About Therapeutic Taping
Therapeutic taping is a rehabilitative tool for increasing
muscle and sensory functions. The tape has a similar
elasticity to skin and when applied directly to the skin, the
tape can be used to correct oral posture, facilitate muscles
that are weak or relax muscles that are too tense. Therapeutic
tape has also been reported to increase sensory receptors,
blood flow and lymphatic drainage. The taping does not take
the place of therapy but is intended to enhance the therapy as
an additional therapy tool.

Guidelines
1. Your childs therapist will indentify the type of tape
and placement technique that will best improve the
desired movement or muscle function.
2. If your child has sensitive skin, a protective liquid will
be applied to make tape removal easier.
3. Most types of tape can be left on for up to 3 days.
4. Skin that is red, swelling or blistering around the tape
may be a sign of an adverse reaction. If you see this or
if your child complains or exhibits signs of discomfort,
REMOVE THE TAPE.
Applying & Removing the Tape

Application
Prep the skin by thoroughly washing the area and
allowing to dry COMPLETELY. Do not apply tape to wet
skin. If allergies to adhesive, may apply skin barrier or
Milk of Magnesia to surface (let dry) before applying tape.
Rub frequently when applying. Heat from rubbing makes
the tape stick. It can resist water, food, and drool for up to
a few days when/if appropriate.

Removal
Soak tape with cooking oil (ex: olive oil) or adheasive
remover for 3-5 minutes.
While holding tape upward, slowly pull the skin away from
the tape.
Wash the skin thoroughly. The skin may be slightly red or
dotted, which should go away within 24-48 hours. Apply
aloe Vera gel if desired. If the skin is extremely red or
blistered contact your physician.
