3 - 4 April 2013 ADB Headquarters, Manila, Philippines
Introduction Access to affordable, clean, and reliable energy services is critical for sustainable development. In underserved and remote communities, including mountains and islands, where grid extension is difficult and the conventional fuel supply chain is easily broken, renewable energy (RE) is emerging as the most secure and economical energy supply solution for the 21 st
century. As the share of RE power in the grid mix increases, the intermittent nature of most RE-based electricity must be managed appropriately to ensure continuous availability and stability of the power network. Successful strategies to manage this variability encompass a range of measures such as a balanced generation portfolio, geographical dispersion of supply, better forecasting tools, demand side management, and appropriate storage solutions. Storage and smart grid systems will become increasingly important as the share of intermittent RE increases in the grid mix beyond 10- 20%. This will soon become a critical issue for most countries which intend to increase energy access for the poor and more so for those targeting to use greater shares of RE. Globally, most grid-connected electricity storage systems are pumped hydropower installations with typical capacities of several hundred megawatts (MW). New storage solutions are emerging, including affordable long-lasting batteries and related technologies which are scalable to the household and community level, and which may eventually be feasible for large-scale applications. This technology field is developing rapidly, with production costs decreasing and energy densities increasing. Energy for All
ADB is committed to helping its developing member countries ensure that all of their people have access to clean, modern energy. ADBs Energy Policy 2009, aligned with Strategy 2020, recognizes the essential role of energy for reducing poverty and achieving inclusive growth. Maximizing access to energy for all is one of three pillars for policy implementation, along with promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy, and promoting energy sector reform, capacity building, and governance. In 2008 ADB launched the Energy for All Program to increase its investment in the energy access sector. The Energy for All Partnership was formed in 2009 to extend ADBs support to like-minded organizations and form a coalition that shares the objective of providing modern energy access to 100 million people by 2015. Energy for All Program is being supported by various partners including the Governments of Japan, Austria, Australia, Norway as well as Denmark and Switzerland. Energy for All are working closely with the United Nations Sustainable Energy for All Initiative and the Government of Norway-led Energy+ Partnership to jointly achieve the ambition of Universal Energy Access by 2030. You can find more information on website: http://www.energyforall.info/ http://www.adb.org/sectors/energy/programs/energy-for- all-initiative ADB is organizing the workshop on Energy Storage Technologies and Applications as a forum for industry, academia, government agencies, and development partners to discuss the state of the art and current challenges in battery storage technologies, to enhance the partnership among participating institutions, and to identify future collaboration opportunities for further development and dissemination. Defining these activities and their objectives will be a key output from this workshop.
Objective The main objectives of the Workshop are to discuss emerging energy storage technologies and applications; share our experiences, accomplishments, and common concerns; support each other; and refresh our vision of the future. The workshop will cover key topics such as Materials, Battery Management Systems (BMS), Recycling, Electric Vehicles (EVs), and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The specific objectives are:
o To discuss current status of energy storage technologies, especially Lithium ion, deep cycle, and lead acid batteries, and state-of-the-art battery materials and chemistries; o To identify general and technology specific factors that prevent promotion, development and financing of energy storage projects, and to devise strategies to overcome barriers and propose technical and commercial options; o To work directly with project developers, manufacturers, and end-users to assist them in implanting energy storage projects; and o To update stakeholders on the latest developments and issues related to the Materials, BMS, Recycling, EVs, and ICT.
There is limited space for manufacturers to display their products on first come first served basis.
