Lay ths equpment on a relable fat surface before settng t up.

from overheatng. DO NOT COVER THE OPENINGS.

Assembly Precautons
The components ncluded n ths package are prone to damage from electrostatc
dscharge (ESD). Please adhere to the followng nstructons to ensure successful
computer assembly.
Always turn of the power supply and unplug the power cord from the power outlet
before nstallng or removng any computer component.
Ensure that all components are securely connected. Loose connectons may cause
the computer to not recognze a component or fal to start.
Hold the manboard by the edges to avod touchng senstve components.
It s recommended to wear an electrostatc dscharge (ESD) wrst strap when handlng
the manboard to prevent electrostatc damage. If an ESD wrst strap s not avalable,
dscharge yourself of statc electrcty by touchng another metal object before han-
dlng the manboard.
Store the manboard n an electrostatc sheldng contaner or on an antstatc pad
whenever the manboard s not nstalled.
Before turnng on the computer, ensure that there are no loose screws or metal com-
ponents on the manboard or anywhere wthn the computer case.
Do not use the computer n a hgh-temperature envronment.
Do not boot the computer before nstallaton s completed. Ths could cause perma-
nent damage to the components as well as njury to the user.
If you need help durng any nstallaton step, please consult a certfed computer tech-
ncan.

CPU1: LGA2011 CPU Socket
Important
Overheatng
Overheatng can serously damage the CPU and manboard. Always make sure the
coolng fans work properly to protect the CPU from overheatng. Be sure to apply an
even layer of thermal paste (or thermal tape) between the CPU and the heatsnk to
enhance heat dsspaton.
Replacng the CPU
When replacng the CPU, always turn of the systems power supply and unplug the
power supplys power cord to ensure the safety of the CPU.
Overclockng
Ths manboard s desgned to support overclockng. Before attemptng to overclock,
please make sure that all other system components can tolerate overclockng. Any at-
tempt to operate beyond product specfcatons s not recommend. MSI does not guar-
antee the damages or rsks caused by nadequate operaton beyond product specfca-
tons.

CPU & Cooler Installaton
When nstallng a CPU, always remember to nstall a CPU cooler. A CPU cooler s
necessary to prevent overheatng and mantan system stablty. Follow the steps below
to ensure correct CPU and CPU cooler nstallaton. Wrong nstallaton can damage both
the CPU and the manboard.
1. Open hnge lever. You can dentfy the hnge lever as below shown, t wth a
nterlockng feature on the other end.

7. Close the actve lever wth a smooth unform moton and latch to the socket.

5. Lne up the CPU to ft the CPU socket. Be sure to hold the CPU by the base wth the
metal contacts facng downward. The algnment keys on the CPU wll lne up wth
the edges of the CPU socket to ensure a correct ft.
6. Carefully close the load plate and remove the plastc protectve cap.

Mountng Screw Holes
When nstallng the manboard, frst nstall the necessary mountng stands requred for
a manboard on the mountng plate n your computer case. If there s an I/O back plate
that came wth the computer case, please replace t wth the I/O backplate that came
wth the manboard package. The I/O backplate should snap easly nto the computer
case wthout the need for any screws. Algn the mountng plates mountng stands wth
the screw holes on the manboard and secure the manboard wth the screws provded
wth your computer case. The locatons of the screw holes on the manboard are shown
below. For more nformaton, please refer to the manual that came wth the computer
case.
Important
Install the manboard on a fat surface free from unnecessary debrs.
To prevent damage to the manboard, any contact between the manboard crcutry
and the computer case, except for the mountng stands, s prohbted.
Please make sure there are no loose metal components on the manboard or wthn
the computer case that may cause a short crcut of the manboard.

Installng Memory Modules
Unlock the DIMM slot by pushng the mountng clp to the sde. Vertcally nsert the
memory module nto the DIMM slot. The memory module has an of-center notch on
the bottom that wll only allow t to ft one way nto the DIMM slot.
Push the memory module deep nto the DIMM slot. The plastc clp at the sde of the
DIMM slot wll automatcally close when the memory module s properly seated and
an audble clck should be heard.
Manually check f the memory module has been locked n place by the DIMM slots
sde clp.

