WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
Our customer's are armed with anything from a leather-belted 1920's lathe to a full CNC arsenal. We have attempted
below to show the base level of equipment required to complete our kits. Without being told youll know already that
quality counts in the workshop and in general, He with the most toys, wins!.
Major Assets
A Centre Lathe, typically of at least 3 centre height (7 Swing) and 13 between centres. Screw cutting
facilities are essential for many of the kits.
A Pillar Drill, typically of at least drill capacity with a motor of at least hp.
A facility for Light Milling; a good vertical slide, bolted to your lathe's cross-slide, will suffice for all but a
few of the kits. However, if you do have a dedicated Milling Machine, your progress will be at a much faster
pace and a few of the project will require this. If you're in the market for one, we'd suggest a vertical mill of at
least 1 hp, 14 of X-travel and a speed range of 100 - 2,000 rpm.
Other Workshop Basics
Leaving aside the obvious paraphernalia, you'll need:
A good solid Bench Vice of say 4 capacity or better.
Micrometers and a 6 Vernier Calliper, the best you can afford. You should be able to determine down to
0.00025 (2 tenths) below an inch and 0.001 above an inch.
Dial Test & Dial Gauge Indicators, try for a DGI of at least travel and resolution of 0.0005. Go to
town on your DTI; our has a total travel of 0.009 and resolves to 0.00005 ( of a tenth). You'll pay about
60 for a famous brand.
A Surface Plate, perhaps not essential for every kit but sooner or later you'll need a standard surface. If you
have a flat bed lathe, you may get away with using it as a surface plate. Otherwise, a piece of plate glass or a
second hand or imported table are equally good. 10 x 12 should do it.
Taps, Dies, Drills & Reamers, You'll need taps for BA (8,6,4 & 2), BSF (1/4, 5/16 & 3/8), BSW (5/16 & 3/8)
and an some ME sizes (e.g. x 40tpi BSW) . You'll need dies for the larger sizes only (2BA to 3/8 BSW). If
you're biased towards Metric and UNF/UNC, its fine to substitute these. Buy Number drills or Metric
equivalents to support all of you taps. If you can find a set of machine reamers from 1/8 to 5/8 by 16ths,
you'll avoid a number of fine-boring exercises. A clever man solves a problem; a wise man avoids it - Albert
Einstein.
A Blowtorch, a few kits require silver soldering of components and many include silver steels that need
hardening. Buy propane, NOT butane.

Drawing & Construction Notes
This is an area where we feel we add significant value for the small workshop owner. In all humilitywe think we are
the best in the business by a long chalk!
Please note however that for the Universal Pillar Tool (UPT) and Versatile Dividing Head (VDH), George
Thomas book, Workshop Techniques, provides all of the necessary construction notes. Whilst Hemingway
drawings are included with the VDH projects, you will need to use the book for the UPT.
Materials - Our suppliers have been chosen on a basis of quality first.
Check the descriptions offered in our catalogue. In general, we aim to supply everything you will need to complete a
given project. You simply add your time, experience and ingenuity!
WHATS IN A HEMINGWAY KIT?
Castings
We now manage almost 400 patterns and core boxes! Both of the foundries that we use have been trading in the
UK Midland for over 130 years. All box work and core placing is completed by hand and the castings are poured into
greensand. After fettling, all castings are shot or bead blasted to improve their appearance. Defects can occur but
are generally caught at the foundry or by Hemingway. Please check your castings closely before you invest in their
machining. Do get in touch if you have any concerns. A level of surface defect is unavoidable but should not
encroach on a major datum.

Bar Stock
Hemingway Kits holds around 4 tonnes of bar materials, chiefly in imperial dimensions. We stock over 60 different
sections of steel, iron, brass, bronze, aluminium and Nylon ranging from 1/16 to 6 x 1 flats. A majority of
our steel is manufactured by British Steel (Corus, Tata). We always favour free cutting grades. Please, when your kit
arrives, check through the drawings and plan your use of material. It is not only the profit motive that causes us to
limit lengths, we are also conscious that it will be inefficient for customers to have to machine or saw off large
amounts of material to arrive at a finished dimension!
Fasteners
We hold over 60 different varieties of heads, threads and lengths. A majority of our kits call for imperial fasteners,
ranging from 8BA to 3/8 BSW. For this reason we only stock these imperial fasteners and a few metric sizes. Sitting
here in Britain, this seems reasonable; customers have built up a stock of taps and dies that support this outlook.
However, sitting in Germany or America, our position may not seem reasonable! Doubtless you will want to translate
imperial threads into Course and Fine Metric, UNC and UNF and this will not affect the success of your project.
Gears
For all tools that require gears, they are supplied with the kit in blank form. That is to say the teeth themselves are
fully finished leaving you to complete a few features such as threads, bores and support diameters. The worm and
worm wheel pairs required to complete the dividing tools and rotary tables are intended by the designers to be
generated as helicals to a pressure angle of 14 . They require dedicated assets and, with low volume runs, may
seem unusually expensive. On the positive side however, the quality of our UK sources is indeed first class.
CNC Sheet Material
The Worden Mk 3 Tool and Cutter Grinder is a truly great product, made economically possible through the flexibility
of CNC processing. The gauge of the pressings is around 1/8, affording excellent rigidity in action. Having large
dedicated pressings on your bench may well be a novelty. Please remember that many of industry's worst hand
injuries come from handling unprepared sheet materials! Wear gloves and file off sharp edges as a very first step. If
you rely on off-hand tool grinding today, you should consider the Worden Mk3?
Other Stock Items
Hemingway Kits arrive complete! To back this claim we hold a huge variety of often difficult to find items. Along
with bearings, bushes, springs and arbors, we have more exotic items such as gun-sight graticules, blended woollen
felt, music wire and 5-core electrical cable. Wherever practical, we source directly from well-established UK
manufacturers.
With our investments in top-end CAD systems, digital photography and colour laser printing, we have raised our
designer original works to the latest industry levels. Drawings are generated from digital solid models, which are used
to check all assemblies for fit and function. Isometric, sectional and detail views are included, together with a full bill of
materials and machining sequences for any complex operations. Our construction notes, generally composed by the
designer, allow you to understand the importance of each set-up and how it fits within the overall plan. Typically, the
notes include photographs, which are invaluable for describing an operation.

Small Hole Boring Tools HK1010
Inherently centered from the top slide, these tools allow
boring to be started from just a 1/4" drilled hole. Tension,
induced by the pushrod, makes even the smallest tool
surprisingly rigid.
There are two boring bars of each size, 1/4", 5/16" and 3/8"
diameter. One bar for boring/facing the other for internal
screw cutting/recessing. The kit includes 3 iron casting for
the tool blocks, steel, fasteners, HSS cutting tools, a long
series drill (needed to machine the boring bars) drawings
and construction notes.
Between Centres Boring Bar HK1020
These three Boring Bars (
13) will meet the needs of most small engineering
workshops.
Each bar has a dedicated micrometer, which can be
accurately positioned over the end of the cutting tool to
allow precise measurement and advancement by 0.001
increments. Supplied as a kit of easily machined parts
including FCMS bar, gunmetal micrometer castings, steel
for the carriers, HSS cutting tools, drawing and instructions.
x 10, x 13 and 1 x
Speed Increaser HK1690
The majority of milling machines available to small work-
shop owners have a top spindle speed of less than 3,000
rpm. For most general milling purposes this is fine, but if
you use cutters with a diameter of less than 2mm, this is
not adequate. These smaller cutters are stock-in-trade for
the clock maker for profiling, crossing out and engraving in
brass.
The Speed Increaser, designed by Dick Stephen, is a simple,
oil filled epicyclic gear box, offering a 3X speed increase. It
can be quickly fitted to any spindle to give an output speed
of up to 9,000 rpm. Please note that the design provides an
output rotation OPPOSITE to input rotation. Consequently,
you will need to be able to reverse your machine's spindle to
use conventional cutters. Order our reversing switch (SP
1018) if required.
Along with drawings (metric only) and construction notes,
the kit comes complete with all necessary material including
gears, bearings, steel, bronze, and fasteners.

