Using Two eRED

Valves as Shallow-Set Barriers During a

Completion Deployment Operation
INTRODUCTION - Te beauty of the eRED valve is that multiple
actions can be initiated; it can be instructed to repeatedly open and close
as required. Also, because it is programmable, each eRED valve can be set
up with an independent signature, allowing the operator to independently
communicate and therefore operate multiple valves within the same
completion.
Te following application demonstrates one practical situation where
two eRED valves can be used during a subsea completion deployment to
dramatically reduce the number of interventions.
THE APPLICATION - One eRED valve is attached just below the tubing
hanger, directly to the annulus short string. Te second eRED valve is pre-
installed on a shallow-set lock within the main tubing string. Both are in
the open position, allowing the completion to self-fll during installation.
Once the tubing hanger is successfully landed, a deep-set barrier is
activated allowing the production packer to be set and the tubing and
annulus to be pressure tested as normal.
Te annular eRED valve is then instructed to close by applying its specifc
pressure/time command. Te tubing string eRED valve is then instructed
to close by applying a diferent pressure/time sequence. If required, either
of the eRED valves can be opened and closed by applying their respective
pressure/time signals to the tubing at any time.
With both eRED valves closed, they act as barriers, holding up to 10,000
psi from above and below. Te drilling BOP can now be safely removed
and the christmas tree installed and tested.
An eRED valve will only open when it receives its unique trigger (a
predetermined pressure held for a predetermined time). Tis allows
multiple and various pressures cycles to be applied to the completion for
testing or activating other equipment. As long as any pressure cycle avoids
the valves specifc pressure/time window, it will be ignored. Signifcant
fexibility is achieved here as the eRED valve allows for unplanned testing
without opening, yet the tool can be opened at any time.
On completion of all operations both eRED valves are instructed to open.
Te annulus eRED valve can be lef permanently downhole, while the
tubing eRED valve can be retrieved on wireline via the lock assembly.
OTHER OPTIONS - Tere are several methods of activating an eRED
valve to open or close. In this case, they could have been set to close on a
time delay and re-opened on a pressure/time signal.

CONVENTIONAL vs eRED VALVE OPERATIONS - Te following table compares the operational steps involved in a typical
conventional operation versus the same operation undertaken using two eRED valves.

Total EIGHT wireline runs Total ONE wireline runs 46 hrs
* Te time saved estimate is based on Halliburton experience in the North Sea and an assumed water depth of 1,000 f and well depth of 8,000 f. Time allowed for single
eRED valve operation = 1 hour. ** Each eRED valve is set up with a unique pressure/time window, enabling independent communication with each one.
THE eRED VALVE ADVANTAGE - In this example, two eRED valves removed the need for redeploying the dual-bore riser and
eliminated all the associated costs and risks of seven wireline runs, providing an estimated saving of at least $920,000.
Typical cost saving based on a daily rig rate of $500,000 (approx 20,000 per hour) = 46 x 20,000 = $920,000
To maximize savings, a third eRED valve could be used within the main string as a deep-set barrier. Additionally our eRED-LV barrier
valve efectively provides the option of a tubing mounted, full-bore valve to control well fuids during completion deployment.
