Optical Brighteners
Optical brighteners are used in white paints to intensify whiteness and in clearcoats to intensify the
brilliance of the underlying white base coats. They are also used as tracers to ensure proper application
and for identifcation. Due to the limited lightfastness of optical brighteners, their use is appropriate for
interior applications only.
Product CAS # Use
Benetex OB 7128-64-5 General purpose optical brightener for coatings
Benetex OB Plus 7128-64-5 Fine grind optical brightener for use in solvent-based coatings
Benetex OB-M1 27344-41-8 Water soluble optical brightener for water-based coatings
Photoinitiators
Photoinitiators have bonds that cleave when exposed to UV radiation. Photolysis leads to the formation
of free radicals, which are useful for promoting the polymerization of monomers and oligomers containing
acrylate functionality.

Ultraviolet Absorbers (UVA)
UV absorbers improve exterior durability of coatings by absorbing ultraviolet radiation which otherwise
can cause polymer degradation. They help protect clearcoats and semi-transparent stains as well as light
sensitives substrates such as wood and plastics with these types of coatings. They are also used along with
HALS to protect one-coat fnishes and basecoats.
Product CAS # Use
BLS 531 1843-05-6 Solid benzophenone UVA recommended for use in coatings with
moderate weatherability requirements
BLS 1328 25973-55-1 Solid benzotriazole UVA recommended for use in coating systems
cured at low or ambient temperatures
BLS 234 70321-86-7 Solid, high molecular weight benzotriazole UVA recommended for
solvent based and powder coatings
BLS 384-2 127519-17-9 Liquid benzotriazole UVA with excellent thermal stability and
photopermanence
BLS 1130 104810-48-2 Liquid benzotriazole UVA recommended for general use in solvent
and water-based coatings
Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers (HALS)
HALS play a critical role in the protection of coatings from the effects of weathering by preventing
photooxidative degradation of the binder. Practical benefts of using HALS in coatings include protection
from cracking, delamination, and improved gloss retention.

Antioxidants
Antioxidants are useful for protecting coatings from thermally induced oxidation, for example during high
temperature curing operations.
