Vision 2020 of Rajasthan

State government is quite enthusiastic towards fisheries development plan with the aim
to achieve potential fish production of 88277 mt. by increasing both productivity & area
through stock enhancement with appropriate seed size & quality by the end of 2020 and
fish production of 1,36,311 tons with average productivity of 725 kg/ha by adopting
intensive fish culture technology beyond 2020. It is estimated that more than 70,000
livelihood may be sustained directly in fisheries sector by the end of 2020.

State government has already started innovative scheme for promoting hatcheries and
rearing area in private sector under RKVY. Government has also planned to establish
hygienic and modern fish markets in all districts having moderate and high potential
for fisheries. Establishment of modern wholesale market in the Jaipur city has started
this venture.


The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB)
Present Status and scenario of fisheries in Rajasthan
State has made steady growth in inland fisheries during last three decades. Fish
production has increased from 14000 mt. in 1980-81 to 28200 mt. in 2010-11. Area under
fish culture and fish production both have gone up. Annual growth rate has gone 12.6%
between 2000-01 and 2010-11 as compared to the national average 8%. About 60% of the
total fish production comes from reservoir and the rest from tank & ponds. While the
productivity of large reservoir (55 kg/ha.) is above the national average, productivity of
small water bodies (1.2 mt/ha/yr) is far less than the national average. State ranks 18th
in the country as regards the fish production.
The NFDB has taken up fisheries development activities all over the country in the
following sectors:
1. Reservoir fisheries development
2. Intensive aquaculture in ponds and tanks
3. Modernization of harbours
4. Hygienic development of whole sale and retail markets
5. Mariculture
6. Training to fishermen/fish farmers and
7. Capacity building of the fishery professionals

Ornamental Fisheries Training and Research Institute (OFTRI), UDAIPUR
Ornamental Fisheries Training and Research Institute (OFTRI) is a private sector
institution established in 2006 to develop and promote Ornamental Fisheries in the
country. Ornamental fisheries include production of ornamental fishes, aquarium
fabrication and trading, aquarium maintenance etc. The hobby of keeping an aquarium
at home and workplaces is becoming popular in all parts of the country including metro
cities, large cities, towns and villages. As such, the demand of aquarium and
ornamental fish is increasing at 20% annually in the country. In view of the increasing
demand many aquarium shops have come up in many parts of the country during the
last decade but many of these business units are established by untrained persons who
do not have any experience or formal education in the trade and are not able to impart
knowledge to naive hobbyist. It leads to failure of both the trader and the hobbyist.
Secondly, the number of aquarium shops and ornamental fish production units is much
less than the total demands.
The College of Fisheries, Udaipur
The College of Fisheries, Udaipur was established in November 2003 by upgrading the
Department of Limnology & Fisheries of Agriculture faculty.. However, a formal
approval for the establishment of this new college has been received in April 2010 from
the state government. This was created with the primary aim of providing professional
education in fisheries.