Vdeo/ Graphcs Cards
If avalable, ths manboard takes advantage of the CPUs ntegrate graphcs processor,
but dscrete vdeo cards can be nstalled by way of the manboards expanson slots.
Addng on one or more dscrete vdeo cards wll sgnfcantly boost the systems graphcs
performance. For best compatblty, MSI graphcs cards are recommended.
Sngle Vdeo Card Installaton
Determne what type of expanson slot(s) the vdeo card wll use. Locate the expan-
son slot(s) on the manboard. Remove any protectve expanson slot covers from
the computer case.
Lne up the vdeo card on top of the expanson slot(s) wth the dsplay ports facng
out of the computer case. For a sngle vdeo card nstallaton, usng the PCI_E1 slot
s recommended.
Push the vdeo card nto ts expanson slot(s). Dependng on the expanson slot(s)
used, there should be clp(s) on the expanson slot(s) that wll lock n place.
If needed, screw the edge of the graphcs card to the computer case. Some vdeo
cards mght requre a power cable drectly from the power supply.
Please consult your vdeo cards manual for further nstructons regardng drver
nstallaton or other specal settngs.

AMD CrossFre (Mult-GPU) Technology
AMD CrossFre s a mult-GPU performance gamng platform. By lnkng together two
or more dscrete GPUs, CrossFre can sgnfcant mprove system graphcs perfor-
mance. It allows the ablty to scale a systems graphcs power as needed, makng t the
most scalable gamng platform. Ths manboard wll automatcally detect CrossFre
technology and make changes n the BIOS as needed. Follow the nstructons below to
ensure a successful two-way CrossFre nstallaton.
Install two AMD Radeon HD graphcs cards nto the PCI_E1 & PCI_E4 expanson
slots.
Wth the two cards nstalled, two CrossFre Vdeo Lnk cable are requred to con-
nect the graphcs cards. Attach one sde of the cable on each of the cards by way
of the metal contacts (please refer to the pcture below). Please note that although
two graphcs cards have been nstalled, only the dsplay ports on the graphcs card
nstalled n the frst PCIe x16 slot wll work. All dsplays should be connected to ths
graphcs card.

NVIDIA
SLI Technology
NVIDIAs SLI (Scalable Lnk Interface) technology allows two or more GPUs to run n
tandem wthn a system to acheve sgnfcant graphcs performance gans. To utlze
ths technology, the GPU cards must be connected by a SLI Vdeo Lnk card.
If you ntend to use SLI mode, please follow the nstructons below to properly set up SLI
mode. The nstructons below are meant for a two vdeo card SLI confguraton.

CPUFAN1,SYSFAN1~4: Fan Power Connectors
The fan power connectors support system coolng fans wth +12V. If the manboard has
a System Hardware Montor chpset on-board, you must use a specally desgned fan
wth a speed sensor to take advantage of the CPU fan control. Remember to connect
all system fans. Some system fans may not connect to the manboard and wll nstead
connect to the power supply drectly. A system fan can be plugged nto any avalable
system fan connector.

wth lnear mode. The Control Center II utlty can be nstalled to automatcally control
the fan speeds accordng to the CPUs and systems temperature.
If there are not enough ports on the manboard to connect all system fans, adapters
are avalable to connect a fan drectly to a power supply.
Before frst boot up, ensure that there are no cables mpedng any fan blades.

USB 2.0 Bracket (optonal)
The JUSB3 (red mark) connector supports MSIs new SuperCharger technology
whch provdes qucker USB chargng of your cellular phone or other USB-powered
devces. To enable ths feature, please nstall the MSI SuperCharger applcaton on
your computer. When the SuperCharger applcaton s turned on, the JUSB3 connector
wll convert data channels to extra power channels to quckly charge your connected
devce. Please note that when the SuperCharger applcaton s turned on, data
transmsson and synchronzaton over the JUSB3 connector wll not functon. To enable
the JUSB3 connector to functon as a normal USB 2.0 connector, please turn of the
SuperCharger applcaton. When the computer s n stand-by or hbernaton mode (S3/
S4/ S5) SuperCharger mode wll automatcally be enabled.
Important
Note that the VCC and GND pns must be connected correctly to avod possble
damage.
Please only connect one devce per USB port to ensure stable chargng.
SuperCharger Technology s only avalable on select MSI manboard models. Please
refer to the MSI webste to check f your manboard has SuperCharger technology.
For Pad, JUSB3 (red mark) can stll charge Pad n S3, S4, S5 state.
We recommend that dont dsconnect the devce when you charge t n S1 state.

