AtE3Ubisoftmadesomeclaimswhichwereonlytoppedinmagnitudebythesizeofthecityin
whichUnitytakesplace.ThegamesdevelopersclaimedthatthehistoricFrenchcapitalhadbeen
madeona1:1scaleandsowouldobviouslybeabsolutelymassive.Furthertothisclaimaboutthe
scale, rumours have emerged thatUnitys Paris could be bigger than the combined island
landmassesofACIV.AnyonewhohasspentanytimeplayingBlackFlagwillknowthatthatwould
beonehellofacity.Thesupposedsizeofthecitycombinedwiththeintricatelevelsofdetailithas
been rendered in, and the fact that a large percentage of the buildings can purportedly now be
explored makes Ubisofts claims about the sprawling scale of the metropolis quite difficult to
swallow.Ofcourseforallweknowitcouldbea100%accurate,butuntilwetakecontrolofArno
and have him jog, vault and swing his way across the citys diameter we are going to remain
skeptical. The prospect of the city being even near this stupendous size is extremely exciting
anyway.

Creed series. The addition of the Controlled Descent feature to Unitys navigation system will
apparentlymakecomingdownfromtherooftopsimmeasurablyeasier.Excitingthoughthisnew
feature may be, the E3 demos narrator rather ominously stated that essentially [the player]
doesnthavetolookforahaystacktogettostreetlevelanymore.Werenotsurehowtotakethis
possibleannouncementthatthestacksofhaymayhavebeenphasedoutofthegame.Grantedit
wasratherimplausiblethatthemanyvariedcitiesseparatedbyseveralcenturieswerealllittered
withwelllocatedhaystacksallowingyoutojumpfrombuildingsorevadeguards,buttherecanbe
nodenyingthatleapingwithrecklessabandonfromthegamestalleststructuresbeforecrashing
into the hay is one of the definitive aspects of the series. Of course we are thankful that the
ControlledDescentfacilityhasbeenimplementedbutwehopethattheoptiontomaketheleap
offaithreturns.

randomlyhappeningbeforebecominginvolvedourselvesisaverycompellingone.Wesawinthe
E3 demo how Arno can become seamlessly involved in amurder mystery mission after just
encounteringsomedistressedpeasantsbutwehopethatthisisntjustananomalyandthata
goodamountofthegamesmissionsareinitiatedinthisway.
7. ModernElements
We already know that memory will play a reduced role in Unity. An announcement which has
rightlygotfansexcitedisthattheAdaptiveMissionMechanicmeansthatratherthantheplayer
being given a series of stringent objectives, they will now have a choice of several pathways to
complete the mission. No longer will deviating from an objective cause automatic de
sychronisationasthisamendedmechanicmeansthatplayerswillhavefarmorefreedomtoactas
theywishinParis.RumoursaboundthatUbisoftwillbegoingastepfurtherthanthis,significantly
reducingthetimespentinthemodernworld.WesawflashesofthisinBlackFlagwiththelackof
DesmondMilesandmanyanticipatethatthissentimentwillbecarriedovertoUnity.Ofcoursewe
dont want to see the modern aspect of the game eliminated entirely. There can be no denying
thatitisacrucialtoolusedtodeliverthegamesnarrative.However,weexpecttobespendingfar
moretimein18thcenturyPariswiththeAnimusworkingovertime.

As if Paris werent gigantic enough, rumours are circulating online that the player will have the
freedomtoexploreotherFrench(orpossiblyevenEuropean)cities.Thedeveloperhintedthata
youngArnowouldbeshowninthecityofVersaillesintheledeFranceregionindeed,untilthe
revolution Versailles was the nations de factocapital so it would surely be relevant to Unitys
narrative. It may seem greedy to speculate over whether there will be other cities to carry out
Arnosbloodytradein,butwegamersarenotoriously difficulttosatisfy.ThethoughtofUbisoft
contrastingthesprawlingPariswiththemoreMediterraneanfeelofsomewherelikeMarseillesis

beautifulcitythatisParis,thewaythatfightsbetweenthecitizensandsoldierscaneruptatany
minute and how much French loved the guillotine a few hundred years ago. In the several
demonstrationsUbisofttreatedustowereallydidseealot.Onethingwedidntseehoweverwas
thefaceofthegamescentralprotagonist,Arno.Wesawplentyoftheaspiringassassinbutinevery
sequence he was clad in his hood of course this is only prudent for a man in his line of work.
However, it would have been nice to see a glimpse of the mans face who we will inevitably be
spendingtensofhoursplayingas.OneeagleeyedfanpausedamakingofAssassinsCreedUnity
videoatapointwhereasnapshotofamanwhoisverylikelytobeArnocanbeseen.Ofcourseit
isyettobeconfirmedbutthiscouldquiteeasilybethefaceofthemanwewillbeusingtoslaughter
copious amounts of Templar in the picturesque city.