HK1020 60.90
HK1690 Kit with MT2 arbor 94.70
The virtues of parting-off from the rear of the cross-slide
need hardly be mentioned. The casting bolts down solidly
to the cross-slide and supports a steel turret which can be
indexed precisely by 180. The kit contains material for
you to produce either George Thomas' original turret,
holding two parting-off blades (SP 1013 & SP 1014) or the
alternative Riley turret (pictured), which accepts one
parting-off blade (SP 1013) and one standard inverted
lathe tool.
The kit includes casting, fasteners and springs, together
with the steel required for either the GHT or Riley turret.
Suitable for the Myford Super 7, ML7 and ML10 lathes this
item can be modified in height to suit many lathes up to
3 centre height.
The Rear Tool Post, one of George Thomas' most elegant
designs, has become a vital addition to smaller lathes for
the past 30 years. Hemingway is now pleased to provide a
new version, suitable for larger lathes.
Suitable for lathes with up to around 6 centre height, the
kit includes the main casting and all material to complete a
substantial Rear Tool Post for your Boxford, South Bend,
Atlas, Chester, Harrison, Myford geared-head,
Colchester, Warco, Grizzly. plus many more. The Larger
Rear Tool Post is designed to engage with either a single T
slot or a pair of tapped holes towards the rear of your cross
slide. Whilst the turret is designed for a 3/32" parting
blade (SP 1013) and an additional inverted tool, it is really
a blank-canvas for any variety of insert blade holder or
form tool.

Gibraltar Tool Post HK1090
Designed by Tubal Cain, who spent a lifetime in the
engineering industry and was well known for his contribu-
tions to the Model Engineer.
This is a substantial, no-nonsense tool post fitting directly
onto the boring tables of the Myford Series 7 lathes, and is
very suitable for taking heavy cuts or when working with
an overhung tool. It can accept industrial HSS and
Carbide Insert tools up to , a feature that affords
additional rigidity and economy.
We supply the castings together with drawings, construc-
tion notes and all necessary materials.
Hand Turning Rest HK1330
It is often preferable to use a hand turning rest, if only to
finish a component. Thus the change from using the
compound slide to a hand rest should be quick and
efficient. In this design the one handle serves not only to
lock the casting to the Myford Series 7 lathe bed but also
to lock the tool rest. The complete rest can be fitted or
removed from the lathe in a matter of seconds.
Three castings are supplied, the lower or base casting in
aluminium, so as not to mark the lathe bed, the other two
in cast iron. Fasteners, springs and all steel sections are
included together with drawings and construction notes.
You'll need a No. 505 Woodruff Cutter (SP 1000) to
complete this kit.
Retracting Tool Holder HK1250
George Thomas' Retracting Tool Holder readily clamps to a
4 tool turret or a Dickson tool holder. Although propor-
tioned to suit a 3 lathe, it performs perfectly in much
larger equipment. The principal use is for external screw
cutting. At the end of a threading pass the little ball handle
is flicked backwards, whereupon the tool retracts clear of
the thread. It is unnecessary to wind back the feed handle
of either the cross or top-slides, thus the exact position of
the tool is never lost or forgotten. At the start of the next
pass, the little ball handle is pushed forwards and the tool
is positively returned to its former position.
Our kit includes full drawings and construction notes
together with all necessary materials. A 60 degree
dovetail cutter (SP 1001) will be required to machine the
dovetail slides.
Designed by G H Thomas as a modification to the Myford
Super 7 Top Slide, a full kit for this prized attachment is
now available! For those who haven't seen one in action,
this upgrade provides truly significant advantages in both
productivity and accuracy.
The small ball handle causes the complete Top Slide
(with tool) to retract by around 5/32 (4mm). This
greatly facilitates the cutting of both external and
internal threads. It is also valuable for those final
finishing cuts on both diameters and faces.
A much larger micrometer (100 x 0.001 gradua-
tions) dial is used, which can be zeroed and
positively locked.

Gear & Retracting Top Slide Attachment
Myford Super 7
HK1240
Designed and patented by Kenneth Hart ("Martin Cleeves")
in August 1970 and described in his definitive work,
"Screw Cutting in the Lathe". This simple mechanism
provides retraction for both external and internal thread
cutting together with a unique 'swing' feature, allowing it
to be flipped clear of the job for gauging those final
internal cuts on a bore or thread.
The Hemingway Kits design for this item is suitable for a
number of lathes up to around 5" Centre Height and
importantly, it can swing clear of the fairly tall 7/16" BSF
tool post of the Myford 7 range . To improve integrity, the
swinging arm is milled from a steel block rather than
fabricated. Extra work perhaps but the rigidity of the
finished item fully justifies this approach.
The kit includes all of the necessary bar materials and
fasteners together with the solid model CAD drawing set
and, for interest, a copy of Mr. Hart's original patent.
Unfortunately construction notes are not yet available for
this project but the work is quite straight forward.

This design, by Edgar Westbury, is thoroughly well conceived. Whilst many filing rests mount onto the bed of the
lathe, by far the best location is on the cross slide where the saddle can be easily traversed to set the file's safe edge
accurately along the job. The conventional screw-jack approach used for bed mounted rests cannot however be
shoehorned into the space over the cross slide but this design, with its unique scissor lift action, can be sets with
perfect precision to within 0.001".

Hexagons and squares can be quickly and accurately "milled" on boiler fittings and fasteners before parting off.
The filing rest can also be used for the production of D-bits and single lip milling cutters, which are sometimes a
little difficult to measure up properly if they happen to be tapered or otherwise varied in diameter. Also, in concert
with a Headstock Dividing Attachment, tangential cams for model engines will become significantly less stressful!
This item can be fitted to the cross slide of virtually any lathe of around 3 1/4" centre height and upwards. The kit
includes all necessary materials together drawings and Westbury's notes for both construction and use.
Centre-Height Gauge HK1820
Based on G H Thomas' elegant and simple design for
setting tools at centre height relative to lathe bed (upper
knife) or cross slide (lower knife). The post can be revolved
to the best position for setting most lathe tools including
boring bars and parting blades. This gauge is suitable for
lathes up to 6 centre-height.
The kit includes drawings and construction notes together
with the iron base casting, bar material and ground,
hardenable flat stock for the knives.
Small Precision Boring Head
The Small Precision Boring Head, designed by Mr. G. H.
Thomas, is a superb tool and a popular accessory. Suitable
for bores up to 2, this tool can be run from either the
lathe or miller. Machined entirely from steel, well balanced
and suitable for high speed working. The feed screw ( x
40tpi) is fitted with a zero setting index which can be
graduated in division of 0.001 of diameter. Our kit
includes drawings and constructions notes, steel, fasten-
ers, and the hardened and ground Morse Taper shank,
threaded for a 3/8 BSW draw bar. You'll need a 60
dovetail cutter (SP 1001) to complete the slides.

HK1050 Large Boring Head
Designed by Dr J. Beddard. A substantial boring head that
is capable of boring or fly-cutting up to 6" nominal
diameter. Based on a robust, well balanced phosphor
bronze casting, with piston slide adjustment and positive
locking, this new boring head is ideal for use on the
milling machine (indeed a milling machine is required for
its construction). The tool will also swing over the bed of
Myford 3 centre lathes.
This well presented kit includes the Bronze casting, ground
Morse Taper arbor, HSS tool bit and all other materials
required to complete the tool and its cutter bars.

HK1110 Basic Knurling Tool
The Basic Knurling Tool is a sound investment; from its first
use you'll wonder why you put up with anything less?
The tool has a capacity of 3/16 - 2" and the knurls can
be traversed to within a 1/4" of the chuck. A single pass will
suffice in all but the toughest steels. The kit includes all
necessary material together with drawings and construc-
tion notes.
Knurling Tools
Have mercy on your lathe! Conventional, fixed-arm tools set up almost unbearable strain on the spindle bearings
of the light lathe. Moreover, the finished knurl produced in this way is seldom satisfactory. Neither of the
following designs create these strains; allowing the two knurls to 'float' on the work. Each employs two sturdy
cheek plates which steady the arms enormously when traversing the work. Each design accept straight (SP 1008)
or diamond (SP 1007) pattern knurls which can be ordered separately and can quickly be changed from one
pattern to the other.

Precision Filing Rest HK 2410
Filing rests may strike you as old fashioned - from the era
when none but the wealthy had milling machines?
However, a good deal of the milling required in the small
workshop consists of shaping hexagons, squares, and
simple forms of cams on cylindrical work, and for this
purpose, there is much to be said for a filing rest, which
can be rigged in the lathe in as little time as it takes to
change a tool and requires no more in the way of addi-
tional equipment than a couple of ordinary files. It has the
same advantage as an overhead-driven milling fixture or
even a Quick-Step Mill in enabling work to be operated on
in situ without removing it from the lathe chuck or
between centres.

