Extended Biotic Index The determination of Extended Biotic Index (EBI) allows to simply and quickly estimate the water bodies quality state and to know the results of human pressure on water ecosystems.
Extended Biotic Index (EBI) is founded on the analyses of the modifications of macro-invertebrates communities living on river ecosystems substrata, caused by pollution elements and environmental alterations and with various sensitivity to change of environmental conditions. As the macro-invertebrates long life, the index supplies a time integrated information regarding the consequences caused on environment by various pollution elements (physical, chemical e biological causes). Centro ISIDE's technicians are able to care all the steps necessary to realize the determination of the Extended Biotic Index, respecting the standard of norms in force and analytical official methods (IRSA- CNR APAT): preliminary environmental analysis and study of possible causes of pollution and alteration; location of sampling points along the river, according to main natural, civil and industrial elements; sampling surveys managing and realizing; analyses of collected communities in laboratory and preliminary hypotheses control; determination of Extended Biotic Index and index values conversion on quality classes; data managing and processing and reports either in graphic and in tabular layout; quality maps of hydrographic systems, necessary to plan and manage monitoring surveys and to estimate the efficacy of possible reclamation. Moreover, high professionalism of Centro ISIDE's technicians in the ecological and hydro biological fields allow to experiment and test methodologies that assure maximum care and high attention during the sampling in areas with alternated periods of drought and high precipitations: no sampling after a period of drought or a time with elevate flood or high rain; no sampling below drainpipes or affluent; particular care to drift phenomena, because of sometimes it's possible to find taxa only occasionally presents in that environment but really transported by river stream to sample place. Because of its features, it's possible to use Extended Biotic Index with the aim to: realize preliminary quality diagnoses of a hydrographic systems; determine global quality of a river environment; control the temporal evolution of quality; value the consequences caused by pollution drainpipes; estimate the consequences caused by physics transformations of a river; esteem self depurative capability of a water body; realize ecologic video surveys of a river.
