Timeline for Cognitive Development from 0 19 years

Communication and Language
1 month



They make eye contact.
Are often able to imitate for example when
adults stick out their tongue, babies copy their
action.
Baby cries when hungry for a nappy change.
The baby may move eyes in the direction of a
sound.

1 - 4 months



Babies recognize the voice of their mother or
carer.
They try to interact with an adult by looking at
him face to face, listening vocalizing and moving
their arms and legs.
They continue making noises such as cooing or
gurgling.
Their cries become more expressive.
Babies feel distressed when they hear loud
noises.
Babies sucks or licks lips when they hear sound of
food or see food.
Is excited when hears sound of approaching food
steps.

4 6 months



Babies start babbling using mono and then later
double syllables such as ga ga and goo ga.
Talk to themselves in a tuneful sing-song voice.
Baby is aware of the presence of others and
starts communicating more.
Baby listens carefully to others sounds and starts
to imitate them and reacts to the tone others
voice.
Baby begins to laugh


6 - 9 months


Baby starts to understand words like come,
go, yes and no. They begin to use gestures.
They understand and obey the command no.
Babble becomes tuneful.
Babies can repeat sounds.
They understand their language and will not
respond to a foreign language

9 12 months


Baby starts understanding language better. They
can relate words to people, things and actions
and that there are certain words associated to
them.
Baby follows simple instructions like give
mummy a kiss.
They start saying mumma, dada and bye bye in
English contexts.
They repeat sounds
Deaf babies begin to learn sign language and stop
babbling by twelve months.
They speak 2 or six more recognizable words and
show that they understand many more.
Babbling develops more into speech.
When asked to handover something they give the
objects to adults and treat objects in an
appropriate way.

1 2 years


Children are becoming competent speakers of
languages.
Sometimes children over extend the use of a
word. For example all animals are given a certain
name.
The child talks about an absent object. By seeing
an empty plate he may be reminded of biscuits.
The child uses telegraphese, such as daddy gone
and calls self by name.
The child loves to name things and explain in a
word or two what they could do with it. For eg
a water bottle. As they drink they may say
watter.
The child can follow simple instructions such as
could you give me the ball.
Child loves to tell rhymes, share dance and songs
with others.

2 - 4 years





Child develops when, how and why questions and
wants to know reasons for certain things. They
want to understand how things work.
They start using past, present and future tenses.
Child can be taught to say his or her name,
address and age.
The child tries to accurately pronounce words
and begins to use grammar.
Child is happy with the nonsense words he or she
makes up and jokes using them.
Child beings to use plurals, pronouns, adjectives
etc.
Child enjoys stories and asks his favourite ones
again and again.
Children can stutter while speaking as their
thinking is faster than their speaking.
4 8 years


The child tries to understand the meaning of
words and uses adverbs and prepositions.
Child displays confidence in whatever he speaks.
Child can define objects and their function like
what is a bat and you can hit a ball.
The child begins to understand and enjoy stories.
The child begins to realize that different
situations require different ways of talking.

8 - 12 years


Child can understand and use complex sentences.
Child is very verbal and enjoys making up stories
and telling jokes.
The child knows how to use reference books with
better skills.
The child can write lengthy essays.
The child is able to write stories.
Can express imagination
Their writings are legible and grammatically
correct.
12 19 years


Young people of this age group have a fast and
legible style of handwriting.
The young person communicate with maturity
like adults.
Young person is able to process texts and
abstract meaning, relate word meanings and
contexts, understand punctuations and can use
syntax effectively.
