Mobile Apps Integration Blueprint: Sharing the World with Insects

Week One: Habitats and Life Cycles

1. Learning goals:

a. During this week students will answer the question: What do insects need to survive ? They will
explore the four parts of an animal habitat in general, and then research specic habitats for at least
two insects.

b. Students will see that insects have stages to their life cycles. They will illustrate the life cycle of
one types of insect. Connections will be made between habitats and insect development and life
cycles.

c. Through this lesson, students will become more knowledgeable about insects and improve their
research skills. They will take initiative in deciding what insects to research and use creativity in
how to create, display and share their research. They will also become effective communicators
when sharing their research with their classmates and teacher.

2. Lesson

a. Introduction ( 5 minutes) Ask the students if they saw an insect that day. Where did they see it ?
What was it doing ? Allow up to ten students to share their answers. Write those insects on the
white board for future reference.

b. Review: ( 5 mi) Remind the students that they have learned what a habitat is. Review the four
parts of a habitat ( food, water, shelter, space/ territory). Name one of the insects that the children
saw that morning( answers from your introduction). Ask them if they know the habitat for that insect.
Let children share what they know - record that information on the whiteboard.

c. Transition: Tell the children that this week, they will be researching about insect habitats and life
cycles, and then they will be observing and collecting information about the insects that live around
them in Malawi.

d. Activity One: Research Habitats of two Insects and make a booklet or multimedia presentation
to share with others.

Mobile App Integration:

Meet the Insects ( for use on classroom iPads): Excellent App for research about many
insects and their habitats

Explain Everything ( for use on classroom iPads): Students can create a Multimedia
presentation or annotated Storyboard showing the habitats of two insects of their choice.

e. Activity Two: Research and Illustrate the Life Cycle for One Insect.

Students will tell if the insect goes through complete or incomplete
metamorphosis

Each stage of the life cycle must be illustrated and labeled.

The student will write a short paragraph on how an insects life cycle is
connected with its habitat. Some questions to think about: Where did this
insect choose to lay its eggs? Why? Where do the larva nd food ? Do
insects need protection while they are growing up ? How is this provided ?

Mobile App Integration:

Meet the Insects ( for use on classroom iPads): Excellent App for research
about many insects and their life cycles under Insect Stories

Explain Everything ( for use on classroom
iPads)

Students can create a Multimedia
presentation or annotated Storyboard
showing the life cycles of one insect of their
choice.

f. Activity Three: Observation and Collection of Insects in Malawi

Children will observe insects found on the school campus outside the classroom under teacher
supervision.

Instructions: With a partner, grab an iPad, and, using the Observation Journal on Meet the Insects
app go outside for some research. Use the camera on your iPad to take pictures of your insects and
upload those photos to your journal. You should record these things about the insects that you nd:

Where it was found
( describe surroundings -
grass, trees , owers, water,
dirt, etc.)

Was there a food or water
source nearby for the insect ?
Record what the insect might
have been eating or drinking
when you found it.

Try to make a journal entry
for at least ve ( 5) insects.

Share your Observation
Journal with your group at
your table when you return to
the classroom by trading
iPads.

Review: Combining Entertainment with

Education is always a great thing where kids
are involved. Children will quickly be drawn
into the world of insects by the amazing
multimedia features on these apps. Insect
Stories teach about life cycles, and the images
and video in Multimedia are top notch.
Students can record their own photos and
findings in the Observation Journal,
encouraging budding entomologists to head
out to conduct their own field research. After
learning about a large variety of insects, users
can test their knowledge using two types of
quizzes. A top pick by parents and educators,
the $5 price tag seems worth it for this high
quality science app.
