Pick Up Service

We will arrange a pick up service for you and those new incoming foreign degree students that will be arriving from abroad
during 15 - 26 August (Monday through Friday). The pick up service will be arranged by means of tutor students, mostly
second-year students of the Degree Programme in Information Technology (DIN). If possible, they will get the key to your
place of accommodation in advance. Moreover, they will meet you at the airport/train/bus station and accompany you to
your place of accommodation.

In order to make the required arrangements concerning the pick up service, please provide us with your arrival information
via the aforementioned registration form as soon as possible, at the latest on 15 August. Please note that in case we do
not receive your arrival information on time, we may not guarantee the pick up service. It is strongly recommended to arrive
on a working day (Monday through Friday) and only in the daytime, as your room key needs to be picked up in advance
from a Housing Agency Office, and these offices are typically open only on working days, from 8.00 - 16.00.

If you arrive outside the mentioned dates and times, please be prepared to take care of you arrival issues independently. If
need be, we may ask you to take a taxi from the airport/train/bus station to your place of accommodation. Note also that you
have to arrange your accommodation independently. We are not able to provide any student housing on the part of Oulu
UAS. Thus, please apply to and book your accommodation as soon as possible by your own, see enclosed housing
information. Also, if needed, please handle your residence permit application swiftly, see enclosure (applies only to
students from outside of the EU/EEA).

Once youve registered via the above-mentioned form, keep us informed about your arrival, place of accommodation
and, if applicable, your residence permit status at din@oamk.fi. You may also use our international tutoring services, see
next page.

International Tutoring

International tutoring (http://u.oamk.fi/internationaltutoringprocess) shall be provided for those students who are using
the pick up service, or otherwise wish to get a local peer tutor student. If you wish to get an international tutor, please sign
up for international tutoring via the aforementioned registration form as soon as possible, at the latest on 15 August.

A tutor student assists you and other incoming students with getting to your place of accommodation upon your arrival.
He/She will guide you to familiarise with your study place and living environment, especially in the initial phase of your
studies and living in Oulu.

Our tutor students have been trained for the purpose of international tutoring by the student union OSAKO and international
coordinator of the Oulu UAS Kotkantie Campus. They are mostly second-year students of the Degree Programme in
Information Technology (DIN). Tutor students complement our staff such as international coordinators, study affair officers
and teachers in facilitating a good learning experience for and with you (see http://u.oamk.fi/learningexperience).
DIN offers also a tutor teacher for the entire student group, and he/she will assist you in coping with your studies and
environment throughout your DIN studies.

Weve created a facebook group for you and other incoming students as well as our tutor students and tutor teacher,
international coordinators and teachers of DIN. Please request membership for it at
https://www.facebook.com/groups/ouas.engineering.degree.and.tutors.

The idea of this facebook group is to help you/us sharing information and building up a study group spirit in DIN.
Feel free to post and comment anything relevant to your DIN studies, student mobility, arrival, tutoring etc., however, with
the exception of residence permit and other personal issues. The lingua franca is English. Please follow the simple
standards of netiquette, the core rule being "Do unto others as you would have done to you."

You may also reach us at din@oamk.fi to keep us posted concerning your arrival and stay. Information and the schedule of
your DIN studies will be given during the Orientation Days, 27 - 29 August 2014.

Orientation Days

Orientation Days (http://u.oamk.fi/dinorientation2014) will take place from Wednesday, 27 August, at 8.00 until Friday,
29 August in the premises of Oulu UAS, School of Engineering, Kotkantie 1. The final programme with times and locations
will be provided later in August by e-mail, after weve received your registration via the above-mentioned form.

Orientation days are the best possible way to get oriented to your new university as well as to studies, along with
international tutoring and a proactive attitude and approach to your DIN studies and life in Oulu.

Please note that the orientation days are a mandatory part of your education and we wish everyone to be present. We
will have a general introduction to the DIN study programme, our campus and arrange team building activities together with
the student union and tutor students of DIN. Furthermore, we will provide guides for you and other incoming students and
help you with the registration at Oulu UAS, the Local Register Office in Oulu.

In case you have any questions concerning your DIN studies or arrival arrangements, please contact us and always use the
e-mail address din@oamk.fi .

Travel Instructions
N.B.! Information is directive and subject to change and has been checked last time in May 2014!

By Air
Finland and Oulu can be easily reached by air; several airlines fly regularly to the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, the main airport of
Finland. The Oulu Airport is the second busiest airport in Finland with numerous daily connections from/to Helsinki, Riga and
Tampere. Information about the Oulu Airport (www.finavia.fi/en/oulu) and other airports in Finland and travel connections to
and from the airports is available on the website of Finavia (www.finavia.fi).