Buttons
The manboard has numerous on-board buttons to control varous functons. Ths
secton wll explan how to change your manboards functons through the use of these
on-board buttons.
OC1: OC Gene Button
Ths button s used to automatcally overclock the system. Press ths button once
whle the system s of to enable OC Gene. The button wll lock reman depressed
untl t s pushed agan to dsable OC Gene. On the next boot, the OC Gene utlty wll
automatcally overclock the CPU settngs to optmal performance values. To dsable
OC Gene, power of the system and press the OC Gene button agan. The button wll
depress and the CPU confguraton settngs wll return to normal values.

the OC Gene functon.
We do not guarantee the OC Gene overclockng range or the damages/rsks caused
by overclockng behavor.
It s possble to dsable the OC Gene functon n the BIOS setup. Please refer to the
BIOS secton of the manual for nstructons on how to turn of OC Gene from the
BIOS.
The usage of OC Gene s at the users own rsk. Overclockng s never guaranteed
by MSI.

JBAT1: Clear CMOS Jumper
There s CMOS RAM onboard that s external powered from a battery located on the
manboard to save system confguraton data. Wth the CMOS RAM, the system can

to clear the system confguraton, set the jumpers to clear the CMOS RAM.

Swtch
MULTI_BIOS_SWITCH: Mult BIOS Swtch
Ths manboard has two ndependent BIOS ROMs (Labeled A and B, default BIOS
ROM s A). If one s crashed, you can shft to the other for bootng by sldng the swtch.
In addton, these two BIOS ROMs do not have the Auto Recovery feature, you need to
mantan or update the BIOS verson by yourself.

BIOS recovery usng the M-fash utlty:
1. Ensure that the system s swtched of.
2. Boot up the system wth the operatonal BIOS ROM by swtchng the Mult-BIOS
swtch.
3. Enter the BIOS setup Utltes M-Flash Save BIOS to storage and then save
the fle to a bootable USB pen drve (root folder).
4. Swtch back to the BIOS ROM that needs to be recovered.
5. Choose Select one fle to update BIOS and recover the BIOS ROM wth the fle
saved n the USB pen drve.
Important
Do not use the BIOS swtch when system s bootng up.

Drvers and Utltes
After you nstall the operatng system you wll need to nstall drvers to maxmze the
performance of the new computer you just bult. MSI manbaord comes wth a Drver
Dsc. Drvers allow the computer to utlze your manboard more efcently and take
advantage of any specal features we provde.
You can protect your computer from vruses by nstallng the bundled securty program.
The bundle also ncludes a varety of powerful and creatve utltes.
Total Installer
Total Installer s very easy to use and does a great job of fndng necessary drvers.
Please follow the steps below to nstall drvers and utltes for your new computer.
Insert MSI Drver Dsc nto the optcal drve. The setup screen wll automatcally
appear f autorun s enabled n OS.
Clck Total Installer. A popup dalog wll appear lstng all necessary drvers.

Enterng
Power on the computer and the system wll start the Power On Self Test (POST) pro-
cess. When the message below appears on the screen, please <DEL> key to enter
CLICK BIOS II:
Press DEL key to enter Setup Menu, F11 to enter Boot Menu
If the message dsappears before you respond and you stll need to enter CLICK BIOS
II, restart the system by turnng the computer OFF then back ON or pressng the RESET
button. You may also restart the system by smultaneously pressng <Ctrl>, <Alt>, and
<Delete> keys.
Important
The tems under each BIOS category descrbed n ths chapter are under contnuous
update for better system performance. Therefore, the descrpton may be slghtly dfer-

SETTINGS - Use ths menu to specfy your settngs for chpset features and

OC - Ths menu contans tems of the frequency and voltage adjustments. In-
creasng the frequency can get better performance, however hgh frequency
and heat can cause nstablty, we do not recommend general users to over-
clock.
ECO - Ths menu s related to energy-savng settngs.
BROWSER - Ths feature s used to enter the MSI Wnk web browser.
UTILITIES - Ths menu contans utltes for backup and update.
SECURITY - The securty menu s used to keep unauthorzed people from mak-

System Status
System Date
Ths allows you to set the system date that you want (usually the current date).
The format s <day> <month> <date> <year>.
day Day of the week, from Sun to Sat, determned by BIOS.
Read-only.
month The month from Jan. through Dec.
date The date from 1 to 31 can be keyed by numerc functon keys.
year The year can be adjusted by users.
System Tme
Ths allows you to set the system tme that you want (usually the current tme). The tme
format s <hour> <mnute> <second>.
SATA Port1~6
Shows devces connected to specfc SATA ports.
Important
If your devce s not dsplayed, turn of computer and re-check SATA cable and power
cable connectons to the devce.
System Informaton

PCI Latency Tmer
Controls how long each PCI devce can hold the bus before another takes over.
When set to hgher values, every PCI devce can conduct transactons for a longer
tme and thus mprove the efectve PCI bandwdth.
ACPI Settngs
ACPI Standby State
Specfes the power savng mode for ACPI functon
[S1] Sleep Mode. Hardware remans on.
[S3] Suspend to RAM. Turns of hardware. (Recommended)
Power LED
Confgures how the system uses power LEDs on the case to ndcate sleep/ suspend

Wndows XP s not natvely supported to be nstalled n the storage devce wth AHCI
mode. If you stll prefer to nstall Wndows XP as the operatng system, please refer

Restore after AC Power Loss
Ths tem specfes whether your system wll reboot after a power falure or nterrupt
occurs. Settngs are:
[Power Off] Always leaves the computer n the power off state.

