Introduction
On October 19, 2013 eight (8) samples were submitted by a representative of Yepe Inc. for semi- quantitative analysis by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (SEM/EDXA.) The samples were identified with sample labels; PI1, PI2, PI3, PI4, PI5, MD1, MD2, and MD3. The samples were all samples of sand.
Method The samples were submitted in labeled and sealed zipper-style sample bags. Several of the samples were wet on receipt and subsamples were dried by placing in a clean sample crucible and heating on a hot-plate at 160
F for approximately 10 minutes. A portion of each dried sample was secured
onto an SEM sample stub using electrically conductive, double sided carbon tape. The sample was examined using a JEOL 840A Scanning Electron Microscope. Multiple particles of each sample were analyzed using an iXRF Iridium Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analyzer to provide semi- quantitative elemental analysis results
Results
Energy Dispersive X-Ray analysis showed all samples to be a Silica based sand, composed primarily of Silicon and Oxygen. A number of the samples contained minor amounts of Aluminum, Iron, Titanium, and Potassium, details appear in the EDX results table below. Representative EDX spectra of each of the samples also follow.
