HARSH MARIWALA

Hello everyone. I am Ketki Navale. Im from division D, Human Resources and my roll number is
36179. The corporate personality that I will be talking about today is Mr. Harsh Mariwala.
Mr. Harshraj Charandas Mariwala was born on 14 May 1951 to Hemlatha and Charandas
Mariwala who was an oil manufacturer and a member of one of Mumbai's more prominent
Gujarati business families. At 63, Mr. Mariwala continues to be the Chairman and Managing
Director of Marico Industries Ltd.

Mr. Mariwala holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Sydenham College in Mumbai. He
started his business career in 1971 by joining the family firm, Bombay Oil Industries Limited
(BOIL). BOIL's history can be traced back to 1862 when Kanji Morarji, started a small trading
business in Mumbai. By 1948, the Mariwalas had taken it over and expanded it, adding
manufacturing facilities in Mumbai, including a coconut oil extraction plant, a vegetable oil
refinery and a small chemical plant. Mr. Mariwala took charge of the Company's Consumer
Products division in 1975. The growth curve for this company has been especially steep since
1990, when the FMCG division of BOIL was hived off into Marico Industries Ltd. Dr. Mariwala
has been instrumental in maintaining Marico's business at a sustainable and profitable growth
pace. Over the last 3 decades, he has transformed a traditional commodity driven business into
a leading Consumer Products & Services Company in the Beauty and Wellness space. Mr.
Mariwala's leadership and passion to excel has lead the company to vouch for the fact that one
out of every four Indians is a Marico consumer. , with its portfolio of trusted brands such as
Parachute, Saffola, Nihar, Kaya, Mediker, Revive, among others. Despite the presence of
multinational companies in the FMCG categories, most of Marico's brands and their extensions
occupy leadership positions (No. 1 or No. 2) with significant market shares in categories such as
Coconut Oil, Hair Oils and cosmetic skin care solutions.
Under his leadership, Marico has achieved several recognitions. Rated as one of India`s Most
Innovative companies (Business Today-Monitor Group Innovation Study 2008), Marico was
selected as one of eight Indian companies in the Standard & Poor`s Global Challengers List
(2007).

Mr. Mariwala himself has had an illustrious career as an entrepreneur. He was conferred with
the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award (2009) in the Manufacturing category,
Talent Management Award at the CNBC India Business Leader Award (2009), the Teachers
Achievement Award in Business (2006) and the CEO with HR Orientation - Global Excellence
HR Award (2007) by the Asia Pacific HRM Congress.
In March 2011, Mr. Mariwala was elected as the President of Federation of Indian Chambers of
Commerce and Industry (FICCI). He is also on the Board of Cadbury India Limited. In the past, he
has held several positions as the FMCG Committee Chairman of FICCI and CII. Harsh Mariwala is
also a part of the Young President Organization (YPO) and World Presidents Organization
(WPO).
Harsh Mariwalas entrepreneurial drive and passion for Innovation, enthused him to establish
the Marico Innovation Foundation in 2003. The Foundation acts as a catalyst to fuel innovation
in India. In addition, Harsh Mariwala also mentors a group of young and upcoming
entrepreneurs, in association with TiE The Indus Entrepreneurs - a part of TiEs Mentor
Programme.
He also launched ASCENT a non-profit venture, designed as a unique and powerful 'self-help"
platform for ambitious entrepreneurs, who have already embarked on their journey and are
raring to grow. ASCENT seeks to Accelerate and SCale up ENTerprises, through leveraging the
power of Entrepreneur groups.

His mom played golf in a saree and made headlines. Her son, with a bit of her rebellious streak
in him, plays golf and strikes big deals on the golf course. A fitness buff, Mariwala is a regular
member of the gym, and trains at least three days a week. If you ask him why is the boss not at the site of
action, Mr. Mariwala says: The team is doing it. I am not required to be there. This is his philosophy,
one that envisions making oneself redundant at every stage in an entrepreneurs path to scaling up in
order to facilitate further growth. One should be able to delegate work, change, adapt and modify
their company into becoming bigger and create certain systems for smooth functioning along
on the way.

Mr. Mariwala is an epitome of humility at the height of success. As he had no formal training in
this business management, he would take only a few steps at a time and learn from his
mistakes. He believes that facing challenges and achieving results is a part and parcel of any
work. There are roadblocks but in the end when you reach your goals, the journey seems worth
it. Our achievements initially give us a sense of recognition. This takes us to sustainability and
then gives an opportunity to give back to society.

I believe that Mr. Mariwala is one the most inspiring entrepreneurs of today. I would like to
quote something said by him that I thought was very inspiring. He says:
I strongly believe that each person is gifted with certain skills and it is important to identify
one's talent and pursue that field. Search for and understand your aptitude, nurture it and
focus on that line of work. Everyone has to face setbacks but don't let these stop you, prove
yourself and learn from them. Learn to manage adversity, think out of the box and do not stop
yourself from taking risks and innovating.