4.HistoricalEvents
EversinceitwasreleasedthatthenexttitleintheAssassinsCreedfranchisewouldbesetduring
theFrenchRevolutionfanshavebeenwildlyspeculatingoverwhichhistoricalpeopleandevents
wecanexpecttoencounterinUbisoftsgame.Withonlyahandfulofmonthsleftuntilthegames
projectedlaunchdateanddespiteE3havingbeenandgone,thesequestionshavenottrulybeen
answered.ThefootagewehaveseenofUnitysofarmayannouncethefactthatthegametakes
placeduringtheReignofTerrorbutspeculationandrumoursarerifethattheactioncouldstartup
beforethecountrywasrockedbyrevolution.Thiswouldmeanthattheplayercouldwitnessand
even be a part of the storming of the Bastille and watch the execution of King Louis XVI. This
historicalgroundingwouldnotonlyappealtohistorybuffsbutmoreimportantlyitwouldheighten
thestakesofthegamesnarrative.Evenmoreintriguingly,rumoursaboundthatwecouldwitness
therisetopowerofNapoleonBonapartewhoseizedpowerinFranceaftertherevolt.IfUbisoft
had planned to use the turmoil in France to inspire a series of games after Unity, they could
eventuallyusethisNapoleonangletohaveaningameversionoftheBattleofTrafalgarinoneof
Unityssequels,makingfulluseofthenavalmechanicsintroducedinACIII.
3.MoralAmbiguity
InthepasttheAssassinsCreedserieshassufferedfrombeingmorallyuncomplicated.Everything
has been a little too black and white the Templars are the bad guys and the Assassins are
unquestionably good. Gaming as a medium has progressed and the consumer now expects a
narrative to have morally grey elements which allow the player to make their own moral
judgements.OneoftheopeningstatementsintheE3commenteddemoisthataKingonceruled
headstrongandcorrupt;nowheadlessandacorpse,murderedbymenjustasvile.Thefactthat
boththebeheadedKingLouisXVIandtheinsurgentswhostarttheReignofTerroraredismissed
as being morally reprehensible is most certainly a good thing. After playing through Assassins
CreedIIIweknowthatUbisoftarepartialtodepictingrevolutiontheyneedtoacknowledgethat
inarevoltbothfactionsarealwaysresponsibleforcountlessatrocities.Itseemsthatneitherside
isbeingportrayedinagoodlightinUnitywhichismostdefinitelyastepintherightdirection.We
hope that this moral greyness extends to the rest of the game, representing a maturing in the
narrativestyleoftheserieswhichwillforthefirsttimeallowplayerstomaketheirownjudgements.
2.NewCycleAndConnor
Though it may seem like only yesterday that we were slaughtering Templars in Jerusalem, the
originalAssasinsCreedisnearlysevenyearsoldandthepolarisingserieshaslostsomemomentum
inrecenttimes.ItcomesaslittlesurprisethatthegamesdevelopersaretreatingUnityasafresh
start,particularlyasthisistheseriesfirstfulldebutusingnextgentechnologyfromtheground
up.AlexAmancio,Unityscreativedirector,talkedabouthowthegamewillrepresentthestartof
acompletelynewcyclewhichwillmeannewplayersfinditfarmoreapproachable:
Itsanewstart,itsanewnarrativestart.Thatissymbolisedbyacompletelynewcontextforthe
presentday.YouveseenalittlebitofanevolutionwithBlackFlag,[but]werenotgoingtodothe
same thing.What were doing with Unity is reallythe beginning [of] this new cycle ofAssassins
Creedgames.
Critics who believe the series has floundered in recent years will be extremely excited at the
prospect of this new direction. However, this announcement seems to scupper one particular
rumourthatfanshadbeenhopingtobeactualised.ConnorthenativeAmericanprotagonistof
ACIIIwouldvebeenalivewhiletheFrenchRevolutionwastakingplace.Theassassinwhowas
borninthelate1750swasanactivecatalystintheAmericanRevolutionaryWarinthelate18th
century. This crossover would mean that it would be feasible for Connor to make a cameo
appearanceinUnity,hadthedevelopersnotannouncedthattheywerestartinganewcycle.This
stillhasntstoppedpeoplespeculatingthattheKanienkeh:kaAssassinwillmakeanappearance
regardless.Afterall,thegameiscalledUnitywhatbetterwaytoconveythisthanbyunifyingtwo
gamesintheseries?
1.AFemaleCharacter
Without doubt the most
controversial subject surrounding the next installment in the Assassins Creed franchise is the
players inability to chose their characters gender in the games much anticipated coop mode.
Manyhadbelievedthatplayingascharactersotherthanthethecentralprotagonistwouldmean
that players would have the freedom to chose their sex. Ubisoft revealed that they had initially
intendedforplayerstochosethegenderoftheircoopcharacterbuttimeconstraintscombined
with the severely increased workload that introducing a female character would bring made it
impossible. However, the animation director of AC III, Jonathan Cooper,rebukedthis statement,
statingInmyeducatedopinion,Iwouldestimatethistobeadayortwoswork.Notareplacement
of 8000 animations continuing that other than the walk/run cycles, most animations are
androgynous. This criticism from a former employee certainly makes it seem that Ubisoft are
inexplicablyopposedtofeaturingafemalecharacter;clearlysomeextremelybadpublicitythatthe
gamedoesntneed.JonathanCoopersinsightabouthoweasyitwouldbetointroduceafemale
characterhasledmanytobelievethatUbisoftwillgobackontheirwordandmakealadyassassin
availableaswell.Indeed,itwouldundoalotofthebadfeelingthatiscurrentlybeingtargetedat
Unity.We certainly hope that this rumour about Ubisofts change of heart is true. Introducing a
femalecharacterwouldmakethegamemoreaccessibletowomenandallowmoreplayerstoenjoy
thegameastheywantto.
