Answer All Questions:
Question1
(a) Explain with the aid of equations, curves and states the drawbacks of the armature resistance
control of a dc motors.
(b) Draw the circuit of buck converter and explain its operation in dc motor control.

(c) The speed of series dc motor is controlled by a single-phase full bridge diode rectfier and
boost converter. The diode rectfier is operated from a 380 V, 60 Hz single-phase supply.

boost converter.

Question 2
(a) Draw and explain the speed torque curves of series and separately excited dc motors in
speeds lower and higher than rated speed.

(b) The speed of 20 hp, 300V, 900 rpm separately excited dc motor is controlled by a three
phase full wave controlled converter. The field circuit is controlled by a three-phase half wave
controlled converter. The ac input to the armature and field converters is three-phase, Y-
connected, 208V, 60 Hz. The armature resistance is = 15 . 0

II. If the field circuit converter is set to the maximum field current, the armature current is
48 A, and the delay angle of the armature converter is zero, determine the motor speed.
III. For the same armature current of part (II), determine the firing angle of the field circuit
converter if the speed has to be increased to 1800 rpm.

Question 3
(a) Draw the three-phase PWM converter circuit and explain the operation of this converter
in controlling three-phase induction motor. Also, explain and draw the circuit of the
unipolar and bipolar PWM.

(a) In a constant flux control of 3-phase induction motor, prove that the maximum torque is
constant for any operating frequency in 1 < a range.
The equivalent circuit at any frequency at constant flux control is shown in the following
figure:

(b) Three phase 4-pole 380V 50Hz, Y-connected induction motor is connected to (380V 60 Hz
supply) via three-phase full wave uncontrolled rectifier, boost converter and 3-phase PWM
