Instructions for CiS Rating System 2012

GENERAL INFORMATION
Each player can have only one FIDE ID. This FIDE ID applies to the calculation of several ratings:
FIDE rating, FIDE rapid rating (to be in operation soon), FIDE blitz rating (to be in operation
soon) and Chess in Schools (CiS) rating.
When a child registers at sm.fide.com he/she gets a FIDE ID. If such person already had a FIDE
ID before that registration, his/her FIDE ID remains and a new one is not given. After upgrading
to Premium at psm.fide.com, a child gets a CiS rating.
The vast majority of games played by Premium Student Members (PSMs) will be played with CiS
rating, but if a member plays in a FIDE rated tournament, his/her results are calculated for the
FIDE (classic, blitz or rapid) Rating List (FRL). But those results are not automatically transferred
to the CiS system (nor from the CiS system to the FRL). They need to be entered separately for
FRL & for CiS.
PSMs with CiS rating, can have all their results calculated for CiS rating. That includes games
against unrated players and players outside the CiS system thanks to the activity bonus. These
games do not need to be in official FIDE tournaments, nor official Federation events; any
games, played anywhere, with or without clocks can be rated.
The activity bonus (+1 point for any game regardless whether the opponent has any rating and
regardless whether this game was played in an official tournament or in school) is a special
feature of the CiS rating system.

Please note that the rating calculations for game results that have been entered into the CiS
system are only made after they have been approved. The Approval procedure is described
on page 12. Please dont forget no approval, no rating!

Instructions for CiS Rating System 2012

Key Features of the CiS Rating System:
(1) Initial Rating between 600 and 900 based on age
Any player entering the CiS rating pool will immediately receive an initial rating based on their
exact current age. A player aged 6 years or younger will receive a rating of 600, a player aged
12 years or older will receive a rating of 900, and players with an age between 6.00 years and
12.00 years will receive a proportional rating between 600 and 900, depending on age. Each
completed month beyond a player's 6th birthday will count for 4.167 (i.e., 50 divided by 12)
extra rating points in the calculation of this initial rating, so that the possible initial ratings are
600, 604, 608, , 892, 896, 900.
(2) Education Bonus of 5 points per monthly lesson (maximum nine lessons per year)
Any player acknowledging completion of a month's lesson will receive an immediate Education
Bonus of 5 rating points from that lesson. Players can only receive this bonus once during each
calendar month, and cannot receive more than 45 Education Bonus points in a single school year.
(3) Renewal Bonus of 30 points for annual renewal
Any player renewing their membership for an additional year will receive an immediate Renewal
Bonus of 30 rating points.
Players can only receive this bonus once during each school year. If the player's rating, after
receiving the Renewal Bonus, is still below the age-based initial rating that a new player at
their current age would receive, then upon renewal their rating will be elevated to that level
instead.
(4) Linear Elo adjustment for CiS-rated games
For each game played by a CiS-rated player against a CiS-rated opponent, the player's CiS rating
will be adjusted in an Elo-like way, but with a simple Linear Elo relationship (and K=40) that
does not depend on an expectancy table lookup. A player with a 400-point rating advantage will
have an expected score of 100%, and a difference in rating of more than 400 points shall be
counted for rating purposes as though it were a difference of 400 points.
(5) Rating Adjustment extremely easy to calculate
Since the maximum effective rating difference is 400, and the K-factor for Linear Elo is 40,
players can easily calculate their rating adjustment from a game without needing a calculator or
an expectancy table. The rating change from a draw will simply be the quantity: [rating
difference divided by 10], and the rating adjustment from a win or loss will be that same quantity
plus/minus 20. For instance, if your rating is 720 and my rating is 750, then the rating difference
is -30 and so I will lose 3 rating points (that's -30 divided by 10) if we draw the game. Taking
that value (-3) and adding/subtracting 20 tells me that I will gain 17 rating points if I win the
game, and I will lose 23 rating points if I lose the game.
(6) Activity Bonus of 1 point per game played
For each game played during a calendar month (up to a maximum of 20 during that
month), a player will receive an Activity Bonus of 1 rating point. This bonus will apply, whether
4
Instructions for CiS Rating System 2012

the opponent is FIDE-rated, or CiS-rated, or neither, or both, whether s/he is registered with
FIDE or not. After 20 such games in a single month, games played against CiS-rated opponents
will still affect a player's rating, but only from the Linear Elo adjustment; the Activity Bonus will
no longer apply during that calendar month. Note that you will still be motivated to play a game
even if matched against an opponent rated 400+ points lower, despite your expected score being
1.00, since you can still receive the Activity Bonus of 1 point for playing the game.
(7) CiS ratings kept separate from FIDE ratings
When a CiS-rated player faces an opponent, it does not matter whether that opponent
has a FIDE rating. The game will still count toward an Activity Bonus (assuming the player has
not reached the monthly maximum of 20), but the Linear Elo system only applies if both players
are CiS-rated. Thus the pool of CiS ratings and the pool of FIDE ratings do not affect each
other. Nevertheless, it will be very important in upcoming years to understand the relationships
(and possible conversions) between CiS ratings and regular FIDE ratings.
In order to support this future understanding, we will track a detailed history of all events
(lessons, renewals, all games played against FIDE-member opponents with/without FIDE
ratings, and with/without CiS ratings). This history will eventually enable us to improve the
quality of the CiS ratings and bring them more in line with the FIDE rating pool.
(8) Encouraging weaker players to enter FIDE rating pool
We cannot draw concrete conclusions about the true strength of scholastic players, because we
don't have games between scholastic players and FIDE-rated opponents. In order to bring these
two groups closer together, so that we can eventually calibrate the CiS ratings against the FIDE
rating pool, we recommend lowering the minimum FIDE rating to 1000 or even lower, and
providing financial incentives to member federations for weaker players to obtain FIDE ratings.
Details about the FIDE Rating system can be found on the main FIDE web site www.fide.com.

