SNOWBOX CONSTRUCTION
1. Snow box sleds must be constructed using a cardboard box as the primary
framework for the vehicle.
2. Other acceptable materials include: duct tape, masking tape, shipping tape,
styrofoam, glue, liquid nails adhesive, paint, decals, paper, plastic bags or plastic
sheeting (maximum of 10 mil), plastic wrap and waxed paper. PERIOD.
3. PROHIBITED materials include (but may not be limited to): no metal of any
kind (no wire, no staples, no foil, no nails, no tacks), no heavy plastic (nothing
heavier than a 10 mil heavy duty plastic bag-type material), no plexiglas, no hard
plastics, no industrial pressed cardboard or particle board, no wood, nothing
inflatable, no glass, no string, no twine, no ropes, no wheels, no tires, no
manufactured sled parts, no ski parts, and no tube parts. Race officials reserve the
right to add other unsafe items to this list. Additionally- if the item in question
was originally designed to go in the snow – it is prohibited.
4. Sled bottoms can optionally be covered with a SAFE material other than
cardboard (paint, soft plastic (crumble-able), tape, wax, soap, or water repellant)
to improve speed and durability. Be sure to avoid all prohibited items listed
above.
5. Sleds must be constructed so that riders kneel, sit or lay feet first inside the sled.
No standing will be permitted for safety purposes.
6. All sides of the sled must be at least 6 inches above the snow surface and have a
front, back, bottom and two sides.
7. The maximum rider capacity is 10 riders per box sled.
8. Sleds of any size are permitted. However, keep in mind the size of the vehicle or
trailer you will need to transport your sled to the race site! Also keep in mind that
you will need to be able to pull the sled by hand up a steep hill (no vehicles on
sledding hill).
9. Race officials reserve the right to reject any sled box that does not pass the safety
inspection. Unsafe boxes will not be permitted to race.

RULES:
1. The race will be a timed event. Only one box will race at a time. Only one
official race per box.
2. All entries must be present and register before 2:00 on race day. Team names and
rider names must be recorded prior to going down the hill.
3. Riders must have helmets. Bicycle, skiing, or motorcycle helmets are acceptable.
4. One non-rider adult will be permitted to push and guide the sled off in the right
direction up to the running-start line.
5. A time deduction will be awarded to each sled varying based upon the number of
riders. The more riders, the greater the time deduction. Only riders that cross the
finish line inside the sled will be counted. Each finishing rider will credit the total
elapsed time by 0.2 seconds (a maximum of ten riders would deduct 2 seconds).
6. The race will be approximately 100 yards in total distance.
7. Team name (or den name/number and pack number) must be displayed in very
large print on the front AND rear of the box.
8. In the event of a sled crash, no re-runs will be permitted. All riders must get back
in the sled and continue to the finish line for the team score to qualify.
9. Though family and friends may enter, prizes will be awarded solely to Cub Scouts
at a pack level only.

TIPS
1. Cardboard boxes are not very durable! Water (snow) will quickly compromise
the strength of the box. The bottom of the box should be able to sit in the snow
for a prolonged period before the race without deterioration. It may be placed on
an object to keep it above the snow if necessary.
2. It is highly suggested that at least the front edge of the box be modified to
resemble the front side of a sled. Modifying all sides is a good idea because these
boxes do not always go straight. A box that has sharp corners and goes sideways
will slow down and probably stop, flip over or crash.
3. Runners or “skis” constructed of cardboard or Styrofoam may assist the sled box
to achieve a higher speed. However, poor construction will increase failure rates!
4. THINK BIG!!! Big boxes are discarded daily at hardware, appliance and
furniture stores. Ask an employee to save a clean and sturdy one for your team.
5. THINK COLORFUL AND CREATIVE. Decorate your entry! Make it bold and
original. Think outside the box… ouch that was bad.
6. Have fun with this. It’s going to be a great time.
