to move ahead of Duke of Clermont, Florida, for the Player of the Year title.
Its a great way to end a season, said Williams, who is the PBA Tours all-time titles
leader with 47 wins. I had a good season and when you can win against the talent thats
out here now it makes it that much more satisfying.
I think Norm owes me dinner but you cant take anything away from him he bowled
awesome all year, Williams added.
Duke left the door open for Baker to make a run at Player of the Year when the two Hall
of Famers slugged it out in the Round of 8 with Baker winning the best-of-three match 2
games to 1.
Dukes nearest competitor in the Player of the Year race heading into the final tourna-
ment of the season was Hall of Famer Pete Weber of St. Ann, Missouri, eight points
behind, but he had to withdraw from the tournament prior to match play because of ill-
ness which required a hospital visit. He was treated and released.
In the semifinal matches, Baker of King, North Carolina, defeated Hall of Famer Randy
Pedersen of Orlando, 246-162 and Williams defeated Don Breeden of Urbandale, Iowa,
279-190, to advance to the championship match.
Williams 268 game in the title match and 279 in the semifinal match were his highest
games of the tournament.
I saved the best for last and that was the time to have them, said Williams who was
PBA50 Player of the year in 2012 and 2013. Earlier in the day I wasnt really executing
as well as I wanted but I was able to fine tune my adjustments at the right time.
Duke joined Baker as the only players to win PBA50 Player of the Year and Rookie of
the Year in the same season. Baker earned both honors in 2005 which was the start of a
record four consecutive PBA50 Player of the Year crowns for the 12-time PBA50 Tour
winner.
Player of the Year is what you aspire to and its the pinnacle of the year, Duke said.
When I got beat by Tom in the Round of 8, the ball wasnt in my court and thats never
a comfortable situation, but either way, I had a blast all season.
Also determined at the conclusion of the tournament which was seen live on pbas
online bowling channel Xtra Frame, were the top eight players in competition points who
earned an entry into World Series of Bowling VI in Las Vegas Oct. 24-Nov. 2 and a berth
in the World Series PBA Champions Challenge PBA50 qualifier. The qualifier will deter-
mine the two players who will compete in the finals to be televised by ESPN.

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. Ryan Shafer of
Horseheads, New York went 7-4-1 in
match play and finished with a 20-game
total of 4,593 pins to record a 146-pin vic-
tory over Brian LeClair of Albany, New
York in the PBA Bethmann-Russell
Syracuse Open presented by Radical at
Flamingo Bowl.
Shafer led qualifying but lost his first three
matches to lose the lead to LeClair. After
making a ball change, Shafer won his next
matches to race away to victory. LeClair,
with a 227 position-round game, held on to
second over Rick Graham of Lancaster,
Pennsylvania, by two pins.
In addition to his third regional win of the
season and the 26th of his career, Shafer
earned $2,500 and his competition points
lead to over 43,000 points over LeClair in the battle to
see who represents the East Region in the PBA
Regional Finals which will be held during the PBA
World Series of Bowling VI in Las Vegas. LeClair
earned $1,300 as the runner-up and Graham earned
$1,100 for finishing in third place.
The event also was the second of three PBA Womens
Regional events. Kristina Wendell of Poughkeepsie,
New York, qualified for match play for the second time
and virtually guaranteed her spot in the PBAW
Regional Finals in Las Vegas as well as a paid entry
into the World Series of Bowling. Her eighth-place fin-
ish earned her $780 and increased her point lead to
17,788 points over Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey,
who was unable to compete in the event.

including a perfect 300 game. Billy Clarke astonished the Coors Light

74.
As a competi-
tive bowler for
most of his adult
life, Stus had
always wondered
how he might
have done on the
PBA Tour. But
the opportunity to
compete in Tour
c o m p e t i t i o n
didnt present
itself until he was able to retire
from General Motors after 32
years at the age of 50 and he
became a regular on the Senior
Tour, now called the PBA50 Tour.
Even as a late-bloomer in the
professional ranks, Stus career on
the Senior Tour would ultimately
lead to his induction into the PBA
Hall of Fame in 2012.
Stus 11 PBA50 Tour titles ranks
fifth on the all-time list behind fel-
low Hall of Famers John
Handegard with 14 titles and Gary
Dickinson, Dale Eagle and Tom
Baker, each with 12.
In 1992, Stus earned Senior
Player of the Year honors thanks in
part to winning two titles. In July
of that year he became the first
Senior Tour player to bowl a 300
game on national
television, defeat-
ing Don Gilman,
300-188, in the
Pacific Cal Bowl
Senior Open in
Lakewood, Calif.
It was an
honor to bowl
with the sports
greats who I
admired my
whole life and I
always wondered
how I would
measure up, said
Stus, in his Hall
of Fame acceptance speech.
When I was able to retire at 50, I
started to get back to bowling seri-
ously and found I still had the
touch.
Bowling on the Senior Tour was
a lot more than achieving the
dream of bowling with the greats
of the game, he added. Just to be
around them and to remember all
the fun we had on and off the lanes
for those years was an experience
Ill never forget.
Stus had 50 top-five finishes in
173 PBA50 Tour Tournaments.

The tournament had divisions
for Adult, Senior (ages 50-plus
for men, 45-plus for women),
Super Senior (ages 60-plus for
men, 55-plus for women), Junior
A (ages 16-19) and Junior B
(ages 12-15) players.

ing the final game, Mexico held
off Team USA players Brittni
Hamilton of Webster, New York,
Holly Harris of Long Prairie,
Minnesota, Rob Gotchall of

THE MAGIC AT MAJESTIC
Jim Walsh Wins LIGBT Title
LEVITTOWN, NY - In one of the most amazing comebacks in LIGBT
history Jim Walsh, Glen Cove, NY won his second LIGBT title (first in
5 years) by defeating Alan Seeley, Wantagh, NY 241-237 in the final
shootout. Jim overcame a 41 pin deficit in the 5th frame to earn the
$1,000 top prize while Al earned $500 as the runner-up. Finishing third
with a 224 and earning $350 was Preston Cheeks, Brooklyn, NY. Fourth
went to Kevin Rabich, Ridge, NY with a 196 worth $300 and fifth was
taken by Rich Patson, Lindenhurst, NY with a 190 worth $250.
Jim started the match with 3 opens in his first 5 frames. Preston, Al,
and Kevin each had an early double and an open. Jim started his come-
back in the 6th frame with a strike and kept the string going until his fill
ball in the tenth frame. Al could have won his first title with a strike in
the tenth but he left two pins giving him second place.
Kegels 43 foot Autobahn pattern was used and scoring was on the
moderate side (710 cut at 1pm & 701 at 3pm). The high series of the
tournament was shot by our champion Jim Walsh with an 805 series in
the 3pm squad.
