The University of Adelaide offers two
packaged Academic English Pathways for
students that have not met the minimum
English language entry requirements of their
undergraduate or postgraduate program.

Academic English - PEP Pathway: This
is a direct entry pathway into further studies
at the University of Adelaide. The length
of your program depends on your English
prociency test score. If you successfully
complete the Pre-enrolment English Program
(PEP) you do not need to sit another
English test before you enter your university
program.
Academic English - GEAP Pathway:
This is a packaged program involving a
mixture of General English for Academic
Purposes (GEAP) and Pre-Enrolment English
Program (PEP) classes.
A further English language test (IELTS, TOEFL,
CAE or Pearson) is required during the course;
either to allow transfer to PEP classes or to
give direct entry to your award program.

The program you are eligible for depends on
your English prociency test score and the
English language requirement for the
program you wish to study. Please refer to
the table below or visit our website for more
information.
How long will I need to study?
Academic English - PEP Pathway courses
are for 10, 15 or 20 weeks.
Academic English - GEAP Pathway
courses are for 30 or 35 weeks.

language requirement for the program you

A General English program for students
wanting to develop their language skills
at one of the most prestigious Universities
in Australia.
Anyone can study the GEAP, even if you
only have basic English skills. To ensure you
are enrolled in the appropriate level, you will
sit a short placement test before your rst
class. The test involves grammar, vocabulary
and writing.
You can study the GEAP as a stand-alone
program for personal or professional
advancement or to gain credit towards a
degree in your home University. GEAP can
also be used as a pathway to the University
of Adelaide if you have not met the minimum
English requirements for an Academic English
Pathway program (see previous page).
GEAP allows you to tailor your program
depending on your needs. Focus your
learning with a choice of Friday
specialisations including Global Business
English, Australian Culture and IELTS or

Academic Purposes (GEAP)

Duration: 20 contact hours per week. You can choose the
length of your program - from 5 to 45 weeks (enrolment must
be in 5 week blocks).
Start Dates: every 5 weeks throughout the year.
Entry Criteria: There are no specic entry requirements for
the GEAP program. Suitable for all levels.
Levels: 5 levels from elementary to advanced.
Class Times: 8.30am - 12.30pm, Monday - Friday
or 12.30pm - 4.30pm, Monday - Friday
Each student will have a combination of morning or afternoon
classes each week.
Fee: $395 per week in 2014.

TOEFL Test Centre
The Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) is now
available at the University of Adelaide. Tests are held regularly throughout the year at the
ELC in the city centre.

Homestay Accommodation
The English Language Centre runs a
successful Homestay accommodation
program, placing international students
with local families for a rst-hand experience
of everyday Australian family life.
Homestay is a wonderful way for
students to improve their English,
acquire condence, learn more about
Australian culture and meet new people
in a friendly environment.
New host families are interviewed
and their homes personally visited by
the Homestay Coordinator to assess
interest, friendliness and concern for
the student. Homestay can be arranged
for a placement fee of AUD$250 and
payment of AUD$240 per week.

ELC Social Club
Our social club organises affordable, fun
events and activities. Recent activities
have included a trip to Port Adelaide for
dolphin spotting, a visit to the historic
Adelaide Hills village of Hahndorf, movie
nights, ten pin bowling competitions,
nights out at local restaurants, beach
volleyball held in the city centre, quiz
nights and soccer matches.