It is advisable to ask for student or youth fares to Oulu from travel agencies specialised in student and youth travel. E.g. STA
Travel and Kilroy Travels have many representatives all around the world. You should also ask for a flight ticket all the way
to Oulu, not only to e.g. Helsinki. This way the connecting flight might be cheaper.

Finnair has up to 10 regular daily air connections from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, SAS/Blue1 has up to 9 daily services from
Helsinki-Vantaa to Oulu and Norwegian Airlines has up to 4 daily flights from Helsinki-Vantaa to Oulu.

Low-cost Carriers
Some of the so-called low-fares airlines operate flights to Finland. Ryanair has regular services from Bremen, Frankfurt-
Hahn, London-Stansted, Milan-Bergamo and Riga to Tampere Airport (ca 200 km north-west of Helsinki and ca 500 km
south of Oulu). Air Finland has direct flights to Helsinki from many holiday destinations especially in the southern Europe.
Airberlin flies from Berlin and Dsseldorf to Helsinki and Easyjet has daily services between London-Gatwick and Helsinki.
The nearest Easyjet destination is Tallinn in Estonia. Wizz Air flies several times a week from Gdansk in Poland to Turku in
Southwestern Finland.

For more information on flight timetables and fares, please contact the respective airline or student travel agency, e.g.

Oulu Airport Oulu and within Oulu (Bus or Taxi)
N.B.! Bus lines, timetables from the airport to the Oulu city centre and within Oulu are being revised in summer 2014 and
thus cannot be provided. Bus timetables and other information can be currently obtained from www.linjakas.fi > English, but
this may change in summer, see www.oulunjoukkoliikenne.fi/oulu (in Finnish) and www.ouka.fi/oulu/english/public-transport
(in English).

However, there is and will be a regular local bus connection from the Oulu airport to the city centre. A single bus ticket costs
approx. 6 EUR (double price during night time, 23 - 04). Buses to the city centre run on weekday peak hours every 20
minutes from the Oulu airptport terminal bus stop, in weekday evenings every 30 minutes and at other times once in an
hour.

A single bus ticket within Oulu costs approx. 3.50 (double price in night time 23 - 04). There are and will be several bus
lines operating within the city centre and larger area of Oulu, providing good connections for commuters.
If you have a lot of luggage upon your arrvial it may be advisable to take a taxi. A taxi to downtown Oulu costs about 30 - 40
depending on the journey and time of the day. To order a taxi service in Oulu, please call by phone +358 600 30081, see
also www.oulunaluetaksi.fi/sivu/en.

By Train
You can also travel from Helsinki to Oulu by train. In this case you must first take the Finnair City Bus (6.30 EUR), or the
public regional buses 415, 451 or 615 or 615V (5.00 EUR) will take you from the Helsinki Airport to the Helsinki Central
Railway Station in ca. 30 minutes (buses leave approximately every 15 - 20 minutes). Finnair City Bus arrives on the Eliel
Square. The local bus 61 (approx. 3.00 EUR) will take you to the Tikkurila Railway Station in Vantaa (buses leave at peak
hours every 10 minutes, at other times with 20 - 60 min intervals). The bus journey to the Tikkurila Railway Station takes ca
20 min. All long haul trains towards Oulu will call both at Helsinki Central and Tikkurila Railway Stations. Further information
on bus connections to/from the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is available on the website of Finavia at
www.finavia.fi/en/helsinki-airport/to-and-from/bus-service/.

If you will arrive by a Ryanair flight to Tampere or Wizz Air flight to Turku a train will be the cheapest option to travel to Oulu.
In both Tampere Airport and Turku Airport you must first take a bus or a taxi to the railway station.

There are from ten to twelve trains a day from Helsinki to Oulu. The journey time from Helsinki to Oulu is ca 6 7 hours and
9 10 hours on the overnight trains. The Oulu Railway Station is in the very centre of the city. For train timetables and fares,
please see the VR website at www.vr.fi or call to VRs English phone service, tel. +358 9 2319 2902.
In the table below you can find prices of normal-priced train tickets (a seat reservation is included in all pre-purchased
tickets).

Journey Regional train Express train InterCity Pendolino
Helsinki-Oulu Not available Approx.: 70 EUR 75 EUR 80 EUR
You should also check the opening hours of the railway station booking offices on the VR website. In case the ticket office of
the station is closed before the departure of the train there is no surcharge for purchasing the ticket from the conductor on
the train. The normal commission for ticket purchases on board the trains is approx. 3 EUR and 6 EUR on Pendolino
services.

A student discount on the Finnish Railways is 50 %. Notice, however, that you are not entitled to the student discount on the
Finnish Railways until you have registered yourself with the Oulu University of Applied Sciences at the location of the
hosting school. You need to obtain a student card that entitles you to the discount on Finnish Railways (i.e. a student union's
card or a VR/Matkahuolto Student Card). Please notice that international student cards such as ISIC do not entitle to
discount on Finnish Railways!