This design closely follows that of the 'Marlco' device
available until the late 60's. This item became a standard in
the toolroom; allowing operators to feel the knurl being
generated and adjust the pressure to both arms using a
fine feed lever. This is a great advantage for jobs in
aluminium and brass where care must be taken not to tear
the material. It is also child's-play to run knurls of identical
depth on a quantity of parts.
The proportions of the original tool have been reduced to
a size more suitable to the lighter lathe and the capacity
ranges from 3/16" to 2 1/2". The kit arrives with all
necessary materials, drawings and construction notes.
HK1160 Spherical Turning Tool
Makes turning ball handles a genuine pleasure. This type
of accessory was favoured by both G. H. Thomas and J. A.
Radford. The design is of all steel construction, with
bronze bushes and thrust washers supporting a ground
main shaft. This tool will cut radii, spheres and hollows
from nothing to around 2".
Suitable for use on lathes from 3" to 6" centre heights. Kit
includes steel, bushes, fasteners, " HSS tool, drawing
and instructions. A very satisfying project and tool.

Tailstock Die Holder
An ingenious design from Mr. J. C. Payne, patent holder
for the Quick-Step Mill. What is unusual here is that the
Die Holder is prevented from rotating by a double-cone
clutch, similar in action to a car's synchroniser. Moving the
handle either side of its mid position causes the clutch to
engage. Relax pressure on the handle and the Die Holder
will again rotate and thus the die stops cutting. Very useful
when screwing up to a shoulder. This tool will hold all
common die diameters (1 5/16", 1", 13/16" and 5/8").
Taper Turning Attachment Mk2 HK1320
With a nominal 10" working length, the Taper Turning
Attachment Mk2 is conventional in so much as the design
follows accepted practice. It does, however, have some
design features which we believe have not been generally
available.
The attachment bolts to the rear of the lathe bed. Myford
supply their 7 Series lathes with holes already drilled and
tapped to accept such an accessory but adaptation of
other beds may be practical. The slotted link is bolted to
the rear face of the cross-slide, thus the whole of the
boring table area is free for use at all times. Once the
attachment has been fitted to the lathe, it is left perma-
nently in situ, and the lathe can be made ready for taper turning in a very short space of time. All that is needed is
to release the cross-slide feed screw, bring the top slide into a suitable cutting position, clamp the slotted link to
the guide bar and the setting up is now complete.
Accurate tapers, as required for say Morse Taper tooling, demand the exact position of the guide bar to be
established. A revised precision setting micrometer, that enables quick, extremely accurate angular settings is
detailed in the drawings. The kit includes LM 25 Aluminium castings for the main bracket and slotted link and a
phosphor bronze casting for the slide. You will need facilities to mill the 12 long main bracket. All steel parts,
including precision ground flats are provided, together with fasteners, drawings and instructions. The accessory
costs well under half that of a conventional, off-the-shelf product, not having the advantages of this new design.
Quick Change Tool Holder HK 1100
This rigid design accepts tools up to " sq. tools which can
be reground on the Worden while still in their holders.
Rapid and repeatable tool height setting. Drawings show
holders for plain turning, boring and parting-off tools.
Suits any lathe from an ML10 upwards. Great economy,

HK1230 Keyway Slotting Attachment
Designed by Dore, this attachment is rigidly constructed
yet light and quick to fit. A sturdy aluminium casting
(doesn't mark your boring table) fitted with substantial
bronze bushes accepts a ground steel ram carrying the
cutting tool. The casting is fixed to the boring table using 2
bolts in a common tee slot. Angular setting can be made
by protractor and a setting dowel quickly returns the ram
to the parallel position. The main casting is suitable for
lathes with a centre height of 3" to 3". The kit includes
2 aluminium castings, steel, bushes, tools, fasteners,
drawings and full instructions.
HK 1232 - For larger lathes up to around 6 centre height, an
aluminium raising block is offered to provide a maximum
height from base to ram centre of 3 3/8.
HK1210 Graduating Tool
For 'engraving' scales or indices on dials and faces held in
the lathe or dividing head. The cutting tool, held at centre
height in the ground steel ram, is easily stroked backwards
and forwards by the handle. The length of line cut is
controlled by a 3 position index drum (units, five's and
tens). The ram has tool positions at its front and back
allowing engraving to be completed either along the axis
of the lathe, across it or indeed at any angle. The kit
includes steel, precision bushes, fasteners, spring, HSS
tool, drawing and instructions.
HK1220 Spotting Tool
Perfect for accurately marking out work held in the lathe
chuck. Fit the Spotting Tool into your tool holder and bring
it up to the work. Crank the handle and the centre drill will
'spot' the work with a precise centre - ready for drilling.
Index the lathe mandrel and repeat the process to
accurately mark out backplates, cylinder covers etc. Suits

aluminium raising block is offered to provide a maximum
height from base to ram centre of 3 3/8.
Suits
any lathe from 3" centre height upwards. Kit includes steel,
porous bronze bushes, needle thrust races, BS2 centre
drill, drawing and instructions.

turning between centres. The Improved Topslide will accept all of your existing toolpost fixtures including
Dickson QC systems and indexing 4 tool turrets. For set-over screw cutting and taper work it is a simple matter to
replace this item with the standard Myford offering.
Our kit includes the 2 main iron castings and all other material, drawings and construction notes. The Improved
Topslide makes use of the existing Myford feed screw, micrometer dial, handle and nut so your progress in
completing the kit should be fairly quick. You'll need a 60 dovetail cutter (SP 1001).
must be the ultimate mechanism for this application; ensuring that the scriber arm can be smoothly set without
fear of any subsequent movement.
The kit arrives with our latest drawings and build notes, together with all necessary material for both items and 4
spare scriber points. You'll need a tap for 5/32x 40tpi (SP 1026) and a trusted 6 ruler.
Even in the age of the digital height gauge, a Scribing
Block and Rule Holder are indispensable for marking-out.
A new 6 (150mm) steel rule is accurate to 0.004
(0.1mm) from any graduation to its zero-end (BS
4372:1968) and typically the first 2-3 inches are gradu-
ated down to 1/64ths (0.5mm). These two items allow
you to hold a rule vertically and click a scriber perfectly
into a graduation. Hey presto; you've marked out
27/32nds without a second thought!

of all of the fixtures I have made for the Myford lathe,
none has given me more satisfaction than this new

of cut that is possible has to be seen to be believed.
Radford's criticism of the Myford item includes its poor
level of support for the tool, the rigidity of its round base,
the locking bolts that distort the gib strip setting and the
difficulties of getting the tool to clear the tailstock when

Grinding Spindle
This Grinding Spindle employ disc-spring loaded races to
take up all bearing clearance whilst providing for thermal
expansion as the spindle warms up. Maximum speed for
the grinding spindle is 20,000 rpm in grease or 25,000
rpm in oil which provides for the smallest of bore grinding
applications. The designer's application was for a 4"
wheel running at 4,800 rpm and the pulleys and arbors
are based on this.
The kit includes all necessary steel for the spindle together
with "magneto style" angular contact bearings, disc-
springs, lipped oil seals, drawings and construction notes.
The pulleys are designed to accept 5mm Bond-a-Band
belting which can be ordered separately (SP 1010).
HK2150 Fitted Draw Bar
Doubtless you use a draw bar already to secure tapered
tooling to a machine spindle. Many of us settle for a length
of threaded bar, a washer and a nut. Beyond aesthetics,
there are several sources of annoyance with this approach
including finding the hole in the arbor, finding the spanner
for the nut and breaking all the rule of decency by striking
a threaded shaft!
The Fitted Draw Bar is a joy both to make and use. A pair of
guide bushes allow the bar to find the threaded hole
without fuss. A large diameter iron casting is provided for
the knob, which can now be tightened by hand. When the
job is complete you'll only need to loosen the knob a turn
or two and strike it.
Measuring from the back end of an engaged arbor to the back of your spindle, this kit will suit lengths up to 12"
with guide bushes up to 1". The 1/2" bar will accommodate an arbor thread up to 1/2" BSW/M12 (including
3/8" BSW/M10). The kit includes all necessary material, drawings and construction notes.
Where the exact diameter, surface finish and concentricity
of a hole is important on a component, we reach for a
reamer. The classic routine requires us to first centre drill
then continue with larger sized drills. With say 0.050" to
go, we swap to a single point boring tool to ensure the
hole generated is concentric with the axis of the lathe - a
job that can't be trusted to a flexible drill. With somewhere
between 0.005" and 0.020" left on diameter, we swap the
tailstock drill chuck for a Morse taper reamer, reduce the
speed and feed in gradually. A perfect hole? ....almost
certainly not!
A sharp, common-or-garden H7 class reamer will cut a
1/4" hole to a diameter of 0.02500" to 0.2506" with a
near-ground finish and of near-perfect concentricity and
parallelism. But here's the rub (pun intended!).... unless
HK2210 Floating Reamer Holder
your lathe's tailstock is aligned to the lathe's major axis within somewhat less than 0.0002", it cannot create that
elegant hole. An almost immeasurable offset and/or angular mismatch can leave the hole oversized, barrelled,
oval and scarred.
The answer has been known for over 100 years. Floating Reamer Holders are essential equipment on even the
world's most carefully set machine tools, including CNC stations costing considerably more than the average
house. For one reason or another however, they are not generally found in the small workshop?
The design provided here is both elegant and sound; producing that ideal reamed hole from a tailstock barrel
offset by up to 0.015" and angularly mis-aligned by up to 5. The reamer will track the bored hole, removing just
those vital slivers of material.
The kit includes plans and comprehensive construction notes together with all necessary material to complete
holder but not the MT sleeves. The 1" MT sleeves, available separately, are traditionally used on capstan and
auto lathes to hold Morse taper tooling. They are ground all over and hardened with only a thin case that can be
machined away to suit our Floating Reamer Holder.

