CHAPTER 1

1 Introduction

Clash Manager is used to group clashes together and allocate them to owning disciplines for investigation.
Clashes can then be approved or reallocated to other disciplines with comments, for example a hole in a
floor plate may be required so the Pipe to Floor Clash is reallocated from the Piping Department to the
Structural Department.

Clash Manager is not intended to replace good design practice using Plant Design (PDMS) it is intended to
enhance clash management.

1.1 Aim

The following points need to be understood by the trainees

Understand how Clash manager can be used to manage interference checking in Plant Design
(PDMS).

1.2 Objectives

At the end of this training, you will have a
Broad view of Clash Management

1.3 Prerequisites

There must also be a copy of SQL or ORACLE available for creating a Clash Manager ORACLE or
SQL instance.
The User should have knowledge of PDMS

1.4 Course Structure

Training will consist of oral and visual presentations, demonstrations and set exercises. Each workstation
will have a training project, populated with model objects. This will be used by the trainees to practice their
methods, and complete the set exercises.

1.5 Using this guide

Certain text styles are used to indicate special situations throughout this document, here is a summary;

2.1 Access to Clash Manager

Access to Clash Manager will be done from Aveva Plant Design (PDMS) so we first need to enter Aveva
Plant Design (PDMS) in the project SAM.

Starting PDMS

CHAPTER 3
3 Creating Clash Sets

Clash Sets are groups of Plant Design (PDMS) items that are to be clash checked against other Plant
Design (PDMS) items.

Clash sets are used to organise the Plant Design (PDMS) items being checked into manageable sizes.

Clash sets are based on discipline and area.

It is assumed that you are familiar with normal clashing in Plant Design (PDMS).

In Clash Set you define your Obstruction List, Exclusion List, Check List, Tolerance etc

To create a Clash Set Select Tools > Clash Sets form the Clash Manager Main Menu.

Remember to be able to create a Clash Set you must be a ticked Administrator in Clash Manager
Configuration > Security > Users

Initially there will be no clash sets. We will create a Clash Set that will allow us to check pipes in the
TRAINPIPE zone against all items in zones TRAINPIPE and TRAINSTR under site TRAINSITE.

3.4 Setting the exclusion List

The Exclusion List is list of AVEVA Plant Design (PDMS) items that will not be included in the Obstruction
List. For this we are going to exclude a Equipment by using wild cards.

3.4.1 Adding Items - Wildcards

Regular Expression Summary
Value Meaning
^ Matches the start of a line
$ Matches the end of a line
. Matches any character
* Matches zero or more occurrences of the previous expression
[string] Matches any one of the characters listed in string

In addition to the standard Regular Expression syntax there is a simple NOT operator <!>. If the exclamation
mark is the first character of the Regular Expression, the rule evaluates TRUE if the expression fails.
If wildcards were entered at the 'Add to Check List' dialog box as necessary, check the wildcard expansion.

Examples of Regular Expression Syntax
Example
Expression
Matches Result of Example Expression
^[AB]305$ A string beginning with A or B
and ending with 305
A305 or B305
[AB]305 A string containing A or B
followed by 305
IBMA305HAL or PQRB305LMN
!TEMP45 Any string that does NOT contain

/THIS/string/Matches
^/S45/.*/TEMP45$ A string beginning /S45 and
ending with TEMP45
/S45/ABCanythinggoeshere345/TEMP

radio group
Used to select either 'A Check' or 'B Check' for this run. The default is
set in the data associated with the Clash Set. 'A Check' does a full
primitive by primitive check of every component within a branch. This
option is not normally recommended. 'B Check' is a simplified check
which ignores clashes between certain pairs of components within the
branches. This option is normally used.

MAP Override
checkbox
If checked, causes desclash to ignore errors in the Spatial Map, which
would otherwise abort the desclash run. The default is given in the
Clash Set data.

5 Interpreting the Clash Report
Once a Clash set has been run a Clash report will be generated, this section discusses the clash run and
describes how you display any clashes found.

5.1 Clash Report

Reports on clashes are presented in a separate window that includes a main menu with dropdown menus, a
toolbar and a status bar. A popup menu is available for both reports.
There are two types of report, namely, Clash Groups and Clash Detail. Both reports are in tabular format.
The reports appear in separate panes, and either or both can be displayed. The pane that is 'Active' has a
dark blue title bar; the 'Inactive' pane has a grey title bar. Scroll bars are available for access to data that
overspills the panes. Details of the current filter can be displayed in a separate pane, titled Filter, at the
bottom of the window.

5.1.1 Clash Groups Report

Each row of this report is dedicated to a clash group. The data in the columns is identified by the column
headings. The width of a column can be set by double-clicking on the column heading. The width then
toggles between that of the heading and that of the widest data item in the column

The left-hand column shows the status of the group, as follows:
GREEN tick Approved
RED cross Unapproved
BLUE question mark Pending
GREEN tick superimposed on
BLUE question mark
Conditionally Approved.
Fields in the report are colour-highlighted as follows:
YELLOW Indicates the owner discipline, and if appropriate, highlights
the element which belongs to the discipline
RED UNALLOCATED discipline
CYAN Change highlighting.

5.1.2 Clash Detail Report

Each row of this report is dedicated to an individual clash within the group(s) selected in the Clash Groups
report. The structure of the report, column one indications and field colour-coding are as described for the
Clash Groups report.

5.1.3 Filter Pane

This pane displays the filter criteria and values currently set to limit the data shown on clash reports. The
information appears in a two-column table showing criteria in the left-hand column and values in the right-
hand column.

CHAPTER 7

6 Clash Allocation and Approval

It is not always possible to clear all the clashes in Plant Design (PDMS) sometimes it will be necessary to
accept or approve a clash. Clash Manager gives you that ability. Once a clash has been approved it can be
ignored in future clash runs. Following investigation it may be more appropriate to change the ownership of
a clash to another discipline for fixing or clash approval.

6.1 Automatic Approval of Clashes

In the Clash report displayed, there are five clash groups, out of which one is automatically approved.

Rules can be set to automatically approve a clash by a administrator or Clash Coordinator.
Select Tools >Settings >Clash Manager Configuration and then select Accept tab
Details of setting up of rules is explained in Clash Manager Administration course
