Education Mission Statement

As we all grow from children to adolescence and adolescence into adulthood we need to
develop intelligence. However, not everyone chooses to do this in the same way. Some chose not to
complete high school; while others pursue a higher education at college. College is meant to prepare
people for the next step of entering the real world by teaching essential skills that molds our minds to
comprehend information and utilize it in new ways. This process begins with general education classes
and is honed in higher education classes. These higher level classes allow students to become learners.
As learners we develop the ability to respond to different situations and develop creative solutions that
make a difference in the world. These changes involve understanding differences in diversity and valuing
contrasts in culture to make the world a more interrelated globe. Through learning how to
constructively debate and defend our ideas, our understanding of different cultures provides an insight
and empathy for everyone around us. When we reach this level of understanding were able to accept
more responsibility at companies handling more complicated problems and developing greater solutions
to the world around us. College provides us with the tools to succeed and the training to conquer all of
our future quests and careers. It is an invaluable experience that provides not only great networking
resources but knowledge and character enhancement as well.
As a student enters college, they are challenged to become a more qualified form of themselves.
College challenges students to move outside their comfort zone, dig deeper within their career field, and
to follow their chosen path to completion. The first way college does this is to challenge students to
explore multiple disciplines by requiring them to take courses outside of their major. The first scope of
this idea is to complete the general education breadth requirements that are intended to introduce
students to the nature, history, and methods of different disciplines; and to help students understand
the cultural, historical, and natural contexts shaping the human experience (University Studies). This
allows students to understand the global issues that surround us as well as learn how each discipline can
work together to solve them. The second way college challenges our thinking is to require students to
take depth education courses to dig deeper into other majors in hopes that a students interest may
blossom into a minor. Minors allow students to gain extensive knowledge in areas outside of their major
in order to become a more competent student and to explore passions they may not have had originally
when entering college. The third main way that college challenges our thinking is to follow the course of
our majors and to receive a degree that recognizes our proficiency and aptitude to succeed in a certain
career path. All general knowledge aside, a students major allows them land jobs in something they
have extensive knowledge and interest in.
When combined, general and depth education with major specific courses allows students to
develop personal skills, global knowledge, and career skills that make students flourish in the world as
they solve problems and meet people of all cultures and backgrounds with a newfound respect. College
is full of many opportunities and resources and is a phenomenal place of development. Throughout
college, students enter a realm of opportunity that will never be limited because they have the skills of a
learner, someone who can adapt themselves to pursue any new passion or career they come across.