Sensitive Tailstock Drilling Attachment HK 2420
This is a very useful device for the small workshop -
relieving the stress we all face when drilling small holes at
high speed! The attachment consists of a hollow Morse
Taper shank supporting a ground ram with a small
capacity chuck. The chuck supplied with this kit is a
German Rhm unit with a nominal capacity of 5/32" - a
very well made item, ideal for small diameter drills and
taps.
A lever handle operates the ram through a linkage giving
just over 1" of travel and offers lots of feel with miniature
drills - something that is absent using the standard
tailstock barrel. This attachment should reduce the
occurrence of drill breakages as one can better monitor
the drill's progress and quickly back the drill out to clear
swarf. Tapping (up to 2BA/M5) is also a delight since the
chuck will self-feed once the tap engages with the job. The
attachment can be rotated in the tailstock barrel to
provide either vertical or horizontal alignment.
Along with drawings and construction notes, the kit
contains all of the necessary material to complete this
attachment.

The Westbury Dividing Head (WDH) can be likened to a scale Myford Dividing Head but complete with a raising
block and 360 swivelling base. Using the overarm steady, the attachment will accept jobs up to a diameter of
3. If you require more than this, you can also order the Versatile Dividing Head Milling Kit (HK 1530) to provide
a separate tailstock and adaptor plates to accept jobs of up to 6 1/8.
The WDH spindle arrangement is particularly well conceived. The components form a separate cartridge which
can be quickly released and reversed in the main housing for axial and radial work on the lathe. Similarly, the
banjo assembly supporting the direct or indirect indexing components can be re-positioned easily to suit the job
in hand.
Using just the direct indexing facility (HK 2130), the attachment accepts Myford 5/8 bore change wheels with
1/8 keyways. If you happen to have a standard set of these you'll be able to index a huge number of variations. If
you can only rustle up a 50t and 60t gear you can still manage to index 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 50 and
60 divisions enough to suit virtually any application short of gear cutting. Then, by adding the indirect indexing
components (HK 2135), there are no limitations to the number of divisions that can be struck.
Whilst suitable for any lathe or mill we have designed in a number of features which Myford lathe owners will
appreciate:
The mounting holes are spaced to suit the Myford cross and vertical slides.
Mounted on the cross slide, the centre heights (3) are a perfect match.
The spindle is detailed the Myford 1 1/8 thread and pilot and a MT2 taper so will accept your chucks,
faceplates, collets and arbors without adaptors.
Thousands will attest that this is also one of those truly satisfying, landmark projects with many finely crafted
examples attracting gold medals at exhibitions throughout the world. This project has now been completely
redrawn on our 3D system but you will need a copy of Mr. Thomas book Workshop Techniques (BK 1001) with
copious notes and photographs for construction and use.
HK150X Versatile Dividing Head (VDH)
Commercial dividing heads often find disfavour among
Model Engineers because they do not always fulfill the
varied needs of the smaller workshops. In this design,
consideration has been given not only to the wide range of
possible uses of the VDH but also to the simplification of
construction. In this context it may be mentioned that this
dividing head generates its own division plates to a very
high order of accuracy. The dimensions are such that all
components can be machined on a lathe of minimum
3 centre height.
In use it will be mounted principally on the cross-slide or
vertical slide. Since the spindle bore for the VDH is
machined in situ on the lathe cross-slide, an exact centre
height match is achieved, essential for accurate cross
holes, keyways and polygonal bar work.
Simple Dividing is by means of a spring loaded plunger
engaging any of the 24 holes in the face of the main
wheel. Squares, hexagons, keyway cutting and tap fluting
will probably be done by this method. Indirect Dividing is
by means of the 60:1 worm/wheel and division plates. Just
two division plates will allow most likely divisions and
angular spacing to be obtained. Where prime numbers or
indeed any division outside the range of the two plates are
required, the Micro-Attachment gives capabilities
down to 1/100th of a degree!
HK 1500 - The Full Kit containing all material necessary to complete the Versatile
Dividing Head including; 2 iron castings, 2 worms, 2 worm wheels, 3 division
plate blanks, 33 fasteners, 3 springs, 2 stub drills and 20 different sections of
FCMS, PGMS, Brass and Silver Steel Bar.
HK 1501 - The Basic Kit, contains the material necessary to build the VDH to index
solely from the 24 holes that are pre-drilled in the main wheel.
HK 1502 The Basic to Full Upgrade Kit, contains the additional material to
convert the Basic VDH to the Full VDH.
HK 1510 - 4 aluminium face plate casting for the VDH spindle.
HK 1505 - Essential items ONLY: castings (2), gears (2), worms (2), division plate
blanks (3), springs and stub drills.
HK 1232 - Aluminium raising block casting. For fitment to the cross-slide of
larger lathes, to provide a maximum base to centre height for the VDH of 3 3/8.
Westbury Dividing Head
Edgar Westbury was of course a true pioneer of both
miniature IC engines and dedicated tooling for the small
workshop. In 1963 he developed a multi-functional
milling attachment similar to the popular Potts Universal
Milling Attachment of the time. Whilst Hemingway have
the original foundry patterns for both of these classic
devices, with the advent of the Quick-Step Mill we feel
there is no real market for either.
One of the optional attachments for the Westbury
assembly however, almost an afterthought, was a set of
components called the swivelling quill holder. We saw
potential for a device based on the 5 main castings here
and the more we toiled at the CAD screen, the more
potential we could see!

Set-over Centre
The turning of tapers is one of the more important lathe
processes undertaken in the workshop. For those who
have much of this work to do on a repetitive basis, the
expense of a taper turning attachment, such as
Hemingways HK 1320, will be justified. In default, long
tapers can be machined by setting over the tailstock and
supporting the work on centres during the turning
operation.
There is an understandable reluctance to disturb the
tailstock setting once it has been set to turn work perfectly
parallel. However, the tailstock itself need not be set-over
if this adjustable centre is employed.
The kit contains material, drawings and instructions
including formulae for calculating the required off-set.

Division Plate assembly from your VDH.
HK 1496 - This Full Kit includes the Micro-Attachment and Division
Plate parts.
HK2135 Indirect Indexing Upgrade Kit
This kit includes the additional drawings, notes and
material to upgrade the Westbury Dividing Head to a full
60:1 dividing head. Pure and simple!
The bill of material includes the worm and wheel, a single
iron casting, 3 dividing plate blanks and all supporting
sections and fasteners. Unlike GHT's Versatile Dividing
Head there is no second worm provided so the drilling of
division plates must be achieved using change wheels and
hand methods. A bit of ingenuity will pay dividends!
HK2133 WDH - Myford Headstock Adapter
As proposed by G H Thomas for the Myford Dividing Head,
these additional components will allow the Westbury
Dividing Head to be cantilevered from the back of the
Myford spindle. This provides a perfect means for graduat-
ing dials held in the lathe or completing complex milling
operations with your Quick-Step Mill.
The kit includes all necessary material, drawings and notes
to attach the WDH to Myford's Super 7, ML7 or ML10
lathes (5/8" bore models, with and without gearboxes).
HK2131 WDH - 48 Tooth Change Wheel
As you will see from the standard Myford Change Wheel chart included with HK 2130, additional options are
available with a 48T wheel. You will find that this special wheel can remain on your Westbury Dividing Head for
95% of jobs.

