Subject: Letter of Recommendation for Saurav Tripathy
Dear Sir/Madam,
It is a great pleasure to write to you on behalf of Saurav Tripathy and recommend him for entry to your MSIROM:
Business Analytics program. I have known Saurav for over a year since his first job at Mu Sigma as a Business
Analyst right out of engineering school in Aug 2012. Mu Sigma is a pioneer in the Decision Sciences and
Analytics field and helps organizations institutionalize data driven decision making. Mu Sigma uses global
delivery to provide analytical services to its clients across the world and my role is to help facilitate Client Delivery;
in my role, I work with multiple clients across industries, understanding their business problems and help come up
with data driven analytical solutions along with my team.
I first got introduced to Saurav while he was working on a project for a large retailer. The problem was to help the
client with optimizing their store shelf space by creating a data mart to capture shelf space utilization across
multiple stores. In the first couple of days itself; Saurav was able to stand out from the other members of the team
based on his ability to comprehend the business problem and the objectives. His ability to seek clarity was very
commendable. Often times people are scared to ask questions to the clients but Saurav was able to provide
specific business context for the questions and even the client was impressed by this nature. Another quality of
Saurav was his ability to document the various potential scenarios (use cases) that we could face in trying to
execute the problem. This shows his ability to think beyond the obvious and be as exhaustive as possible in his
thought process.
Saurav has excellent grasping skills for Mathematics, Business and Technology. I have seen this in multiple
projects, first in the retail project, he quickly learnt the pieces of SQL and stored procedure scripting, In another
instance, I had tasked him with learning new statistical techniques and implement them in Hadoop/ R to solve a
problem for a pharmaceutical major. In both instances, Saurav was able to grasp the business context and then
learn and apply the statistics and technology methodologies to solve the business problem using first principles.
I also find Saurav to be very inquisitive, well read and hard working. Solving problems in the field of decision
sciences requires continuous learning; Problems are continuously evolving and candidates who can continuously
LEARN will have an edge over the others. Saurav has this quality. He also does not give up easily and I have
seen this first hand when he spent an entire night trying to figure out an optimal query solution. I think some of
these qualities of Saurav will play a crucial role in the business analytics space.
Saurav also has excellent command over English and even though he was just out of college, I had complete
confidence in him handling client communications; He was also diligent in providing notes, follow ups and was
generally finishing his deliverables before time and helping others with their tasks. For his age, I find him to be
quite mature and dependable.
In all aspects, I think Saurav will be an outstanding candidate to attend your analytics program and I believe that
he will continue to showcase the highest standards of learning in your organization. I highly recommend him for
this program and wish him the very best in his future aspirations to explore the Decision Sciences Space
Best Regards