[Last State] Restore the system to the status before power falure or nterrupt

Wndows 8 Confguraton
Wndows 8 Feature
When enabled, the system wll swtch to the UEFI mode to meet the Wndows 8 logo
requrement. Before enablng ths feld, please make sure all nstalled devces &
utltes (hardware & software) meet the Wndows 8 system requrements.
MSI Fast Boot
Ths settng enables or dsables the MSI Fast Boot functon.
Fast Boot
When enabled, some tems wll be actvated and users can use these tems to set
the Wndows 8 fast boot events. Fast Boot wll only be avalable When "MSI Fast
Boot" s dsabled.
Wake Up Event Setup
Wake Up Event By
Settng to [BIOS] actvates the followng felds, and use the followng felds to set the
wake up events. Settng to [OS], the wake up events wll be defned by OS.
Resume By RTC Alarm
The feld s used to enable or dsable the feature of bootng up the system on a
scheduled tme/date.

confguratons on the SPD. Selectng [Lnk] or [Unlnk] allows users to confgure the
DRAM tmngs for each channel and the followng related Advanced DRAM Confgura-
ton sub-menu manually.
Advanced DRAM Confguraton
Press <Enter> to enter the sub-menu. Ths sub-menu wll be actvated after settng [Lnk]
or [Unlnk] n DRAM Tmng Mode. User can set the memory tmng for each channel
of memory. The system may become unstable or unbootable after changng memory
tmng. If t occurs, please clear the CMOS data and restore the default settngs. (Refer
to the Clear CMOS jumper/ button secton to clear the CMOS data, and enter the BIOS
to load the default settngs.
Memory Fast Boot

Set the admnstratve password that wll be requred to enter the BIOS.

Set the user password that wll be requred to enter the operatng system.
Important
When selectng the Admnstratve / User Password tems, a password box wll appear
on the screen. Type the password then press <Enter>. The password typed now wll re-
place any prevous set password from CMOS memory. You wll be prompted to confrm
the password. You may also press <Esc> to abort the selecton.
To clear a set password, press <Enter> when you are prompted to enter a new pass-

Introducton
The manboard comes wth the Intel RAID controller that allows you to confgure SATA
hard drves as RAID sets.
Intel

RAID controller ofers RAID level 0 (Strpng), RAID level 1 (Mrrorng and Du-
plexng), RAID level 5 (Block Interleaved Dstrbuted Party), RAID level 10 (A Strpe of
Mrrors).
RAID 0 breaks the data nto blocks whch are wrtten to separate hard drves. Spread-
ng the hard drve I/O load across ndependent channels greatly mproves I/O perfor-
mance.
RAID 1 provdes data redundancy by mrrorng data between the hard drves and pro-
vdes enhanced read performance.
RAID 5 Provdes data strpng at the byte level and also strpe error correcton nforma-
ton. Ths results n excellent performance and good fault tolerance. Level 5 s one of the
most popular mplementatons of RAID.
RAID 10 Not one of the orgnal RAID levels, multple RAID 1 mrrors are created, and a
RAID 0 strpe s created over these.

The RSTe (Intel Rapd Storage Technology enterprse) Opton ROM should be nte-
grated wth the system BIOS on all manboards wth a supported Intel chpset. The Intel
RSTe Opton ROM s the Intel RAID mplementaton and provdes BIOS and DOS dsk
servces. Please use <Ctrl> + <I> keys to enter the Intel
RAID for Seral ATA status

screen, whch should appear early n system boot-up, durng the POST (Power-On Self
Test). Also, you need to enable the RAID functon n BIOS to create, delete and reset
RAID volumes.
Creatng, Deletng and Resettng RAID Volumes:
The Seral ATA RAID volume may be confgured usng the RAID Confguraton utlty
stored wthn the Intel RAID Opton ROM. Durng the Power-On Self Test (POST), the

In the Dsk feld, press <Enter> key and use <Space> key to select the dsks you
want to create for the RAID volume, then clck <Enter> key to fnsh selecton. Ths
feld wll become avalable accordng to the selected RAID level.
Then select the strp sze for the RAID array by usng the upper arrow
or down arrow keys to scroll through the avalable values, and pressng
the <Enter> key to select and advance to the next feld. The avalable val-
ues range from 4KB to 128 KB n power of 2 ncrements. The strp sze should
be chosen based on the planned drve usage. Here are some typcal values:
RAID0 -128KB / RAID10 - 64KB / RAID5 - 64KB. Ths feld wll become avalable
accordng to the selected RAID level.
Then select the capacty of the volume n the Capacty feld. The default value s the
maxmum volume capacty of the selected dsks.

