Where did these projects originate?
The proposed changes to Beacon Avenue S/14th
Avenue S come from the Southeast Transportation
Study, which involved an extensive outreach
process, including meetings with key community
leaders, a core community team of 25 organizations,
and public feedback on the draft study. Beacon
BIKES adopted the project in their 2011 Beacon
Hill Family Bicycle and Pedestrian Circulation
Plan. The improvements at 14th Avenue S and S
College Street were submitted by neighbors through
the Neighborhood Street Fund. The sidewalk on
Beacon Avenue S was identified as a top pedestrian
improvement in the citys 2010 Pedestrian Master
Plan.
Project Scope
Build sidewalk on the east side of
Beacon Avenue S
Install uphill bicycle lane on Beacon Avenue S
Formally close the north leg of 13th Avenue S
& Beacon Avenue S (now closed with barriers)
Add all-way stop and marked crosswalks at
14th Avenue S & Beacon Avenue S
Build curb bulbs 14th Avenue S &
Beacon Avenue S
Create southbound left/right only at 14th
Avenue S & Beacon Avenue S
Build curb ramps and bulbs at 14th Avenue S
& S College St
Benefits
This project will help make it safer and easier for
kids, neighbors and families to walk and bike in
your neighborhood. The planned improvements will
help reduce pedestrian crossing distances with the
addition of curb bulbs in several locations, provide
a continuous sidewalk on the east side of the street
on Beacon Ave S to connect the Mountains to Sound
Trail with the Beacon Hill business district and
reduce the amount of traffic on the non-arterial
section of 14th Avenue S.
Construction Timeline and Outreach
Work is anticipated to begin as early as October
and will continue into next year. The project team
anticipates the work will be completed in March
2015.
The final plans are available on the project webpage:
www.seattle.gov/transportation/
beaconsafetyconnections.htm
SDOT will continue to work with the community
throughout construction to answer questions and
address concerns.
S Holgate Street Bridge
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is relocating a water line
during the spring and summer of 2015. The project
to extend the sidewalk and create a continuous
pedestrian connection on the S Holgate Bridge will be
considered in conjunction with this SPU project and,
depending on funding, may be completed next year.
