Welcome
Thank you f or choosi ng t he Broadband Rout er wi t h 2 Phone Ports. Thi s Rout er wi l l al l ow your computers to share
a hi gh- speed Int ernet connect i on as wel l as resources, i ncl udi ng f i l es and pri nt ers. And af t er you have set up
your Vonage ser vi ce, you wi l l be abl e t o make phone or f ax cal l s usi ng t he Int ernet .
How does t he Rout er do al l of t hi s? By connect i ng your comput ers and peri pheral s, i ncl udi ng phones or f ax
machi nes, t o t he Rout er and connect i ng t he Rout er t o your cabl e or DSL modem, t hen t he Rout er can di rect and
cont rol communi cat i ons f or your net work.
But what does al l of t hi s mean?
Net works are usef ul t ool s f or shari ng Int ernet access and comput er resources. Mul t i pl e comput ers can share
Int ernet access, so you don t need more t han one hi gh- speed Int ernet connect i on. Wi t h Int ernet phone ser vi ce,
your Int ernet access can now be shared by your phones or f ax machi nes as wel l . You wi l l be abl e t o make phone
cal l s usi ng t he account you set up wi t h Vonage, even whi l e you re surfi ng t he Int ernet . Pl us, you can access one
pri nt er f rom di f f erent computers and access dat a l ocat ed on anot her comput ers hard dri ve. Net works are even
used f or pl ayi ng mul t i pl ayer vi deo games. So, net works not onl y are usef ul i n homes and of f i ces, but al so can be
f un.
PCs on a wi red net work creat e a LAN, or Local Area Net work. They are connect ed wi t h Et hernet cabl es, whi ch i s
why t he net work i s cal l ed wi red .
To creat e your network, i nstal l and set up t he Rout er. To gui de you t hrough t he process, Li nksys st rongl y
recommends t hat you run t he Set up Wi zard on t he Set up CD- ROM. If you pref er t o manual l y set up t he Rout er,

The Rout ers Net work Address Transl at i on (NAT) t echnol ogy prot ect s your net work of PCs so users on t he
Int ernet cannot see your PCs. Thi s i s how your LAN remai ns pri vat e. The Rout er prot ect s your net work by
i nspect i ng t he f i rst packet comi ng i n t hrough t he Int ernet port bef ore del i very t o t he f i nal dest i nat i on on one of
t he Et hernet port s. The Rout er i nspect s Int ernet port ser vi ces l i ke t he web ser ver, f t p ser ver, or ot her Int ernet
appl i cati ons, and, i f al l owed, i t wi l l f orward t he packet t o t he appropri at e PC on t he LAN si de.
The Use of IP Addresses
IP st ands f or Int ernet Prot ocol . Ever y devi ce i n an IP- based net work, i ncl udi ng PCs, pri nt ser vers, and rout ers,
requi res an IP address t o i dent i f y i ts l ocat i on, or address, on t he net work. Thi s appl i es t o bot h t he Int ernet and
LAN connect i ons.
There are t wo ways of assi gni ng IP addresses t o your network devi ces.
A st at i c IP address i s a f i xed IP address t hat you assi gn manual l y t o a PC or ot her devi ce on t he net work. Si nce a
stati c IP address remai ns val i d unti l you di sabl e i t , stati c IP addressi ng ensures t hat t he devi ce assi gned i t wi l l
al ways have t hat same IP address unt i l you change i t. St at i c IP addresses are commonl y used wi t h net work
devi ces such as ser ver PCs or pri nt ser vers.