Important
Snce you want to create two volumes, ths default sze (maxmum) needs to be re-
duced. Type n a new sze for the frst volume. As an example: f you want the frst
volume to span the frst half of the two dsks, re-type the sze to be half of what s shown
by default. The second volume, when created, wll automatcally span the remander of
two hard drves.

Delete RAID Volume
Here you can delete the RAID volume, but please be noted that all data on RAID
drves wll be lost.
Important
If your system currently boots to RAID and you delete the RAID volume n the Intel
RSTe Opton ROM, your system wll become un-bootable.
Select opton 2 Delete RAID Volume from the man menu screen and press <Enter>
key to select a RAID volume for deleton. Then press <Delete> key to delete the
selected RAID volume. The followng screen appears.

Select opton 3 Reset Dsks to Non-RAID and press <Enter> to delete the RAID
volume and remove any RAID structures from the drves. The followng screen

OS Support
Intel RSTe drver supports followng OS:
Wndows XP 64 bt only.
Wndows 7 32 bt and 64 bt.
Wndows Server 2008 SP2 32 bt and 64 bt.
Wndows Server 2008 R2 64 bt only
Wndows Server 2003.
New Wndows Installaton
The followng detals the nstallaton of the drvers whle nstallng operatng system.
When you start nstallng Wndows XP, you may encounter a message statng,
Setup could not determne the type of one or more mass storage devces nstalled
n your system. If ths s the case, then you are already n the rght place and are
ready to supply the drver. If ths s not the case, then press F6 when prompted at
the begnnng of Wndows setup.
Press the S key to select Specfy Addtonal Devce.
You should be prompted to nsert a foppy dsk contanng the Intel
RAID drver
nto the A: drve.
Note: For Wndows XP, you can use the USB foppy drve only.
For Wndows 7 you can use CD/ DVD/ USB drve.

Important
Please follow the nstructon below to make an Intel
RAID Drver for yourself.

Insert the MSI Drver Dsc nto the optcal drve.
Clck the Browse CD on the Setup screen.
Copy all the contents n \\Storage\Intel\RSTe to a formatted foppy dskette.

For Wndows 7: Durng the Op-

eratng system nstallaton, after selectng the locaton to nstall Vsta / Wndows 7
clck on Load Drver button to nstall a thrd party SCSI or RAID drver.
When prompted, nsert the foppy dsk or meda (CD/DVD or USB) you created n
step 3 and press Enter.
You should be shown a lst of avalable SCSI Adapters.
Select the approprate Intel RAID controller and press ENTER.
The next screen should confrm that you have selected the Intel
RAID controller.
Press ENTER agan to contnue.
You have successfully nstalled the Intel
Rapd Storage Technology enterprse

drver, and Wndows setup should contnue.
Leave the dsk n the foppy drve untl the system reboots tself. Wndows setup wll
need to copy the fles from the foppy agan after the RAID volume s formatted, and
Wndows setup starts copyng fles.

From Wndows, open the Control Panel from My Computer followed by the System
con.
Choose the Hardware tab, then clck the Devce Manager tab.
Clck the + n front of the SCSI and RAID Controllers hardware type. The drver

Degraded RAID Array
A RAID 1, RAID 5 or RAID 10 volume s reported as degraded when one of ts hard drve
members fals or s temporarly dsconnected, and data mrrorng s lost. As a result, the
system can only utlze the remanng functonal hard drve member. To re-establsh
data mrrorng and restore data redundancy, refer to the procedure below that corre-
sponds to the current stuaton.
Mssng Hard Drve Member
Make sure the system s powered of.
Reconnect the hard drve.
Reboot the system to Wndows; the rebuld wll occur automatcally.
Faled Hard Drve Member
Make sure the system s powered of.
Replace the faled hard drve wth a new one that s of equal or greater capacty.
Reboot the system to Intel RAID Opton ROM by press <Ctrl> and <I> keys smul-
taneously durng the Power-On Self Test (POST).
