Hecker Quote
The reading of the bible is the most salutary of all
reading. We say to Catholic readers, Read the bible!
Read it with Prayer, that you may be enlightened by the
light of the holy spirit to understand what you read
read it with gratitude to Gods Church, Which has
preserved it and placed it in your hands to be read and
to be followed.

Pastoral Corner
If today you hear Gods voice, harden not your hearts!!
We dont have to go to Africa or the Middle East to see the effects of a land parched and dried
and destroyed through lack of water, once rich and fertile soil now packed in hard clumps that
paradoxically will crumble into dust and sand at the slightest pressure. We need only drive a
few hundred miles south to the drought stricken farms and vineyards of California. And
sometimes when the rain finally comes, the ground is so hard that it can't penetrate, and so it
runs away causing flash-flooding.

The human heart is much like this. A hardened heart might give the impression of being a strong
heart and can even appear invulnerable since it is difficult to hurt someone who has no feelings.
Nevertheless, hard-heartedness is a sad and pitiable state. To adopt a hardhearted attitude
toward life and other people is to injure ourselves.

A hard heart can't feel. A hard heart can't respond. A hard heart can't love. A hard heart can't
experience sorrow, but neither can it experience joy. A hard heart is a closed heart, so it can't
receive. A hard heart is a barren heart. A hard heart is the most serious handicap of all. From a
spiritual point of view it is one of the worst things that can happen to anyone. It's bad to harden
one's heart even against one person. We may have very good reasons for doing so, but we do
ourselves serious damage spiritually.

A soft heart, on the other hand, is a blessing. True, it makes one vulnerable; the soft-hearted are
easily hurt. But a soft heart can also be touched, moved, and warmed. It can receive. It can be
saddened but it can also be deliriously happy. It can respond. It can burst into life like a garden
in springtime.

Jesus came not just to purify our hearts, but to soften them, to open them, to sow the seed of
God's word in them; to turn them from wastelands into fertile ground.

To harden our hearts against one another is bad enough. But to harden our hearts against God
