JANUARY 28

Development of the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace, in
The MSI-90U Mk 2 Sensor & Weapon Control System is a modular, scalable
system which is especially well suited for upgrade of existing U209 submarines
as well as for installation in new built submarines.

MSI-90U has been designed to comply
with the requirements of the Royal
Norwegian Navy and the German Navy
for the Norwegian Ula-class U210 and
the German U212-class submarines.
The basic design philosophy has been
to achieve high, all-round
capabilities,system flexibility and
availability, with limited support costs,
through a structured design of the
functional parts of the system. This
design highlights the importance of

redundancy and independent operation
of the different subsystems.
MSI-90U is a software-based command
and weapons control system which uses
distributed processing, a high-capacity
serial data transmission system (Local
Area Network - LAN), and multifunction
operator consoles to achieve a high
degree of capability, flexibility and
availability.
The main features of the system are:
Distributed data processing using the 32
bit KS-900 general purpose computer
designed for real-time processing,
based on the commonly used Motorola
68020/68040 range of microprocessors.
The modular KS-900 is designed for
programming in Ada, C and Pascal.
A high-capacity LAN is used for data
communication between subsystems of
MSI-90U, between MSI-90U and
sensors and sensor-to-sensor
communication. Multifunction operator
consoles allowing every operator to
have access to all information in the
system as well as permitting the number
of operators to be adjusted to suit the
current tactical situation. That means
that one operator can operate the
complete system with one console in,
for example, a patrol situation.
In the standard MSI-90U configuration
four identical multifunction operator
consoles are used, which can be
configured to different console (work)
modes. The number of consoles can be
adapted to customer requirements built-
in redundancy allowing subsystems to
operate separately in a graceful
degradation fallback mode.
The LAN, named BUDOS, is based on
Ethernet and can interface
sensors/subsystems via Ethernet, RS-
422 or NATO STANAG 4156. Using
BUDOS, any subsystem can
communicate with any other connected

subsystem. Connection of new
subsystems can easily be made by
means of spare interfaces on the
existing BUDOS multiplexers, or by
adding more multiplexers.

Sensor & Weapon Control System Consoles

According to many experts NATO
submarine project 212 has a unique
tactical properties due to equip the latest
means of target detection, weapons
increased range and their integration
into an automated system of command
and control MSI-90U.

MSI-90U combines into a single
complex all submarine detection system
provides a classification and target
tracking (up to 25 simultaneously), their
distribution among weapons systems
EW, and administration of fire and eight
torpedo salvo in various combinations.

In addition, this system solves the
following tasks: threat assessment from
the enemy, carrying out calculations for
the tactical and navigational maneuver,
calculate the trajectories of propagation
of acoustic signals and therefore
forecasting range of the acoustical
means - both their and the enemy,
documenting processes and the daily
military activity, provision of training of
operators.

Submarine Modernizations
In developing MSI-90U focused on
achieving its universality and functional
flexibility. For compatibility with the
greatest possible number of existing and
future weapons systems and technology
MSI-90U has an open architecture and
built-in interfaces of different standards
(Ethernet, RS-422, NATO STANAG
4156). This should greatly facilitate the
process for possible submarine
modernization, as well as contribute to a
more simple and cheap modification
project submarines to meet the
requirements of potential export
customers.

The MSI-90U Mk 2 Combat
Management System is a modified
derivative of the original MSI-90U
system and it has already been sold to
the Italian Navy U212A 2nd Batch
submarine project as well as to the
Indonesian Navy for upgrade of their
Nanggala U209 class submarine.

Application Display Example
Kongsberg Command & Weapons
Control Systems Extensions to Italian
Submarines
Kongsberg Gruppen (KONGSBERG)
has signed a contract for extensions to
the Command & Weapons Control
Systems already under contract for
delivery to the two new U212A 2nd
Batch submarines under construction in
Italy for the Italian Navy. The contract
was made between the Italian
shipbuilder Fincantieri and Kongsberg.
The extensions include introduction of
the tactical data link systems Link-11
and Link-16, digital chart systems
(ECDIS, WECDIS), automatic radar
tracking (ARPA) and an automatic
identification system (AIS). Kongsberg
shall also be responsible for integration
of new sensor systems and the new
developed Italian heavy-weight torpedo
(NSP/Black Shark). With the integration
of these new capabilities, Kongsberg's
Command & Weapons Control System
(MSI-90U Mk 2) for conventional
submarines will be among the most
advanced in the world today.

Kongsberg New Passive Sonar
Processing Systems to Dutch
Submarines
Kongsberg has signed a contract for
supply of new Passive Sonar
Processing Systems (PSPS) as part of
the Sonar Suite Modification Project for
the four Walrus class submarines of the
Dutch Navy.

The Passive Sonar Processing System
(PSPS) is integrating hydrophone data
from all the passive sonars aboard into
one processing system. This PSPS
integration technology has proven to
produce more accurate target solutions
in shorter time by utilizing the full
potential of the sonar suite, and giving
the sonar operators flexibility to use
passive sonar data from any
combination of sonars to solve their
tasks.

The PSPS to be delivered will take full
advantage of the Sonar System
Upgrade solutions that have been
developed and are in production for the
Norwegian Ula class submarines. The
PSPS is already in operation in the
RNoN Ula Class (U210) submarines.

MSI-90U Mk 2 for KRI Nanggala of
Indonesian Navy
In January 2010 KDA signed a contract
with the Korean shipyard Daewoo
Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co.
Ltd. (DSME) for upgrade of the
Indonesian Navy U209 submarine KRI
Nanggala.
KDA will deliver one MSI-90U Mk 2
Sensor & Weapon Control System
consisting of: 2 ea. Multi-Function
Consoles, 1 ea. Torpedo Board
Interface (TBI 110A). The TBI 110A is
subcontracted to Whitehead Alenia
Sistemi Subacquei S.p.A. (WASS). The
TBI 110A will control the legacy German
SUT torpedo, but is prepared for control
of the Italian Black Shark torpedo. The
MSI-90U Mk 2 system will replace the
legacy SINBADS weapon control
system.