HOW TO FOR COUNTRY COORDINATORS AND SCHOOL MONITORS
Each CiS Project Country should have its own Country Rating Coordinator. Countries with huge
numbers of CiS rated children can also appoint Local CiS Rating Coordinators.
Access to the administration page of psm.ratings.fide.com is given to authorized persons by CiS
management. Your contact is the CiS General Coordinator (details below).
Country coordinators or CiS management can authorize school monitors teachers from local
schools - to enter the results of their school tournaments and games by themselves. School
monitors from non-project countries can be authorized by CiS administration. These monitors
can even be children appointed by the teacher to do the job under the teachers supervision.
CiS RATING ACCESS STRUCTURE
1. PSM management appoint Country Rating Administrators, School Monitors and have
overall control
2. Country Rating Administrators - have access to the events from their country uploaded
by anyone, can appoint School Monitors from their country, should approve the events
from their country
3. School Monitors - have access only to the events that they uploaded themselves, can
approve the events they enter.
HOW TO ADD SCHOOL MONITOR (FOR COUNTRY ADMINS)
1. Enter psm.xxxxxxx.fide.com/admin with your personal login and password.
[xxxxxxx being your country]
2. Choose Rating Admins on the left bar

HOW TO ENTER RESULTS
The authorization page looks like this:

Enter your username and password and click on Login.
After entering the site, there is a bar on the left-hand side:

In order to register a new event for CiS rating, make the following steps:
7
Instructions for CiS Rating System 2012

1. Click on Register event. Then Click on Add new event:

Enter the details of the event.

Event name: the title of the event, for example Slovakia Youth Championship Girls
Under 10 or April friendlies
Enter City: the town where the event was held
Start date: the date when the event started
End date: the date when the event ended
Total rounds: the number of rounds played in the event
Note: Most events and all tournaments have rounds. If there are no rounds, but just
several (or even just one) games played, please set the number of rounds to 1. For
example, if a school had 3 game sessions in a day, a school monitor can enter it as
Sunshine school April 20 Chess Event with total round 3 (where each round will
mean one playing session)

Country: National rating administrators and school monitors will automatically see their
country in this field.
Click on SAVE. Now you have created a new event and the next step is to add game results to
this event.

2. Add game results to the event
On the left bar choose Add Event Games
8
Instructions for CiS Rating System 2012

Choose the event that you just registered and click on SHOW.

You will get two options (Upload Tournament File and Manual Entry Form) to enter the results
of the games:

Option 1. Upload Tournament File
This is an option for advanced users of chess software. If you have a program like SwissMaster
(Swiss Manager) and use it for pairings and/or for reporting the event for FIDE rating, then it
will be easier for you to use this option. You have to create a Report File in this program and
then upload it to the server by clicking on Upload Tournament File. The system will
automatically adjust it and the game results will appear after the upload.
9
Instructions for CiS Rating System 2012

NOTE that the Report file that you upload should be the same that is usually done for FIDE to
calculate the tournament for FIDE rating, which means it should read the names/surnames in
LATIN letters and complete other usual FIDE requirements.
Option 2. Manual Entry Form
To use the manual entry form you need to make two steps.
Step 1: Add Players.
Click on Add Players. Here you can add players whose games you want to calculate for rating.

You can add players by choosing from the dropdown list (it will automatically have all the
players from the country of the event) or by entering their FIDE ID or last name in the white
line. Each time you choose a player, click on add and then add the next one. Lets add some
players.

10
Instructions for CiS Rating System 2012

You can see that on the right of every player is a sign delete - in case you entered this person
incorrectly, just click on it and this player will be deleted from the list. But what if some player
(for example, Andrejov, Samuel in our list) played a game against a player who is not registered
in CiS? This game should still be counted because it matters for Samuels activity bonus (+1
point for each game!). For such purposes there is an anonymous player which you can see as
AAAA, aaaa, 0000 at the first position of the dropdown list. Use this player as a universal
tool to indicate any player without CiS registration and rating! Lets add him to our list of
participants.

11

When you have entered all the players whose games should be calculated for rating, click on
CLOSE

Step 2. Add Game Results.
Now we are ready to enter the results of the games. When you click on Add Games Results
(bottom illustration on page 8), you will see:

If the games have been played in a tournament, you can select a round from the dropdown list
(above RESULT).
Lets say, in the first round of our event Jakub Zahorcek played against Samuel Andrejov with
White and won, Samuel Bagin made a draw with Black against Lukas Zboraj and both Tadeas
Vrican and Samuel Balazi lost with White to somebody who is not CiS rated.
12
Instructions for CiS Rating System 2012

The player who played with White should be indicated on the left. On the right opposite to him
is the player who played with Black. Between them enter the result. 1-0 means that White
won, 0-1 means that Black won, = means that the game ended in a draw.
This is what we get:

If everything is right, click on SAVE. Now you can see that these games have been added:

13
Instructions for CiS Rating System 2012

You can now add more game results by repeating Step 2. Add Games Results.
Note: If you have entered a game by mistake, you can delete it by clicking on the red button
with cross next to that game.
HOW TO APPROVE EVENTS
Country administrators have the right to approve the events entered by themselves and by the
school monitors from their country. School monitors can approve only the events that they
themselves added.
To approve an event, click on Approve Events on the left menu and then click on Approve
to the right of the event that is supposed to be approved.