Westbury Dividing Head - Direct Indexing
As discussed, this device will accept Myford change
wheels which, having been accurately hobbed, will
provide a very simple and precise mechanism for handling
a wide variety of divisions.
Along with drawings and construction notes, the kit
includes 4 iron and 1 bronze casting together with all
necessary free cutting and ground steel sections, fasteners
and springs. The project can be completed entirely on the
lathe and vertical slide.

Headstock Dividing Attachment - Myford 7 Series
The attachment uses the lathe mandrel "bull wheel" for
indexing, for which we supply a suitable worm. Taking
approximately one minute to fix to the lathe, this attach-
ment has proved to be of great interest to both amateur
and professional horologists for wheel cutting, graduat-
ing and indexing work held in the lathe mandrel.

A simple casting bolts to Myford Series 7 saddle, allowing long, small diameter work to be turned accurately.
Designed by Mr. D. Broadley (MBE). the tool is essentially a traveling steady which accepts loose brass bushes,
reamed in situ, for diameters up to 3/8. The kit includes all necessary materials.
Cross Drilling Jig/Fixture
Precise cross drilling remains a hallmark of fine work. This
versatile jig is simple to construct and offers many inherent
advantages. Whilst this item can be used as a valuable jig
on your mill or drill table; it's first love is as a fixture on the
lathe! The main casting is machined directly on the
topslide of a Myford Series 7 lathe, guaranteeing the
accurate location of the staggered V" groove. Shafts
from 1/8" to 1" can be securely accommodated and
drilled (or bored, milled. tapped, reamed) from the
headstock. Angular cross drilling is achieved just as
simply. A methodology is explained for simultaneously
drilling shafts and collars on centre. Our kit consisting of
an iron casting, steel, fasteners, drawing and instructions.
We invite you to kiss goodbye to off-centre embarrass-
ments.
Most model engineers only require a Rotary Table to
quickly and efficiently round the ends of coupling rods
and similar components. Worm gearing is not required,
being too slow in operation. Positive stops are, however,
vital to prevent the cutter exceeding its intended limits. G
H Thomas' design offers a small compact Rotary Table of
3, having a substantial bearing area. Positive stops
are provided to limit angular movement. The dimensions
of the cast iron base enable easy mounting onto the lathe
cross-slide or vertical-slide. Our kit includes the iron base
casting, close grained extruded iron for the table, together
will all necessary steel and fasteners.

The 1" wide jaws open to 1" to accept flat or cylindrical work. The vice's iron base is cast with an integral 4" long
tenon so that it can be securely held in a larger bench vice. The kit arrives with all necessary material, drawings and
construction notes for this hugely useful platform.
Swivelling Machine Vice
This vice is of particular value to owners of small milling
and shaping machines. It stands just 2 3/8 high, winning
at least an inch of precious daylight over commercial
items of comparable rigidity. The jaws are 2 wide,
opening to 2 and the sliding jaw is of box form (think
Alfred Herbert), to minimise distortion under load.
Swiveling 360, the vice can be accurately set to any angle.
The base dimensions are 4 by 6, allowing a wide
choice of tenon and bolt positions. The kit includes 3 iron
castings along with all fasteners, steel, bronze, drawings
and construction notes. You'll need a 60 dovetail cutter
(SP 1001).
HK1370
Small Vice
If you have ever struggled to position a delicate compo-
nent in an oversized vice you will find this to be a very
useful addition. The jaws are 1" wide, 5/8" deep and
open to 1". The entire vice is just 4 1/8" long, 2 " wide
and 1 3/8" high. Suggested by Harold Hall, there is an
interesting thrust arrangement to ensure that an even
load is maintained. The fixing hole positions will particu-
larly suit Myford owners but would equally suit any drill,
lathe or mill.
The kit includes iron castings for the body and sliding jaw
and all supporting material together with drawings and
construction notes.

Here we offer a Rotary Table of the same basic dimensions as
George Thomas' design but with the inclusion of a 60:1
worm and wheel. The worm box is retained in the base by
a single pad-bolt and can be readily removed for simple
tommy-bar operations (see photo). Designed with ease of
construction in mind, the Geared Rotary Table is at home on
both the cross-slide and vertical slide. Our kit includes close
grained iron bar for the table and base, gears, fasteners,
drawings and notes.
Robust alloy castings, easily machined on the lathe or
miller. Design allows three faces to be used, normal angle
plates have only two. Note substantial wall thickness -
particularly suitable for jig work on the Universal Pillar
Tool, the vertical slide, the boring table or on the miller.
Specially designed to suit your milling machine or
to extend the capacity of your cross slide. It
provides for mounting of long components such as
connecting rods for locos up to 5" gauge, for
fluting operations and any other long pieces where
well spaced support is desired. Both faces are
without cast slots, this is deliberate, it is left to the
user to drill/tap suitable holes where necessary.
Supplied as an alloy casting.

HK2200 Quick-Set Face & Angle Plate
A faceplate provides the ultimate versatility in accepting
irregularly shaped jobs for boring and facing. But oh don't
we wince when we know that a component requires this
treatment! The conventional faceplate was conceived with
radial slots; a very poor layout since virtually all faceplate
work needs manoeuvring in an X-Y direction. The slots on
the 8 Quick-Set Faceplate are arranged prismatically to
allow work to be accurately set and clamped without fuss.
The cunning arrangement of slots provides perfect balance,
with the plate's centre of gravity sitting exactly on centre.
The faceplate is suitable for lathes with a pilot diameter of
up to 1.

As in so many fields of human endeavour, suitable tools
are a prerequisite to progress. Once the sideline of cutlers,
instrument making has a long and distinguished history
with elite craftsmen working hand-in-hand with sur-
geons, chemists, physicists, astronomers and industrialist
of every flavour to develop the equipment necessary to
analyse results then exploit new scientific findings.
Within the instrument maker's workshop, highly prized
manual skills are developed over many, many years. Filing,
sawing, lapping, chasing, honing, scraping and polishing
small parts to within infinitesimal tolerances to create
world-changing devices.

