Summary
165 vehicle/pedestrian/bicycle collisions were reported in the January-
August 2014 period in the Halifax Regional Police service area.
Of these collisions, 32 involved bicycles.
The remaining 133 incidents were strictly vehicle/pedestrian collisions,
with 135 pedestrian victims.

Collision Types
In both 2013 and 2014 the majority of
vehicle/pedestrian collisions reported from
January to August occurred in crosswalks.

The proportion of reported collisions that took
place in parking lots decreased in the 2014
period compared to 2013.

Injuries
83% of the 135 pedestrian victims
experienced either no injury or minor
injury in the reported incidents between
January and August 2014.

There has been one fatality so far this year.

One driver reported a minor injury.


Pedestrian Characteristics
26% of all pedestrian victims were in the 21-30 years age range and 20% were
in the 31-40 years age range.

Driver Characteristics
Males accounted for approx. 67% of drivers involved in the reported vehicle/pedestrian
collisions during the Jan-Aug 2014 period. Note: Excludes 9 cases where driver sex was unknown.

This is in contrast to the proportion of males of approximate driving age in HRM, which is nearly
48% according to the HRM 2011 census.

Peak Collision Times
Reported vehicle/pedestrian collisions peaked during the 3-5pm time period during Jan-Aug 2014, followed by
the 6-8pm time period.

Weekdays were the most common days for vehicle/pedestrian collisions, with the exception of Wednesdays.
This is in contrast to the 2013 trend, where Wednesday was the peak day for collisions.

Note: Due to the small numbers, these trends cannot be deemed statistically significant.
