Need for Cooling Water Treatment

Though at times neglected, but a proper chemical treatment of a cooling water
system plays a key role in smooth and economical functioning of most of the
industries.
The major problems that may arise of a poor cooling water treatment are:

Rise in power consumption of heat exchanger due to scaling

Leakage of pipeline and heat exchanger tubes due to corrosion
Blockage of tubes and nozzles due to bio-fouling
Airborne/waterborne diseases due to legionella bacteria which is found in
cooling water

Objectives of Cooling Water Chemical Treatment

Chemical Treatment of cooling water is very essential to maintain the cooling tower
efficiency close to design. This can be assessed by calculating the CT effectiveness
over a period of time by checking the Range and Approach temperature. In addition
to above it is also vital to prevent undesired rusting of system metallurgy and
prevention of bio-fouling. The primary objectives of chemical treatment are as
follows:

To
To
To
To
To
To

prevent deposition of scales on heat-exchanger tubes and system pipelines

increase the life of system by inhibiting corrosion
avoid unprecedented shut down for de-scaling
eradicate disease causing bacteria such as Legionella Disease
keep cooling tower sump, fills and louvers clean and free of bio-fouling
maintain CT effectiveness and reduce power cost

Objectives of Blow down

Blow down is basically draining out the water from bottom of cooling tower sump.
Though this might be a look like a difficult practice for areas where water is scarce,
but it is essential for a proper cooling water treatment. Blow down requirements are
derived after calculating the system and water conditions. The main objectives
being:

To control the TDS, hardness salts, chloride and silica level in re-circulating water
in limit
To remove suspended foreign matters from the CT sump
To reduce turbidity of circulating water