HK2230 Westbury Boring & Facing Head
This highly versatile fixture was deemed to be indispens-
able by E T Westbury. Mounted on the mandrel, the head
provides an additional dovetailed slide moving perpendic-
ularly to the lathe's main axis. Originally designed for the
Myford 7 Series lathes, the head can be fitted to any lathe
with a spindle pilot diameter of up to 1 5/8. A bed
mounted interceptor can be engaged to automatically
advance the slide by 0.005 per revolution.
Powered Facing In this mode, the job is mounted on the
lathe's cross slide and the cutter block advances automati-
cally across it's face. Working for example at 55 rpm, the
head takes around 10 minutes to complete a full 5 face,
leaving the job perfectly square with a ultra-fine surface
finish.
Boring and Flycutting With tools mounted in any of 5
locations, the head will bore accurately to 6 on the
lathe or milling machine.
Eccentric Turning Accurate to 0.001 with almost no
set-up time! Cranks, sheaves and any job that will clamp to
the slide can be offset with the large graduated dial then
locked for turning.
The kit arrives with 6 iron castings together with all
necessary material to complete this invaluable asset.
5 " 2-Jaw Independent Chuck HK1650
These chucks were very popular in the world of pipe
fittings, enabling awkward shapes to be held quickly and
repeatably. In essence a faceplate with a highly versatile
vice attached. Each jaw is adjusted independently,
allowing irregular or offset work to be accommodated
securely. Any number of special jaw plates can be made
from the suggested jig, to allow virtually any shape to be
accepted.
This chuck can be adapted to suit any lathe above 3" centre
height by turning a shallow register onto your faceplate or
catchplate. The drawings include details for a Myford
Series 7 adaptor. The kit comes complete drawings and
notes plus all necessary materials for the chuck, adaptor,
key and your first 2 sets of jaw plates. You'll need taps for
7/16" x 32 tpi (SP 1015) and, more unusually, a 5/16" BSW
for a Left Hand threads (SP 1016).
HK1650 37.50
HK2230 89.20
Lathe - Setting work to run true on the faceplate can also be completed without fuss or doubt using the
Centering Microscope from the lathe's tailstock. Looking from either the tailstock or headstock you'll also find
that not only can you now confidently set your tools at centre height, you'll get a great view of a tool's tip condi-
tion and profile as well.
The kit comes with detailed construction notes, drawings projected from a 3D solid model and all necessary
material including eyepiece, objective lens, silvered prism, graticule, fasteners and aluminium bar and tube. The
kit is available with 4 different arbors to suit your equipment:
HK171X Centering Microscope
The Centering Microscope is used for precisely and
repeatably setting work on the milling machine, lathe or
drill. Through the eyepiece on the horizontal shaft you
will see an inverted image of your job magnified X20 at a
focal length of about 1 from the lower objective lens.
The field of view of around 5mm is calibrated through a
high contrast, chrome on glass graticule pattern of
crosshairs and concentric circles which can be adjusted to
within 0.001/0.03mm of the absolute centre of your
machine's spindle. A sniper scope for the workshop!
Mill and Drill - We all struggle to locate edges, centres,
contours, and layout lines to any real level of confidence.
The Centering Microscope allows you to place a drill or
milling cutter exactly where you intend, every time; no
need for a centre punch, a wiggler, Engineer's buttons or
cigarette papers!
HK1720 Machinist's Hammer
Much under-rated as a workshop setting device. This
classic 14oz (400g) mallet boasts one bronze and one
aluminium pole that cannot mar a finished job and the
1 head is perfectly balanced about the 10 tapered
shaft. One tap is enough to bring work down squarely in
the vice or move a loosely clamped job by a gnat's at a
time on lathe, drill or milling machine.
The tapered shaft is turned between offset centres and the
whole project takes less than a wet Sunday to complete.
The kit includes drawings, notes and all necessary mate-
rial.

The kit includes drawings, notes and all necessary mate-
rial.
HK 1712 Centering Microscope Kit with parallel arbor for
collet or drill chuck.
HK 1710 Centering Microscope Kit with Morse Taper No2 arbor.
HK 1711 Centering Microscope Kit with Morse Taper No3 arbor.

fitted, thin discs or washers can be squarely held in the 3 jaw chuck and faced off parallel to within 0.0002". Using
the unique 'scale-nut' attachments, custom nuts with oversized threads can be produced with ease to enhance
the appearance of scale models.
This kit arrives with drawings and construction notes together with all necessary materials to manufacture the
back stop and accessory heads. Designed originally for the Super 7 (NOT later 'Big Bore' models), adaptations can
easily be made for the ML7 and ML10 spindles.
Myford Lathe Back Stop HK 2010
The clearance bore through a lathe's mandrel is ideal for
admitting long lengths of material, but every 'pro' attracts
a 'con'. The classic role of a lathe back stop is to provide a
fixed axial limit against which material can be loaded; a
critical feature for efficient repetition work. Used in league
with say a Tailstock Turret and/or a Saddle Stop, a batch of
turned components can be produced quickly and rou-
tinely.
In addition to this fundamental role, Mr. Thomas' refine-
ment of the original J A Radford design provides for the
fitment of a number of accessory heads. With disc-stops

Workshop Bending Rolls
Sheet Metal Folder
Have you reached the limit with bending sheet materials
around jam jars? Mr. G. H. Thomas' pinch roll design
has a number of advantages over conventional pyramid
rollers. The metal to be rolled is securely gripped between
a pair of rollers of 1 1/8 and positively driven forward
against an adjustable deflecting roller. Full cylinders with
parallel edges can be rolled the top roll slips out to release
work right the way down to a 1 tube. Grooves in the
top roller accommodate channel or flanged edges.
Capacity in non-ferrous materials is up to 16swg (1/16)
and up to 20swg (0.038) in steel. Maximum width rolled
is 10. Our kit includes drawings, instructions the 4
finished gears and all necessary steel, brass and fasteners.
A simple design intended for making loco lubricator oil
tanks, cab steps and such. Separate blades can made of
any width to allow the folding of all four sides of a box.
Precision bronze bushes ensure that the blade and bed
Vees meet accurately. Non-ferrous material of up to
16swg (1/16) and 4 width can be formed without fuss.
The folder can be powered by a bench vice of 3
although details are given for a simple press frame based
on the use of a car jack. Our kit includes steel, bushes,
fasteners together with drawings and construction notes.

Quick-Set Keats Angle Plate HK 2430
Whilst the Keats Angle Plate has long been associated with
offset-turning on the faceplate, this application was never
mentioned in Harold Keats' 1918 patent nor in early
adverts. Indeed, the standard Keats plate is among the
world's MOST diabolical items to offset accurately!
However, our unique variation on the original is a good
deal easier to work with. The workpiece is clamped into
the fixture which is then clamped loosely to the faceplate.
The workpiece/fixture is centralised on the lathe in the
conventional way before being tightly clamped to the
faceplate. To create the offset it is only necessary to loosen,
then slide the vee block along its base - the exact amount
being measured with a vernier calliper.
In addition to its use for turning eccentric features, the 2
castings can be assembled as a sturdy vee block that can
be clamped to the milling table to facilitate the machining
of crank webs, cross holes and keyways.

HK2070 Saw Table Attachment
Expertly engineered by G P Potts, this attachment simpli-
fies slitting saw work dramatically. The table measures 7" x
4" and will fit any lathe of 3" centre height or larger.
The base casting attaches to the cross slide above a saw
arbor which is driven between centres. Cast fences are
provided for accurate ripping and mitre work in ferrous or
non ferrous metals up to around " thick. The attachment
uses a standard slitting saw blade of 3" - 5", up to 1/16"
thick. The table can be raised and lowered to set the
standout of the blade.
It is practical to hand feed sheet materials up to around
1/16" thick and, unlike shears, the blade provides a clean
cut without buckling. The bridge clamp is a great addition
for thicker materials. Having clamped your job to the table
a good, sensitive feed is provided from your lathe's cross
slide handle. If you have a powered cross feed - all the
better!
The kit comes complete with drawings, construction
notes, 4 iron castings and all material required to produce
the Saw Table together with the bridge clamp, fences and
slitting saw arbor.
HK 2070 78.50
Sawing and Filing Attachment HK2140
This soundly designed lathe attachment provides a true
vertical cutting action, unlike the woodworker's rocking
beam scroll saw. The attachment powers most 6
tension blades (tungsten carbide rod saw [Abrafile],
coping saw, junior hacksaw), machine files and jig/sabre
saws through almost any material: a god-send for engine,
loco and clock builders.
The 6 tilting table, with 4 5/8 of throat, accommo-
dates all manner of work, including profiling, piercing,
chamfering and finishing. With an adjustable stroke of up
to 2 1/8 and running at up to 700 strokes/minute this
attachment will save you hours!
Quickly set up on the cross-slide, the attachment sits at a
comfortable working height, in a very well lit area! Since
the slide bar descends below the base of the main casting,
you should check that there is at least 1 of free space
between your cross-slide and bed or that there is a gap
between the front and rear sheaves of at least 1 (as
Myford 7 Series).

HK1970 Universal Spring Winder
This remarkable tool was developed in the late 1940's by a
Zurich based company called Vertechap AG and was
particularly favoured by Tubal Cain. It is used in conjunc-
tion with the lathe, enabling tension and compression
springs or electrical coils of any length or diameter to be
quickly and simply made from wire up to around 3/32
(2.5mm).
The wire is fed through the handle, to ensure safety, and
wire tension can be adjusted before and during the actual
operation. The distance between adjacent coils can be set
on the integral dividing disc. The results are thoroughly
impressive!
The kit includes all necessary bar stock (Aluminium, Steel
and Nylon 66), a long-series drill to complete the guide
hole and a starter pack of around 20ft (6m) of music wire
in 3 different gauges. Instructions for its use as well as the
basics of spring design are included with the drawings and
construction notes. Why put up with springs that are
sort-of right?

earlier machines.
HK1570 Swarf Guards - Myford Super 7
This kit was developed to put an end to swarf (chip)
ingress problems on the leadscrew and tailstock of
Myford's Super 7 lathe. If you take the total time you've
spent brushing swarf out of your leadscrew and apron;
add this to the regular ritual of sliding the tailstock off the
bed to remove swarf from under it and then factor in
keeping the tailstock barrel clean..then you'll soon
appreciate the value of these simple improvements. This
kit includes a single drawing together with all of the
necessary materials. You'll be glad you invested!

material to add these features to
earlier machines.
HK1570 Swarf Guards - Myford Super 7
This kit was developed to put an end to swarf (chip)
ingress problems on the leadscrew and tailstock of
Myford's Super 7 lathe. If you take the total time you've
spent brushing swarf out of your leadscrew and apron;
add this to the regular ritual of sliding the tailstock off the
bed to remove swarf from under it and then factor in
keeping the tailstock barrel clean..then you'll soon
appreciate the value of these simple improvements. This
kit includes a single drawing together with all of the
necessary materials. You'll be glad you invested!

