I#$S Societies for the same thing, i.e. re<uirements to the effect that
specific measures, repairs, surveys etc. are to be carried out within a specific
time limit in order to retain class.
&emoranda +ther information of assistance to the surveyor and owners
may be recorded as ImemorandaJ or a similar term. 'hey may, for e3ample,
include notes concerning materials and other constructional information. #
memorandum may also define a condition which, though deviating from the
technical standard, does not affect the class
Dual Class # dual class vessel is one which is classed by two Societies
between which there is a written agreement regarding sharing of work,
reciprocal recognition of surveys carried out by each of the Societies on
behalf of the other Society and full e3change of information on the class
status and survey reports.
Double Class # double classed vessel is one which is classed by two
Societies and where each Society works as if it is the only Society classing
the ship, and does all surveys in accordance with its own re<uirements and

-. 'he Safe ?orking 1oad ES?1 testF weight is attached to the davit ropes
and the winch operated to raise the weight to the normal height that the
lifeboat would be stowed.
/. 'he winch brake is released and the weight allowed to free-fall a few

# #articularl. Sensiti'e Sea Area (#SSA) is an area that needs special protection
through action by I=+ because of its significance for recogniDed ecological or socio-
economic or scientific reasons and which may be vulnerable to damage by international
maritime activities. 'he criteria for the identification of particularly sensitive sea areas and
the criteria for the designation of special areas are not mutually e3clusive. In many cases a
*articularly Sensitive Sea #rea may be identified within a Special #rea and vice versa.
Re+ G *,- O@one Depletin+ Substances-
Fluorocarbons is a general term for any group of synthetic organic
compounds that contain fluorine and carbon.$F$Js can be easily converted
from gas to li<uid or li<uid to gas. Because of these properties, $F$
emitted into the atmosphere, break down molecules in the %arthKs oDone
layer.
'he substitute for $F$Js are hydrofluorocarbons E&F$KsF. &F$Js do not
harm or breakdown the oDone molecule, but they do trap heat in the
atmosphere, making it a greenhouse gas. &F$Js are used in air conditioners
and refrigerators.
'he way to reduce emissions is to be recycle coolant and all leaks are
properly fi3ed . #lso, recover the coolant before throwing appliances.
#nne3 6I prohibits deliberate emissions of oDone depleting substances,
which include halons and chlorofluorocarbons E$F$sF. ew installations
containing +DS are prohibited on all ships. But new installations containing

Treat.= # ItreatyJ is a formally concluded and ratified agreement between States. treaty
must be E-F a binding instrument, E/F concluded by states or international organiDations
with treaty-making powerH E0F governed by international law and E8F in writing.
Con'ention= # IconventionJ is a formal agreement between States. IconventionJ is thus
synonymous with the generic term ItreatyJ. $onventions are normally open for participation
by the international community as a whole, or by a large number of States. !sually the
instruments negotiated under the auspices of an international organiDation are entitled
conventions
#rotocol= protocolJ is used for an additional legal instrument that complements to a treaty.
# protocol may be on any topic relevant to the original treaty and is used either to further
address something in the original treaty, address a new or emerging concern or add a
procedure for the operation and enforcement of the treaty]such as adding an individual
complaints procedure. # protocol is IoptionalJ because it is not automatically binding on
States that have already ratified the original treatyH States must independently ratify or
accede to a protocol.
Article= International legal instruments generally include a *reamble and a series of
IarticlesJ, which lay out the obligations of those States choosing to be bound by it and
procedural matters involving the treaty.
Adoption= I#doptionJ is the formal act by which the form and content of a proposed treaty
te3t are established. 'reaties negotiated within an international organiDation like the !nited
ations are usually adopted by a resolution of a representative organ of the organiDation
whose membership more or less corresponds to the potential participation in the treaty in
<uestion.
Amendment= it is a formal alteration of treaty provisions affecting all the parties to the
particular agreement.
'acit #cceptance G- within -5months E4 A-/ Fbased on obNecting within time period
$lassic #cceptance G- normally /8months traditional voting method
Si+nature= ISignatureJ of a treaty is an act by which a State provides a preliminary
endorsement of the instrument. Signing does not create a legal binding, but consider
ratifying it. it oblige the State to refrain from acts that would defeat or undermine the
treatyJs obNective and purpose.
Ratif.ERatification= I"atificationJ is an act by which a State signifies an agreement to be
legally bound by the terms of a particular treaty. 'o ratify a treaty, the State first signs it
and then fulfils its own national legislative re<uirements. 'he instrument of ratification, is
then prepared and deposited with the Secretary-(eneral .
AccedeEAccession= I#ccessionJ is an act by which a State signifies its agreement to be
legally bound by the terms of a particular treaty. It has the same legal effect as ratification,
but is not preceded by an act of signature. 'o accede to a treaty, follows its domestic
approval procedures and makes a formal decision to be a party to the treaty. 'hen, the
instrument of accession, is prepared and deposited with Secretary-(eneral.
Deposit= 'he depository must accept all notifications and documents related to the treaty,
e3amine whether all formal re<uirements are met, deposit them, register the treaty and
notify all relevant acts to the parties concerned.
Entr. into !orce= # treaty does not enter into force when it is adopted. 'ypically, the
provisions of the treaty determine the date on which the treaty enters into force, # treaty
enters into force for those states which gave the re<uired consent.

8. o doors, manholes, access openings, ventilation ducts or any other
openings shall be fitted in the collision bulkhead below the bulkhead deck.
:. the collision bulkhead may be pierced below the bulkhead deck by not
more than one pipe for dealing with fluid in the forepeak tank, provided
that the pipe is fitted with a screw-down valve capable of being operated
from above the bulkhead deck, the valve chest being secured inside the
forepeak to the collision bulkhead.
4. 'he #dministration may, however, authoriDe the fitting of this valve on the
after side of the collision bulkhead provided that the valve is readily
accessible under all service conditions and the space in which it is located
is not a cargo space.
9. #ll valves shall be of steel, bronDe or other approved ductile material.
6alves of ordinary cast iron or similar material are not acceptable.
5. If the forepeak is divided to hold two different kinds of li<uids the
#dministration may allow the collision bulkhead to be pierced below the
bulkhead deck by two pipes.
.. 'he number of openings in the e3tension of the collision bulkhead above
the freeboard deck shall be restricted to the minimum. #ll such openings
shall be capable of being closed weather tight.

'ribology is a multidisciplinary science dealing with friction, wear, and
lubrication of interacting surfaces in relative motion.
?he pocess of monitoing the condition of eHuipment though the anal#sis of popeties
of its lubicating and othe oils. ?#picall# conducted though the measuement of
