SEPTEMBER 8TH IS INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organiza-
tion (UNESCO) established Literacy Day in 1965 to call attention
to the world-wide issues of illiteracy. Nations throughout the world
recognize that deficits in literacy are contributing to unemployment,
poverty and many other societal problems. It is more likely for
children to have low literacy in homes where parents have low
educational levels. Conversely, children with engaged home lit-
eracy environments demonstrate higher reading levels at an early
age. In New York, an estimated 2.7 million adults lack basic lit-
eracy, math and employment stills. Low-level reading and math
skills are linked to poverty, incarceration and dropout rates. Whats
more, the same individuals lack basic health, financial and con-
sumer literacy, according to Literacy New York, Inc., which serves
more than 6,500 adults each year through a network of 34 affili-
ates and their volunteers. Although these statistics are grim, theres
no reason to give up hope, because you can help! Literacy Volun-
teers of Rensselaer County will offer a one-hour Volunteer Op-
portunities Information Session on Wednesday, September 10th,
12:00 noon at the LVORC office, 1915 Fifth Avenue, Troy. Call
274-8526 to reserve a space. LVORC is looking for volunteers to
be individual tutors to adult learners, as well as reading mentors for
Everybody Wins! Power Lunch, and for tutors to work with incar-
cerated learners in Rensselaer County Jail. For more information,
visit www.lvorc.org.

THE PAINTINGS OF D. STEVENS BURGESS. The artwork
of Salem artist, D. Stevens Burgess, is currently on display in the
first floor Benn Room of the Salem Courthouse Community Center
and will remain on view through the month of September. Stevens
was born in New Delhi, India and studied art in Bangkok, Thailand
and New York. His exhibit contains 17 works focusing on land,
water and the natural world. His studies are creations of his own
imagination, and he no longer uses points of reference in any of his
pieces. His tones are subtle, and his paintings draw the viewer into
the landscape in a most relaxing manner. Stevens has exhibited his
work in several area galleries with this being his third exhibit at the
CCC. The Benn room is handicap accessible and open to the
public.
BINGO Every Monday, the Bennington Elks hosts bingo.

THE 29TH ANNUAL SANDY HILL DAYS WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY, SEPT. 5TH AND SATURDAY, SEPT. 6TH IN
HUDSON FALLS. Due to the construction project in the village, we have had to make a change in the location of the Arts and Crafts that is usually held in Juckett Park. This
year the arts and crafts will be held on the grounds of the Zion Episcopal Church on Main St., just north of the village hall. A sincere thanks to Rev. Richard Chandler and the members
of the Zion Episcopal Church for allowing us to use their grounds. There will be no fireworks display this year.

LAND DONATED TO SAVE ENDANGERED OWLS! Some very generous people have offered
to donate 14 acres of prime habitat in Fort Edward to Friends of the IBA, a local nonprofit working to
protect endangered Short-eared Owls and other at risk grassland birds and their habitat. The parcel is
located in the heart of the Washington County Grasslands Important Bird Area. Friends of the IBA
(FIBA) is asking for your help to raise $20,000 to cover costs of transferring the land and future
management costs. We need to raise one third of that amount by September 1st to be able to close on
the property, said FIBA President & Director Laurie LaFond. Every contribution helps. This is an
important first acquisition in our Land for Owls campaign. Friends of the IBA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
and the first official New York State DEC steward of the Washington County Grasslands state areas.
Friends of the IBA was awarded a $5,000 grant from the NYS Conservation Partnership Program by
DEC and Land Trust Alliance in May. LaFond said the grant, funded through the Environmental
Protection Fund (EPF), will help advance the groups mission to provide safe habitat for these beautiful
birds and educate the public about them. Mail checks to Friends of the IBA, P.O. Box 82, Fort Edward,
NY 12828, or call (518) 499-0012 and leave a message. Visit www.ibafriends.org for more info!
Note: The Washington County Grasslands is critical to the survival of Short-eared Owls, as well as
hundreds of other native birds and mammals.

HE SESSION OF STILLWATER UNITED CHURCH (PRESBYTERIAN U.S.A.) IS
EXTREMELY EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THEIR SELECTION OF INTERIM PASTOR.
REVEREND ALINE RUSSELL, D.MIN. OF ALTON, ILLINOIS will officially start serving
Stillwater United on August 25, and preach her first sermon on Sunday, August 31, at the 9:30
a.m. service. We are pleased to introduce her to you and believe that her pastoral and counseling
experience and spiritual gifts fit very well with the current needs of our church during this time of
transition. She received her Doctor of Ministry degree from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia
in 1977, specializing in Pastoral Care and Counseling, and has current licenses as a Clinical Professional
Counselor, including Pastoral Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapist. Aline was Interim Pastor
at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Billings, Montana and previously worked with an interfaith
counseling center in St. Louis, Missouri, while maintaining a private practice in Alton, Illinois. Pastor
Aline writes, It is important for us to be open to people whose personal faith is different than ours.
When they speak to us from their hearts, they might be for us in that moment the voice of God. It
behooves us to listen.
The search team said, It has been exciting to become increasingly aware of the evidence that Gods
hand was at work to unite Aline with our congregation. We look forward to having her here and
invite you to come to meet Pastor Aline at the 9:30 a.m. service on Sunday, August 24, 2014. This will
be the first of many opportunities to welcome her into our Stillwater United family and the community.
Please join us!

discussion at the upcoming meeting on September 8, 2014. We'll also celebrate the bounty of our
home gardens with the very productive growing season, and ask that all bring a dish to share from
whatever has been growing in your garden (no weeds, please!) If you have any mementos of Easton
Neighbor happenings from years past, i.e., newspaper articles, souvenirs, photographs, please bring
them to the meeting. We will be assembling an Easton Neighbors archive to be available for public
access. All are invited to attend Monday, September 8, 2014 at the Easton United Methodist Church
on Route 40, at 6:30 PM. Please bring a dish to share and your own beverage and table service.