HK2300 The Dynamic Tool Post Grinder
We are pleased to announce this unique addition to the
Hemingway range. The Dynamic Tool Post Grinder,
designed by Gordon Cornell, is the finest machine in its
class - by far! Suitable for lathes of 3" centre height and
up, the Dynamic brings entirely new capabilities to your
workshop.
Ground surfaces are a luxury typical denied to the small
workshop owner. Dedicated machinery is too expensive
and large for occasional use. The Dynamic overcomes
these issues - providing precision, versatility and refine-
ment to your work. Quickly fitted to the lathe's top slide,
the Dynamic will remove even hardened material in
0.0001- 0.0010steps, leaving surface finishes in excess
of Ra 16 in (0.4m), all without fuss and bother.
The Dynamic accepts a variety of wheels and guards to accommodate External (cylindrical), Internal (bore) and
Surface (face) grinding. A range of motor pulleys provides correct shaft speeds of between 6,000 - 26,000rpm.
The Project: This kit is expertly designed for ease of manufacture. Each of the aluminium castings will swing in
a lathe of 3 1/2" centre height of or larger. Additional stubs have been cast-in to ease set ups, apertures for the
motor and other features are created simply by facing away hollows and one of the castings is parted off to
produces 3 separate components. The kit of course also includes all of the material required to complete this
project including:
7 Aluminium castings for the machine and all necessary guards.
Face mounted, 250W (1/3 HP), 2 pole motor with switch, cable and connectors.

HK1580 Saddle Chip Tray Myford Lathes
How much fun is it to clean down your Myford after a cast
iron session? Handfuls of gritty swarf sprayed along the
bed, sneaking under the saddle felt and cascading down
onto the feedscrew and rack.... Fear not we have what
you need!
If you have a post-war Myford (7s, 10s, 254s) then you
can benefit from this beautifully designed Saddle Chip
Tray. The single alloy casting fits to the saddle, ahead of the
cross slide using the existing fixed steady tapping. Fitted
and removed in seconds (and without tooling) it will save
you many hours each year on clean-ups and will protect
your bed and saddle surfaces from abrasive debris.
The Saddle Chip Tray will happily pass under a 5" chuck
and takes up only a minimum amount of axial length. The
kit includes material for the forward felt wiper, a captive
screw and a cross drilled sump plug to drain away coolant.
Buy one now and loose your inhibitions with Tool Post Grinding and iron casting work!

No modification is required to the leadscrew and the hand wheel action becomes significantly more certain.
Simple drawing, instructions plus needle races, fastener, steel and bronze to replace the existing bushes are all
included.
Axial slip of the leadscrew is a common cause of thread
inaccuracies. A slight oscillation imparted to the screw
will cause a periodic error in pitch. Georg Schlesinger
adopted a pass-off criteria of half of one ten thousandth
of an inch of slip for the 1920's German machine tool
industry. To adjust clearance in the right hand bearing of
the Myford Super 7 is a difficult balancing act, generally
resulting in excessive thrust loads. This modification,
carried out on the right hand bearing, provides two
precision needle thrust races to accept the load when
screw cutting.
It is of course 'good practice' on all machine tools to lock all but the slide necessary
to achieve the cut.
You'll be surprised to see how much more frequently you adopt 'good practice'
when you haven't got to go looking for the right spanner to tighten Myford's
standard saddle clamp hex bolt.
Why live with this aggravation? In just 30 minutes you can replace Myford's bolt
with our industry-grade ratchet handle assembly. The handle can be parked in
20 separate positions so will never get in the way of the tailstock.
This kit includes the handle assembly and material to adapt it to Myford's ML10,
ML7 or Super 7 saddle. A single drawing with construction notes is provided.

Slow Speed Drive For Vertical Miller
Many imported vertical millers have a bottom speed of
around 160 r.p.m. - too high for the model engineer's
needs. By re-machining the existing pulleys and using a
Poly V-belt drive, a lower speed of approximately 50 rpm
can be attained without sacrificing the top speed range.
The modification was designed by G. F. Deane and Partner,
consultant engineers, who have a vast knowledge of this
type of drive.

HK126X Universal Pillar Tool
The origin of this design lay in the desire to create a
versatile and useful tool, occupying little bench space and
being capable of easy construction using a 3 1/2" centre
lathe. When introduced some years ago as the Tapping
and Staking Tool, so varied were the uses of the tool, that
when the Sensitive Drill was added, a change of title to the
Universal Pillar Tool became essential! Please note that all
drawings and instructions for construction and use are
contained in Mr. Thomas book, Workshop Techniques.
HK 1260 The Basic UPT Kit
The basic kit consists of four iron castings, namely the
Base, 2 Arms and the 6 diameter Table . The base is fixed
to a base board and supports the ground steel column .
This column carries the two arms, which are quite free to
slide up and down or rotate about it. The table will fit
either arm. When tapping a component the table is
located in the lower arm and supports the item to be
tapped. The upper arm then carries the tap holder. If
riveting is desired, then the lower arm carries the stake,
while the upper arm holds the dolly.
The Kit includes the castings, ground steel column and all
steel, brass and fasteners to complete the Universal Pillar Tool and most of its attachments. The 3/8" Jacobs
chuck favoured by GHT for holding lager taps is available in the standard products section (SP 1005).

HK 1266 The Rotatable Staking Kit
Staking can be done in a manner similar to riveting, but the Rotatable Stake will no doubt appeal to most users.
15 holes from 3/64 to 3/8 can be quickly indexed from a common PCD. This kit includes the iron casting, 2
blanks for the top plate and all other bar sections required. Ideally, the completed top plate should be hardened
then ground. Great results can be obtained with only simple equipment.
HK 1275 Clock Bushing Attachment.
The lower arm of of the UPT accepts a jig to hold the clock plate. After centring the appropriate hole in the clock
plate, a Bergeon type reamer, guided in the upper arm, corrects the worn hole. The reamer is then exchanged for a
small press which pushes the bush accurately into position. Kit includes materials for jig, press, reamer holder
together with drawings and instructions.

Sensitive Drill Attachment For Universal Pillar Tool HK127X
This attachment is prized by the small workshop owner
perhaps more that any for its sensitivity in producing
smaller holes (No.80 to around 5/32). Larger pillar drills,
with worm and wheel downfeed cannot begin to provide
the feedback of the Sensitive Drill attachment. The 5/32"
Jacobs chuck favoured by GHT is available in the standard
products section (SP 1004).
All drawings and instructions for construction and use of
the Sensitive Drill Attachment are contained in Mr.
Thomas book, Workshop Techniques.
HK 1270
The full Sensitive Drill Kit arrives complete with the drill
head casting and all bearings, spring, belting, steel and
brass. It slips easily onto the column and can be driven
by a 1,450 rpm. motor of minimum 1/12 hp (not
provided).

The Alloy Foot Kit. An aluminium casting replaces the
iron base, allowing the UPT, complete with Sensitive
Drilling attachment to be rigidly mounted on either the
cross slide or, more usefully, the lathe bed. Mounted on
the bed between the headstock and cross slide, the
Sensitive Drill can be powered by the headstock at a
variety of speeds. Work placed on the cross slide can
then be co-ordinate drilled (or spotted) to accuracies of
1/1000. The kit includes the casting and other
material to complete the foot and its anchorages.