If you use t he Rout er t o share your cabl e or DSL Int ernet connect i on, cont act your ISP t o f i nd out i f t hey have
assi gned a stati c IP address t o your account . If so, you wi l l need t hat st at i c IP address when conf i guri ng t he
Rout er. You can get t he i nf ormat i on f rom your ISP.
A dynami c IP address i s aut omat i cal l y assi gned t o a devi ce on t he net work. These IP addresses are cal l ed
dynami c because t hey are onl y t emporari l y assi gned t o t he PC or ot her devi ce. Af t er a cert ai n t i me peri od, t hey
expi re and may change. If a PC l ogs ont o t he net work (or t he Int ernet ) and i t s dynami c IP address has expi red,
t he DHCP ser ver wi l l assi gn i t a new dynami c IP address.
A DHCP ser ver can ei t her be a desi gnat ed PC on t he net work or anot her net work devi ce, such as t he Rout er. By
def aul t , t he Rout ers Int ernet Connect i on Type i s Obtain an IP automatically (DHCP).
The PC or net work devi ce obt ai ni ng an IP address i s cal l ed t he DHCP cl i ent . DHCP f rees you f rom havi ng t o
assi gn IP addresses manual l y ever y t i me a new user i s added t o your net work.
For DSL users, many ISPs may requi re you t o l og on wi t h a user name and password t o gai n access t o t he
Int ernet . Thi s i s a dedi cat ed, hi gh- speed connect i on t ype cal l ed Poi nt t o Poi nt Prot ocol over Et hernet (PPPoE).
PPPoE i s si mi l ar t o a di al - up connect i on, but PPPoE does not di al a phone number when est abl i shi ng a
connect i on. It al so wi l l provi de t he Rout er wi t h a dynami c IP address t o est abl i sh a connect i on t o t he Int ernet .
By def aul t , a DHCP ser ver (on t he LAN si de) i s enabl ed on t he Rout er. If you al ready have a DHCP ser ver runni ng
on your net work, you MUST di sabl e one of t he t wo DHCP ser vers. If you run more t han one DHCP ser ver on your
net work, you wi l l experi ence net work errors, such as conf l i ct i ng IP addresses. To di sabl e DHCP on t he Rout er,

Ethernet 1- 4 These four Ethernet port s connect t o net work devi ces, such as PCs or more swi t ches.
Reset Button There are t wo ways t o reset the Rout er' s f actor y defaul t s. Ei ther press t he Reset Button f or
f i ve seconds, or rest ore t he def aul t s f rom t he Rout er' s Web- based Ut i l i t y.
Power The Power port i s where you wi l l connect t he power adapt er.

POWER Bl ue/ Red. The POWER LED l i ght s up bl ue when t he Rout er i s powered on. If t he bl ue LED i s
f l ashi ng, t he Rout er i s boot i ng up or upgradi ng i t s f i rmware. If t he LED l i ght s up red, t hen
di sconnect t he power, and wai t f i ve seconds. Then reconnect t he power.
ETHERNET 1- 4 Bl ue. The ETHERNET LED l i ght s up when t here i s an act i ve connect i on t hrough t he

Connecting the Router to Your Broadband Modem
1. Make sure t hat your devi ces are powered of f, i ncl udi ng t he Rout er, PCs, and broadband modem.
2. Connect your broadband modems Et hernet cabl e t o t he Rout ers Int ernet port .
3. Connect one end of an Et hernet net work cabl e t o one of t he numbered port s on t he back of t he

MTU. The MTU (Maxi mum Transmi ssi on Uni t ) set ti ng speci fi es t he l argest packet si ze permi t t ed f or net work
transmi ssi on. Sel ect Auto t o have t he Router aut omat i cal l y sel ect t he MTU val ue, or sel ect Manual and ent er t he
val ue desi red. It i s recommended t hat you l eave t hi s val ue i n t he 1200 t o 1500 range. For t wo Int ernet connect i on
t ypes, Obt ai n an IP aut omat i cal l y and St at i c IP, t he MTUs def aul t val ue i s 1500. For PPPoE, t he MTUs def aul t

VPNs t hat use IPSec and AH (Aut hent i cat i on Header known as prot ocol 51) are i ncompat i bl e wi t h t he Rout er.
