'&( INTRO)UCTION
Crankcase is the area of compressor which contain mostly moving parts like,
crankshaft, connecting rod, main bearing, big end bearings, crosshead and
lubricating oil pump and filter oil seals and in some design also oil cooler located
into the crankcase. Fig. 10-7-1 shows a vertical compressor crankcase.

-&( CRANKS/AFT
Crankshaft are used in single stage or multistage are normally with single crankpin.
ee Fig. 10-7-0 and it is assembled in the bedplate by passing it through the
opening on the bearing housing side of the bedplate. -he main crankshaft
supporting bearings may be full floating bushing bearings or antifriction roller7ball
bearings. -he outerside housing of the bearings sealed with oil seals. 8henever it
is necessary to check or replace the bearings it is re9uired to remove the crankshaft
from housing.

-&( RE2UIRE1ENT FOR RE1OVAL OF CRANKS/AFT
1. Compressor must be depressuri:ed and isolated.
/. $il must be drained.
0. heaves must be removed ;follow section of belt drive care<
1. Connecting rod must be removed ;follow section removal of connecting rod<
2. &e9uire all necessary tools
3. &e9uire overhead hoist= sligs and nylon belts
7. $il seals= bearing if re9uire

2. upport the crankshaft in a hori:ontal position and remove from the frame by
pulling it straight out through the main bearing housing opening.
'$-"? 1. #n some design after step ;0< necessary to remove the counter
balance weight from the crank web because the bearing
housing opening is not enough to remove with counter weight.
/. 'ever use wire sligs directly on bearings, better use nylon belt
for lifting the crankshaft.
0. @eep straight on soft surface.
-&0 CLEANIN4 AN) INS3ECTION OF 3ARTS
1. Clean the parts by recommended solvent.
/. >isual inspect the crank shaft and bearings.
0. )easure the inner diameter of housing in different places.
1. )easure the outside diameter of main bearing Aournals.
0&( CONCLUSION
1. #f the clearances of the bearings more than the recommended, replace them.
For replacement see section replacement of bearings.
/. #f found scoring or minor scratches on Aournals polish it.
5&( REASSE1BL6 INSTRUCTION
1. &eassembly procedure is the Aust reverse of disassembly procedure but
follow some instructions.
/. +lways use soft nylon belts for lifting the crankshaft.
0. %se sufficient lubricating oil while sliding the crankshaft in bushing.
1. +lways use new gaskets and seals.
7&( RE3LACE1ENT OF BEARIN4 OR BUS/IN4
1. 'ormally flywheel side bushing are fi6ed in bushing housing from inside the
crankcase.
/. #n this stage the crankshaft and oil seals are removed from housing.
0. %se a hollow tube from the flywheel side and push that by hammer or puller.
1. Clean the housing and fi6ed a new bus as reverse operation of removal.
2. %se same procedure for removing and fi6ing the pump side bushing.
!"C#F#C C$%&" F$& "'(#'""& )"C*+'#C+, )+#'-"'+'C" )$.%," 10

'$-"? 1. Be certain that all parts are cleaned before assembly.
/. %se only original bushings
0. #t is recommended both bushing must be replaced at the same time.
1. -hese bushing must be free to float on the crankshaft and in the
bearing housing. -his floating may be from 0.1 mm to 1 mm and can
check fi6ing the dial indicator on the end of shaft and moving the
shaft a6ially.
8&( RE1OVAL AN) RE3LACE1ENT OF OIL SEALS
#n some design oil seal fi6ed in main housing casting as shown in Fig. 10-7-1 and in
some design these seals fi6ed in bearing cover which can easily removed from
housing and seals can replace for replacement of the seals as mentioned in Fig. 10-
7-1 follow instructions.

8ork a screwdriver or similar tool along the Aoint between the outer surface of the
seal and the bearing housing counterbore. 8ork the tool around the seal until the
seal is completely removed from the counterbore. -he seal will then slide off the
crankshaft.
'$-"? ince it is very probable that the seals will be damaged while being
removed, be certain that new replacements are available.
8&' RE3LACE1ENT OF SEALS 9Fi*& '(-7-5:
1. -horoughly clean the crankshaft and bearing housing counterbore, and
remove any nicks or sharp edges at the keyway. #t is recommended that
shim stock or tape be used over the keyway to protect the lip on the seals
during assembly.
/. -he lip section tends to distort if forced abruptly over the shaft. #t is,
therefore, recommended that the shaft and the lip of the seal be well coated
with oil and a rotary screw motion be used while pushing it over the shaft.
0. lip the oil seal on the shaft and align with seal housing.
1. %se a metal tube over the shaft to force the seal evenly into its seat.