Screwcutting Gearbox - Myford ML10
Developed from the Algoa Screw Cutting Gear Box, but
using castings instead of the original fabricated structure.
The gearbox is suitable for the Myford 7 Series range and
provides a truly enormous saving over the commercial
item.
Gears; make or buy? All of the 21 gears are designed as
Myford standard 20DP and all except a single 18t gear, can
be adapted from standard 20t 75t change wheels.
However, Machin gives elegant instruction for making the
gear set from sawn blanks. The Versatile Dividing Head
with Milling Kit could make light work of this task.
The design retains Myfords standard change wheel quadrant, allowing metric pitches to be cut in addition to the
significant range of imperial feeds.
Using the same design parameters as the Algoa box, Mr. V Archibald has designed and constructed a fabricated
gear box for the ML10/Speed 10 lathes. The compact unit use 28DP gears throughout (21 required) to achieve
the necessary proportion for this smaller lathe.
For this unique project, Hemingway can offer Mr. Archibald's elegantly detailed drawings and construction notes
only. We do not have a material kit.

Trent Pinion Mill
Accurate pinion cutting has always presented a problem
to clockmakers without access to sophisticated machin-
ery. Particularly for the craftsman who requires small
numbers of perhaps widely differing sizes.
Designed by Elliot Isaacs and Alan Timmins, the Trent
Pinion Mill includes substantial castings and dovetailed
work slides. A miniature milling machine, the Trent
provides maximum rigidity both in cutter support and
work holding. The pinion or small wheel being cut (2"
max.) is held in collets or between centres and is indexed
by a notched brass plate with provision for backlash
adjustment. Teeth are quickly and accurately cut in even
the toughest materials, with or without coolant. The
design accepts your cutters up to 35mm on a standard
7mm bore. Travel in the X, Y and Z planes are 4", 3/8" and
2" respectively. The completed mill weighs 8.5kg (19lbs)
and stands 8 tall. Please note that to complete this kit
you will need access to a mill with at least 8 of X travel.
Trent Pinion Mill Full Kit
The kit includes all necessary materials with the exception
of the motor. Over 70 items including; iron castings for
the column, knee and head and tailstocks, 26 different
sections of steel, iron, bronze and brass, threaded bar for
the 2 feed screws, and polyurethane drive belting. The kit
also includes professionally compiled drawings and Alan's
build notes are carefully thought through, with photos

be. Keep this tool handy and you'll be amazed how much
use it gets.

secondary drive belt conversion, fully replicates the smooth drive for which the later machines were renowned.
Please Note: This modification is designed to suit Myford Super 7s built after June 1958 (Serial No. SK 8128). It is
not suitable for the earlier models where the clutch was fitted within the countershaft pulley. If the larger primary
pulley on your lathe is the older alloy die-casting, this conversion is not suitable.
The conversion consists of machining a new motor pulley and modifying the lathes existing clutch/pulley to
accept an iron ring onto which the Poly V form can be cut. Whilst the Super 7 can be used to manufacture the
motor pulley, once the clutch/pulley has been removed for modification (comprehensive instructions are given for
this straightforward job), the lathe is out of action! Accordingly, access to a second lathe is required to complete
the conversion ideally a substantial lathe with a centre height greater than 5.
Final Drive Conversion
In exchange for machining new pulleys for the mandrel
and countershaft, you are rewarded with a very smooth
drive, particularly at high speeds, and with a belt that is a
delight to slip across the pulley steps. The conversion suits
all Super 7s from 1953 until 2002 when Myford them-
selves changed to Poly-V's!
Drawings and notes,
together with the
necessary Poly V Belt 27.50
2 Iron castings (cored) 45.40
This attachment suits Myford's 7 Series lathes (Super 7, ML7) and fits to the right of the lathe's apron at the front
of the bed. No modification to your lathe is required and the project is straight forward. The kit arrives with
drawings and notes together with a single iron casting and all necessary bar materials. You will also need a 404
Woodruff Cutter (SP 1030).
HK1311 Potts Drill Grinding Jig
Developed by G P Potts in the 1920's,
this jig is widely respected and a coveted
addition to the workshop. Based on the
works of Van Rouen in 1913 (details
included), the cone geometry gener-
ated by the jig provides near perfect
back-off, providing an easy cutting drill
in the important range of 1/8" to
1/2".
The geometry is adjusted according to
the drill diameter by the simple use of a
calliper. The jig can be mounted either
to the side of the bench grinder or to the
base of the Worden Mk3.
The current design has been vetted by
Professor Dr.-Ing. Jrg Hugel of the
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Zurich, who calculates that it is capable of grinding the "perfect drill".
The kit includes 6 iron and 1 gunmetal casting together with all necessary bar materials and fasteners. The
drawings which now accompany the kit are of a much higher standard than previously available and have taken
many, many hours to prepare. Included in the design are a couple of interesting modifications proposed by
Duplex in 1951 to improve repeatability.
Construction notes unfortunately are not available and, owing to the complexity of the angles involved, this may
not be a project for the beginner to tackle.

HK1840 Multi-Position Saddle Stop Myford 7 Series
Where a run of turned components is
required from the lathe, this attachment
will very quickly earn its keep. In fact,
the device is fitted and removed so
quickly that you will even save time
when producing a single part!
This great new design allows for up to 6
separate axial carriage positions to be
set on a rotating turret. Each stop can
be adjusted with a vernier or slip gauges
depending on the accuracy required. In
action, the saddle can be wound along
to a stop with certain and repeatable
precision. The turret is then revolved to
the next detent position to complete the
next operation.

HK 146X Poly V Belt Conversion Myford Super 7
After 2002, with the introduction of their Big Bore
machines, Myford adopted J- section Poly V belts through-
out the Super 7 range. The Poly V Belt arrangement
provides a significant improvement in transmission,
allowing more grip with less vibration and harshness.
Hemingway is pleased to offer a proven conversion for
older S7 owners.
Primary Drive Conversion
This conversion was designed and developed by D A G
Brown, who for many years worked with Myford at
exhibitions to demonstrate the capabilities of their newer
lathes. Derek reports that this conversion, along with the

MasterCard, Maestro and Switch cards. You may send your card information via post, phone, fax or over the Internet, making use of the 128
bit encryption with our on-line catalogue. If you are shopping from outside the UK, place your order and your card company will convert the
Pounds Sterling transaction to your own currency.
Shipping
UK
We have negotiated a 2/3 day delivery rate of 8.25 for all UK orders above 2kg. Below this weight, one of us will just have to walk down
to the Post Office....
EXPORT
For parcels weighing below 2kg, we will send your delivery by the Royal Mail's small packet service. Occasionally it makes sense for us to
split your kit into 2 separate boxes (say 1.9kg and 0.5kg) to use this service! Above 2.0kg we use Fedex and DHL. Typical delivery times are 5
days to either the Antipodes, the Colonies or the Continent. Please get in touch for a quotation.
Delivery Lead Times
In general, we "Make to Order" rather than "Make to Stock". We aim to despatch your UK orders within 3 business days and International
orders within 5 days. Occasionally, you'll catch us waiting for certain items (typically castings) to arrive.... At our option, we may decide to
forward your incomplete kit together with a note declaring the shortage(s). This allows you to make a start. We will then forward, at our
expense, the missing items once they are available. If the delay is likely to be substantial, or if we are missing an item without which you can't
start your project, we'll get in touch and discuss it with you - under these circumstances we won't process your payment until everything is
ready to ship.
VAT Included - Registration No. GB 876 6053 91
Hemingway Kits is registered for Value Added Tax and all of the prices shown include this tax at a rate of 20.0 %. For shipments made to
addresses outside of the European Community, this tax can be discounted from your order. This discount (or refund) does not apply to
shipping costs or orders for plans and books. Incidentally, to remove 20.0% from a tax-inclusive price you must divide by 1.2 (NOT multiply by
0.8)!
Your Satisfaction
It is very important to us that you are satisfied with your order. Please do contact us if you have a concern and we promise to address it
immediately.
The occasional faulty casting is inevitable from the low volume processes that we employ. Any such casting returned to us will be replaced free
of charge, together with a credit note for the shipping cost which you have incurred. We cannot, however, accept claims for labour or other
costs arising from such faults.
There's also an infinitesimally small chance that YOU will scrap an item?! Please get in touch and you'll find we show great mercy in pricing
replacement materials.
All products are described and shown as accurately as possible. However, customers are given the full benefit, AT ONCE, of any improvements
to designs and specifications.
Our Satisfaction!
We love what we do and are always pleased to hear about your successful projects. Photograph are always welcome together with any
comments you can offer about your improvements, alternative set-ups and product configurations for specific machine tools or jobs.