By Bus
There are also 4 - 6 daily bus connections on the long haul buses from Helsinki to Oulu. On the buses the travel time is
remarkably longer and the fares higher than on the railways. For more information on long haul bus connections in Finland,
please see the Matkahuolto website at http://www.matkahuolto.fi/en. A normal-priced one-way ticket on an express bus from
Helsinki to Oulu costs approx. 100 EUR (journey time ca. 10 - 12 hours).

A student discount on the long haul buses in Finland is 50 % when the one-way journey is at least 80 km. You are not
entitled to a student discount on buses in Finland until you have registered yourself with the Oulu University of Applied
Sciences at the location of the hosting school. You need to obtain a student card that entitles you to the discount on long
haul buses (i.e. a student union's card or VR/Matkahuolto Student Card). Please notice that international student cards such
as ISIC do not entitle to discount on Finnish long haul buses!

Health Insurance Required from Third-Country Nationals Entering Finland for the Purposes of Studies in
an Educational Institution in Finland

The third-country nationals coming to Finland for studies are required to have an insurance that will cover the costs of health care. Third-
country nationals are persons who are not citizens of the European Union or citizens of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland (Aliens
Act 301/2004 46, Student directive of the EU 2004/114/EC). For those whose studies will last at least two years an insurance covering
medicine costs is enough. The insurance has to be valid upon arrival to Finland and should be issued by a reliable and solvent company or
institution.

Health insurance as a requirement for issuing a temporary residence permit

A foreign national who has been accepted into an educational institution in Finland as a student may be issued with a temporary residence
permit for the purposes of studies leading to a degree. Issuing a temporary residence permit requires that the foreign national has valid
insurance with a solvent and reliable company or institution covering medical treatment in Finland. A student must have insurance
cover when applying for a residence permit, as without it a residence permit cannot be granted.

Where the duration of the studies is two years or more, a student will usually be given a home municipality in Finland and is therefore entitled
to municipal health care services. The student must, however, have a private insurance to cover primarily the cost of medicines (in practice the
cover extends to doctors fees and costs of treatment and examination), up to 30,000 euro.

For studies of less than two years in duration, a student must have private insurance which primarily covers the costs of medical treatment up
to 100,000 euro.

Taking out insurance abroad

A foreign student applying for a residence permit for studies in Finland must have health insurance. The authorities cannot issue a permit
unless the person filing an application produces evidence that he or she has taken out insurance.

Insurance companies in many countries offer a range of insurances, varying in price and content and covering costs of medical treatment in
Finland. Prices for insurances that are valid for a year vary from a few hundred euros to over one thousand euros. The insurances available are
usually travel insurances.

In some countries the insurance companies cannot necessarily provide insurances covering the costs up to 100,000 euros. Insurances
described above are not available at all in some countries. However, international insurance companies offer insurance providing relatively
good coverage for a year at a time. At present, a foreign student cannot personally acquire private insurance from a Finnish insurance
company covering the treatment and costs that in Finland are part of municipal health care services and regarded as costs for medical
treatment covered by public health insurance. Further information on available insurances and acceptable insurance companies will be
available from the Finnish Embassies and also on our website www.oamk.fi/english you can find a list of possible insurance companies.

Period of validity of the insurance

The insurance must be valid for the period the foreign student studies at an educational institution in Finland. The period of validity of the
residence permit is bound by that of the insurance. A residence permit cannot be issued for a period exceeding the period of the insurance
cover

Examples of health insurances

Finnish insurance companies do not usually grant insurance to foreigners who are not permanent residents of Finland. However, Oulu
University of Applied Sciences has made an agreement together with few other higher education institutions in Finland. Together these schools
have been able to negotiate a package with the insurance company March Insurances. This package allows students to buy insurance from
March Insurances with lower price than regular customers. For further information, please visit the website:

You can also ask insurances from the following companies:
AON Students Insurance (www.students-insurance.eu/)
AXA PPP (www.axappphealthcare.co.uk/international-health-insurance)
International Student Insurance (www.internationalstudentinsurance.com/finland-student-insurance/)
Swisscare (www.swisscare.ch/plan_finland.html)
International Health Insurance (IHI) (www.ihi.com)
IngoNord (www.ingonord.fi/english/home/home.php)
ACS-AMI (www.acs-ami.com/en/acs/globe)
Bupa (www.bupa-intl.com)

Notice! This is not a comprehensive list of available insurances. Oulu UAS does not act as a solicitor on the behalf of the listed companies and
accepts no liability for their services or lack of them. Please check also the offers of your current insurance provider.
