The Pneumatic Seal Testing Procedure for
30-C-2001/30-C-2002/30-C-1001
1. Purpose
1.1 This specification shows the execution procedure and the acceptance criteria of the
Pneumatic Seal Testing
2. Scope
2.1 This procedure applies to the Pneumatic Seal Testing of the machined casing
compressors produced by Shenyang turbine machinery Co., LTD.
3. Test purpose and requirements
3.1 Test purpose: the Pneumatic Seal Testing must be carried out after passing the
Hydrostatic Test with the purpose of checking casing for unexposed micro defects.
3.2 Test areas: Chamber of casing and seal area.
3.3 Test pressure value: Test pressure value: .The test pressure shall be the maximum
pressure allowed in working, unless different directions are shown in job documents.
The specific requirements are showed in the Table 1, Table 2 and Table 3 in the
pressure test showing.

3.4 Test gas
The testing gas used in the Pneumatic Seal Testing is helium which is stored in
bottles.
Air or inert gas shall be used for testing (e) . For Centrifugal Compressors,
Helium (He) shall be used for testing, in accordance with API 617. The specific
requirements are showed in the Table I in the pressure test showing.
3.5 Seal of test parts and components
3.5.1
All openings of end covers shall be sealed with dedicated pressure test tools.
3.5.2
All openings of the test parts shall be sealed with dedicated pressure test tools or
the test parts shall be sealed with some components of the test parts together with its
pressure test tools.
3.6 Test instruments
Testing equipment shall include a pressure gauge with suitable scale to have the
testing pressure comprised between 25% and 75% of the whole scale, and with, at
least, a Class accuracy rating.
3.7 Test fluid
In case of submerged test, an anti-corrosive product will be added in the water in
order to prevent the corrosion of tested part ( not required for stainless steel parts )
3.8 Methods and approaches
3.8.1 Before test:
3.8.1.1
The Pneumatic Seal Testing should proceed after passing the Hydrostatic Test.
3.8.1.2
Before the Hydrostatic Test, clean a variety of experimental residue on the surface of
the Specimen.
3.8.1.3
Install the seal tools.
3.8.1.4
Link to the gas source.
3.8.2 During test:
3.8.2.1
Test shall be conducted with the part submerged in water. As an alternative, a
non-submerged soap-bubble test may be performed, if approved by the purchaser.
3.8.2.2
Start the air valve to pressurize the chamber of casing and the seal area, pay
attention that the pressure shall be raised and reduced slowly. While pressure is
increasing, for safety reasons, it is absolutely for bidden to access the testing place
and to do any operation on the item being tested.
3.8.2.3
Raise the pressure slowly in times, and stop the pressure rise when it gets 5MPaG.
Paint the vesicant on the suspicious place for preliminary tests. If there is not any gas
leakage or abnormal phenomenaraise the pressure to 10MPaG and then test again.
After the second test, raise the pressure 1MPaG each time, until it get the test
pressure.
3.8.2.4
When getting the test pressure close the valve between the air valve and the
compression chamber. Hold for a minimum of 15 minutes prior to examination. In
case of submerged test, this step shall be carried out in water in order to eliminate the
air bubble trapped in part porosity.
3.8.2.5
The duration of the examination shall be minimum 30 minutes at the testing
pressure and in any case for a sufficient period of time to permit complete inspection
of the part under pressure.
3.8.2.6
The temperature of the surface of the part to be examined shall not be below 5 C
or above 50 C.
3.8.2.7
The minimum light intensity at the examination surface shall be 1000lux.
3.8.3 After test
After passing the test, then open the discharge valve tardily. Reduce the pressure
slowly, and removed the seals, when the pressure gauge index confirms to zero.
3.8.3.1 Cleaning and rust prevention
After the Pneumatic Seal Testing, dry all surface immediately. If there is corrosion
phenomena on the surface of the specimen, remove the rust in time, then dry it
immediately. And then we should use passivation solution to passivat promptly, dry in
the open air.
3.8.4 Security technology
As the helium test pressure is high, the safe operation, protection and security
measures are very important.
3.8.4.1 Safe operation
3.8.4.1.1
Before increasing the pressure, check the reliability of the test system carefully
and adjust the safety valve and pressure gauge.
3.8.4.1.2
It is strictly prohibited to use pressured bolts when rise pressure, examine leakage
and eliminate.
3.8.4.1.3
Perform the examination if there is no obvious leakage when arrive the test pressure
3.8.4.1.4
At the test site, non-staff members are prohibited to stay.
3.8.4.1.5
Fireworks is strictly prohibited in the test area
3.8.4.2 Security protection and measures
3.8.4.2.1
Stored helium cylinders should meet the pressure container request and equipped
with pressure gauge and safety valve.
3.8.4.2.2
At the test site, inspectors should conduct the passenger take an alternative route, so
that the test is carried out smoothly.
3.8.4.2.3
Inform relevant security personnel before the test, the security personnel shall
inspects on site during the test.
4 Acceptance criteria:
The compressor casing shall be tested for gas leakage with helium in accordance
with pressure given in Table I. Under the test pressure, place the test parts immersed
in the water pool and it shall be considered as qualified when no bubbles is observed
for 30 min.
